Absolutely devastating. I’ve not known a player in my lifetime who the term ‘legend’ is more fitting for, but this man truly is legendary. His family should be so proud of all he’s achieved in life (and will likely continue to achieve in death). 15th-minute applause today.

RIP Joey T.

Absolutely heartbroken to hear about Joe Thompson’s passing. A true Rochdale legend, an inspiration on and off the pitch, and the definition of a fighter. To battle cancer three times with such courage is nothing short of heroic. Rest in peace, Joe—you’ll never be forgotten. Thoughts with his family, friends, and everyone at the club.

The start of his career with Dale saw threads generated on his role and value to the team. It's fair to say that since those early days, no other player had generated so much admiration on and off the field

RIP Joey T

36 years old and a husband with two young kids. Cancer you b*st*rd. Wicked, wicked disease.

Joe will always be remembered for his Charlton goal and the euphoria that enabled Oldham to be relegated at the same time. A story that defies belief. His fight against his illness was one of sheer determination and showed a courage that defined him.

My thoughts go out to all his former team mates, and everyone who helped him in his fight to survive, but more importantly to his wife and young family. I hope they can find the strength to come to terms with what has happened, and that they know just how much Joe was loved and respected by those people who came across him in their respective lives.

Rest in Peace, Joe. Thanks for the memories.

P.S. In the circumstances, I would hope that the club will open a book of condolence for supporters to sign in his memory.

Awful news. Not only a club and town legend but became so widely admired across the whole football community and beyond because of the man he was, as shown by the volume of tributes and posts on social media this morning. RIP Joe.
