The Swansea Match Thread. 15:12 - Apr 20 with 18660 views | Boston | They're on a four game winning streak, God knows why as they have nothing to play for, as are we after the Preston win. So, is it to be a dour listless performance from both squads, or will the relief of mid table mediocrity bring a flowing relaxed holiday atmosphere to them? I'll go for an entertaining 2-1 to the Rangers.

Have a day off. We all want to see us win and get to as many points as we can, it's a poor performance in a dead rubber match. I'd be miles more pissed off if it was a game we still needed something from.

Good for you - I'll say what I think. And, once again, why pick on me when many others here have complained far more vociferously? If you don't like it, have a day off yourself!

The Swansea Match Thread. on 19:18 - Apr 21 with 1415 views | baz_qpr | Got to give Swansea credit, the divisions form team outside of Burnley and it showed. Our lack of pace and set up played into their hands along with the late change which left us defending far too deep and unable to playout. Fox had an absolute stinker and Edwards struggled in Midfield. Even with the same starting eleven I think Madsen central, Yang up top and Kolli and Anderson wide might have worked better. Clearly Frey only had 45 mins in him. Probably a mistake to start Anderson but I suspect Marti does not trust us defensively with Dembele and Madsen on at the same time.

The Swansea Match Thread. on 18:17 - Apr 21 by mart_Goblin | The manor of the defeat was the most frustrating thing today . For an hour it was really men against boys . I thought we were disjointed, weak and bullied for a large part of the game . Caveats for a lot of things like injuries, injuries in the warm up, people out of position, players not fully match fit etc etc but when you get bullied and beaten for desire and guts and the will to win then I think we are entitled to be unhappy . Why no subs at half time ? It had to be changed so I was very surprised by that . If Frey can come on at 51 then he can come on at 45. The 2 subs we made , made us even more disjointed for a couple of minutes and it’s 2-0. Too many poor performances. When Fox is bad he’s very very bad . He wasn’t the only one though . It’s dead rubber , so I won’t lose any sleep but I hate seeing us so second best . It made no difference to the result as we were guff and got what we deserved , but how poor was that referee? F*ck my old boots . He was bloody awful . |
I think it's harsh to say we weren't up for it physically. This ref seened to only have blue and white hooped cards. They were clearly setting up to dive and con the ref - particularly Key and O'Brien who kept crumpling to the floor or screaming whenever there was a tackle or the slightest bit of contact, winning free kicks. Whereas Ashby gets a high, late tackle against him and no yellow card. and it seemed fair game to shove Kolli in the air or Yang on the run. We couldn't be physical because of the useless officials. We had 19 fouls given against us! Absurd and killed the game. I don't think there was more than ten minutes of the ball in play after we scored. Also that ridiculous decision to blow up in the first half for a foul on Andersen when he was running into the pen and was past their defenders was woeful refereeing. Sometimes refs have to punish persistent/cynical fouls early on to set a standard. Swansea were literally laughing when they conned him again. We did get sucked into too much head tennis though. We looked so much better when we got it on the floor. [Post edited 21 Apr 21:22]

On current showing I’d fancy Swansea to be in with a shout of the top 6 next season. They’re exactly what you need in this league; a well drilled, physical, hardworking, horrible team, in the ref’s face and love the dark arts. Oh and they can play a bit into the bargain.

Yeah, I thought Swansea were pretty slick. But it's early days in their new manager's reign. Let's see what happens when they have a dip in form.
The Swansea Match Thread. on 19:53 - Apr 21 with 1230 views | Watford_Ranger | Did we have a meaningful shot on target other than the goal? A nice goal it was too. Plenty of time after we scored for the onslaught that never came. Dreadfully weak, slow, meh starting XI just carrying Andersen, Madsen and Yang so it’s no surprise we were largely outplayed. Think the one time in the first half we got in behind the referee was far too excited to blow his whistle for the 378th time that he couldn’t wait a millisecond to play advantage. Absolute whopper all day with the obligatory 92nd minute yellow for time wasting to please the assessor. I don’t blame footballers for taking the piss- win at all costs- but the state of refereeing in this league bar a select few is dire. A weak man hidden away in a dead rubber. Still, well down the list of reasons we got beat.

