The starting line up was never ever going to work.
Having a centre forward, even one as limited as Lloyd would make a difference. Starting Dembele through the middle and with keeping Anderson helping Paal. Doomed to fail. I think today also showed Morrison must start also. And Yang too, given current availabilities.
Another infuriating game when the plan is in place when we are out of the game.
Yes we have bad injuries, but we still could be competitive, it's only Stoke, but we were set up to lose the game.
I'd like to just rip up Madsens contract now, we both go our separate ways, if he'd be agreeable. I actually worry for him a bit, I've never seen a footballer who looks so lacklustre and miserable. But presumably we can't even do that, as at the moment we're discounting his transfer fee over the whole length of his 5 year contract, and if we released him now the whole fee would appear in one years accounts? I suppose the best we can do is send him out on loan somewhere, God willing.

I’d have played Morrison in defence and move Edwards to midfield as he did well there against Leeds. I’d have moved Smyth over to the left and brought Min-Hyeok in on the right. Would’ve started Lloyd up front.
Morrison is clearly on a ‘loading’ (ugh) schedule as he hasn’t played more than 45 minutes since coming back from injury. Same for Lloyd who was just back.
It doesn’t excuse a disinterested Marbella performance, but clearly Cifuentes didn’t go with Fox at the back and Dembele up top out of choice.

Lloyd clearly isn't fully fit and Morrison's return looks very much like it's being managed by the fitness team. Min-Hyeok was poor in previous games so I can see why he didn't start.
It all looks a bit like shuffling the deckchairs with such a mediocre squad, loads of injuries, and the person in charge of fitness literally phoning it in.

Not quite sure why this thread has turned on Madsen for yesterday’s debacle . I get he is symbolic of the sketchy recruitment over the passed …….oh god knows how long actually, but he wasn’t any worse than anybody else really. And he only played half of the game.
In the cold light of day , yesterday was a shambles and Marti must take his share of responsibility. But, a lot of what we saw yesterday was dictated by the sports science team and the more I think about it , the more I think these people are stealing a living to justify their existence in such numbers at our (any) club. It used to be that the physios would try and persuade you that you were fit to play . Now it seems they try and persuade the player and the coaching staff they are NOT fit to play . This gives the players huge excuses to spend long periods of time on the sidelines, when really they could get out there and deal with a little discomfort or pain for 90 mins. This won’t always be the case . Cook was clearly playing with an injury . But our clubs’ cloak of relative invisibility regarding injuries ( see Varane recently..anyone really know why he was missing?) gives players another curtain to hide behind on info fed to them from sports science malingerers.
A cynical view this morning admittedly , but sometimes fed up with how our club and football in general is going .

Me too, but I suspect it wouldn’t be possible or practical.
With these stats in the real world, a simple performance review followed by a performance improvement plan would eventually lead to him leaving or meeting Mr Peter and his Mid40s but football is exempt - despite the fact he was seemingly acquired based on his data and stats. And now, his QPR stats would probably mean no one is going to willlngly take him off our hands unless we loan him and probably pay most of his salary regardless.
I found myself tracking (some form of recently developed QPR related PTSD/OCD) Madsen for a while during the game and only watching his movement and actions. It’s as if he actively seeks out positions that do not involve him in the game - at all.
His most active contribution was telling (well, mostly just pointing to) someone else to fill in behind him (diagonally) whilst he sat between the lines to take up an empty space until the ball bypassed him completely.
Maybe he thinks that between the lines is the place to be but the number of touches he makes would prove otherwise.
Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

My fault for the deviation, Mart - apologies.
It was in response to Clive’s question - do you trust the people who bought Madsen based on data to replace Marti, hence why it’s here.
Should probably be a different thread.

Is anyone saying Marti should be replaced? Yesterday was terrible. That’s mainly down to Marti in my view. If you have that opinion it doesn’t mean you also want him replaced.

From the recruitment operation that spent £3m+ and a 5 year contract on Nicholas Madsen comes… a glorious new manager.
The club might try to boost their green credentials by recycling an old one. It's happened before .

There are several related issues in what it feels has become a vicious circle, all highlighted against Stoke.
The selection, tactics and subs were questionable at best yesterday. The performance was appalling. Issues relating to Marti’s future keep on coming. Injuries/illnesses and lack of bench depth/quality compound all of the above.
All of this just two weeks after we got a result against Leeds with a decent all round performance.
Marti says he was to blame and would have changed the whole team if he could have done but he replaced Andersen with Madsen, which is worse than going down to ten men because you would at least adjust your shape. He’s usually keen to take yellow carded players off to avoid this issue.
There were alternatives who could have run around and tackled at least (on the bench) but not used. Bennie for example.
We could also have changed formation and moved players around to chase the game - nothing until it was too late.
Either it’s someone who’s run out of ideas and logic or it’s someone sending a message because they want out. Either way it seems Marti’s time left is limited and it feels like Stoke to Stoke games are the defining moments of this season for him.
Back to the question Clive posed earlier - assuming there will be a change, do you trust the people who bought Madsen to find a replacement for Marti and if you do, what do you expect to happen when the new guy starts and more unproven, untested players arrive ?
Classic Mick McCarthy quote follows:
Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Yes I think there are a couple of things Marti could have tried.
I think we will be ok this season, grabbing a few more points combined with three teams below us being worse.
When the dust settles on this season and most, if not all, of the out of contract players have walked away what we are left with is embarrasing.
I think next season will be the season that years of mismanagement finally catches up with us.