Agree with a lot of that but ‘physical’ doesn’t only mean being strong in the tackle or challenge. The ref was awful as I said , but it also applies to how our players get around the pitch , block passing lanes , press as a unit and for the love of god, pick up second balls . We lost almost every second ball or knockdown . I can’t remember one . Every knockdown or header fell to Swansea players . That’s not luck, that’s organisation, game smart and getting yourself in positions that that can happen . We did none of those things . We lost so many aerial challenges, Including Jimmy by a much shorter winger and even when we did it fell to a black shirt. Swansea impressed me in their play and organisation (not the second half shytehousery and b*llocks) And for most of the game we got no where near them . The Andersen moment in the first half made me blew my top by the way. What a joke of a referee. [Post edited 21 Apr 20:00]

Yeah I agree we weren't picking up the second ball. And pressing more cohesively. We misssed Field and Varane. But getting sucked into head tennis didn't help us. Yang, Kolli and Andersen aren't going to win too many headers. As others have said we missed Saito and Smyth providing an out ball.

Yep . Saito and Smyth provide energy and pace amongst other things . We was as slow as rust out there today
The Swansea Match Thread. on 21:08 - Apr 21 with 967 views | joe90 | We were beaten by a better team today, but I don’t think our performance was totally abject. I hate to blame the ref, but he did contribute to breaking up the play which then played into Swansea’s hands once they realised they could utilise the ‘dark arts’. That aside, we were toothless in the final third despite some good build up play. The game had a good pace to it and I thought we did show some desire to win, which in the end wasn’t enough. We all know our failings, so no point going over them again. I know some are disappointed with Marti’s team selection, but at this point it doesn’t really hurt to mix it up a little. Nice to see Sutton get some minuets. [Post edited 21 Apr 21:26]

Sorry, just to check, are we still at the "this is all completely trivial" and "read a newspaper" stage of things we were at this morning? Or should Marco Pierre White be the manager again now?

I wouldn’t put money on it. Having put Fox at CB and Kolli as lone CF in the 3-0 abomination at Swansea on Boxing Day and watched the pair of them taken to the cleaners, Marti had the grand idea to do the same again. Beggars belief really.

You make great points. What I would say is that Marti has to play Kolli as Saito is out so, Yang switches to LW and as Smyth is out, Dembele back in on the RW. Then Field is out and Varane in the warm-up, it seems so, forced to play Edwards in the middle as Madsen won't run back. This means Fox comes back in. What we learned is against a proper team like Swansea (not the drek of Derby, Oxford, Cardiff or PNE), Fox will struggle. Ashby is not a LB as we knew and Edwards cannot play in the middle against proper midfielders. They ran rings around Edwards and Colback but to be fair to those two in the middle, Yang was drek on the LW again, Andersen was poor (he's a super sub now), Madsen was hiding on the LW a lot while supposedly rotating with Yang (not really) and Dembele was not getting the ball high enough up the pitch. Kolli is not a target man to hold it up against proper defenders. We confirmed that Andersen and Madsen cannot play together. Marti gave em another chance and they blew it. Fox is not up to it at CB against a real team, and Yang is a striker at best. Madsen as we know, has the skill and did some running, but still not enough. And when Chair came on, you saw Swansea pull back, they knew what they were up against with Chair and brought Allen on to close it out. Paal is not match fit either, as we saw as soon as he came on, getting beaten easily for a fresh sub. For the next game, I would play Kolli in for Yang and bring Frey back in, now that he has had a few substitute appearances. I would also put Edwards back in defence where he belongs for Fox and bring in Morgan in the middle, as it seems all the others are out. If Frey is not ready, then play Yang upfront. With Sutton on the wing. What's the point in playing Yang when Sutton is around to test out?