I wish I were as confident as you. I'm now very worried that it's going to be *this* season.

We can’t blame Marti for this but we can’t say that he’s blameless either. This is not the same squad of 3 years ago. There no Roberts, Laird as an example. I don’t believe this squad is very good but I don’t think that Dunne, Smyth, Fox, Colback, Varane, Morgan, Anderson are just throwing the towel in are not trying.
They did yesterday. All of them.
Scooters, Tunes, Trainers and QPR.

Oh absolutely no need to apologise mate, especially to me.
Been one of Madsen’s biggest critics probably . Agreed totally with the post , not sure if it was yourself or someone else , who said that when you watch him , he seems to deliberately find places on the pitch where he can’t receive the ball . I’ve seen him do exactly that.
Just thought that yesterday’s nonsense went a lot further than Madsen. So much wrong by the time he came on that I’m not sure what he was supposed to do change the flow of the match .
I actually would love him to turn his QPR career around , I really would. I’m not even sure it’s his fault. I just think he’s not suited to this division and this style of football.
Which then takes us full circle back to Clive’s snd your point I guess .

Everyone is guessing that Morrison’s minutes are being ‘managed’: I think Cifuentes prefers Fox and Edwards. If Morrison needed taking off at HT or early in 2nd half then so be it and at least he is building match fitness which he isn’t doing by sitting on the bench every week. Could’ve done with Edward’s presence in midfield yesterday.
It was also his choice to play Andersen on the left yesterday which was never going to work. Smyth has played there before and would’ve provided the extra support for Paal. Either Dembele or Min-Hyeok in on the right.
Lloyd HAD to be a better option to start up front: at least he’s played there before. If he tires early then replace but think we missed a trick by not having a young forward like Emmerson Sutton on the bench instead of Harry Murphy (another attacking midfielder)

At this stage of the season you want to keep youngsters as far away as possible from this team. They are not ready for 1st team football.
I do think it is funny reading comments on here that some are shocked by the performance or the manner of the defeat and getting angry. These type of performances have become the norm over the past four years. MC has worked a miracle doing what he has done so far with these players, remove half a dozen OKish players and they haven't got a hope.
I still think MC is the right manager, but when we have comments saying Alfie Lloyd should start, then my God he deserves a fcking medal if we stay up. We've been dog shyte all season. And that mid season winning run was only because we had two in midfield who could tackle and run, take them out and we are more spongy and even softer.
He'll walk into another job in the summer, and I can only wish him well.

Please don't even think that. Shudder.

I think we underestimate the importance of Cook and Field to this team, anyone know the stats of n points with/without the 2 of them? And when the 2 of them play together?
May be wrong but think it would be telling.

Nardi - Seems to have escaped criticism but has had a really poor couple of months in my view, decision making with and without the ball was terrible yesterday.
Paal - Another one of his phone it in performances especially first half
Fox - Absolutely terrible at the back, the manager has put a lot of faith in him and he has done well at times but was rank yesterday, showed zero infield leadership
Edwards - One of the only players who could pick his head up high, was better than Varane in the holding position 2nd half
Dunne - Poor and leggy at least tries, but whoever was in front of him did not help
Varane - At his worst especially off the ball
Colback - Seems to have got a free pass in the ratings, his first half performance and effort was a disgrace, failed to track back on numerous occasions including goals
Morgan - Form and belief has fallen of a cliff
Anderson - I get why he was picked as I thought he did ok at Leeds, but legs have gone, no idea why he played on the left when Smyth could have done it. Was shredded and gave Paal no protection
Smyth - Gave us nothing other than the long throws, another who seemed leggy after the break
Dembele - Maybe he will shine in a better team and fully fit, I worry he is a playground footballer, a player without a position, the one time he got through the shot was pathetic
Lloyd - Made a huge difference at least gave energy and some threat. Should have played the first 45 minutes not the 2nd
Madsen - Started better and then reverted to type. He has the demenour of someone who to put it politely is really struggling with mental health issues.
Yang - Had a real impact great goal
Marti - Rightly angry, his leaders did not lead, his creators did not create. He has to look at himself and ask whether he needs to be more pragmatic, but oh what an appalling hand he has been dealt at the moment:
4 Unfit strikers Both left wingers out Signings unsuitable for the division Colback and Anderson legs have gone Nardi, Smyth, Varane, Morgan, Dembele the only starters who are contracted to be here next year and have skin in the game.
