Wonderful to see, and that young lad has a future too!

I had a friend visiting Rochdale over the bank holiday weekend, never been before but she was amazed at the town hall, town centre, the Co-op museum, the great scenery surrounding us

I'm sick to death of people running the town down - almost like a knee-jerk. We're better than that, miles better

The Ogdens are living proof of what can be achieved if people look up from the floor. We can all see the poor districts and the problems associated with them - some of us live there, or have done in the past. But to only see that is down to ourselves. I now see Rochdale AFC as one of the most ambitious football clubs in the country and as the video shows, it's not just about football

I'm glad your friend enjoyed their visit. Yes the town has an interesting history, but thats what it is, history. What is there that has been built since WW2 that is of interest? What world-beating companies are there? A theatre? Nope, Fine dining? Not really. Modern art gallery? 90% of the art is in storage alongside the towns massive Egyptian treasures collection, and John Bright's desk...
Compare what Lytham has for its annual music festival to Rochdale's effort..we have decent parks but where are the concerts? Perhaps your friend enjoyed our extensive collection of pot holes and road works? The patchwork footpaths? Is there anything in this once proseperous town that could be classed as best in the country?
There does need to be a massive shift in local political will and effort sadly it is dominated by small minded thinking and low-level aspirations.
I sincerely hope that the Ogdens, the football club and Dale F@utures and other initiatives can make a substantial impact on the town, Lord knows we need it......

The Ogden’s are definitely a class act. How lucky we are right now.

Our arts centre (Touchstones) is currently undergoing a complete refit, enabling it to not only become the centre for what's now becoming an artistic hub* but to also hold other types of live events

*There are several locally-led galleries such as Ebor Studios in Littleborough and Richard St Studios alongside the old Fire Station, the latter having been repurposed not just as a museum but again, a place for businesses or individuals to utilise, for IT start-ups etc. In fact, that whole section of town from the station is being revamped and re-energised

There's lots more i could add... not least that Rochdale is this year's Gtr Manchester town of culture on the back of the above

https://www.rochdale.gov.uk/town-culture

But my point is this. It's dead easy to be negative. All places have potholes, just as all places have negative people. It takes a bit more than that to push things forward. The Ogdens are doing it, so instead of pointing up how things are different from the past, we can all look forwards

Maybe not fine dining but…

The flying horse does a cracking meat and potato pie with Red Cabbage..

The flyer also has the best selection of real ale I have seen in any pub* in quite some time.

*Nationally.

Edit.. superb video - proud to be from the Town. Would not change it for anything.

When I left Rochdale almost 40 years ago now, there was no future in this town if you wanted to get on in life. The pervading attitude was you can't do that, you're to young to be a site manager etc. got to serve your time etc. So I moved down to Essex where to attitude was if you're good enough, you're old enough and it was totally refreshing.
When I used to come back for the game f*** me Rochdale was depressing. Now however I view Rochdale much more positively. The town centre is amazing, I can't think of another town in Greater Manchester that could compare with our architecture. The infrastructure has been put in place with the Metrolink and as it has been said Drake Street is slowly on the up. What we need is an upturn in the economy, the site at the top of Drake Street/ Oldham Road is ready to go. I had hoped that Labour would have put money up for capital projects to get this sort of thing going, that's been a disappointment.
After all these years away, I am now seriously considering moving back to the town once more. With people like the Ogden's this town, this team has a bright future.

That's a cracking long winded negative diatribe which can be blown apart easily.

Not many towns in England have world beating companies although we've had our share in the past.

The newest theatre was opened in 1978 by arguably our most famous export after whom it was named.

I can think of five food pubs in the Borough which provide fine dining if you're happier spending under £30. If you want a Michelin Star and two mouthfuls for £50 sod off to London!

Compare us to a comparable town. You picked Lytham to support your point. I'll pick Scunthorpe. Play your music now!

I agree there's an issue with small mindedness and a lack of aspiration, but if anyone who had innovative ideas for Rochdale read your nonsense, they'd understandably have second thoughts. We remain as ever, a town built on its people. Superfluous things like paintings, an Egyptian pot, or John Bright's ink well are just bollocks.

EDIT: Just to add that video is the most professional, inspiring thing I've ever seen the club put out beating the Darlington play-off tickets comfortably.

Got to applaud the Ogdens for the video not only does it highlight Dale but it also promotes the people and the town..
We moved away some 30yrs ago for family reasons nd sadly the town did go down hill but money has been found and the green shoots are starting to show...

What is required now is for companies to start coming back and reopening the wheatsheaf centre to do so with a make over.
Videos of a positive nature like the one we have just watched.....

I'm sorry.. have I touched a nerve? Bad day at the office? Bank holiday hangover? You seems to enjoy jumping onto my posts, is it some sort of imagined power thing? I would have replied earlier but it was tea time ...

You probably won't remember the Rochdale Sculptors? Or the edgy Art exhibitions of the 70's and early 80's, or the Walter Kershaw murals in the early 70's? And why are there no Rochdale-born Glynn Boyd Harte works? He was a contemporaŕy of SPO at RGSB..?

Rochdale was thriving, innovative, busy and bustling. 50 years and half a lifetime later, its frightened of its own shadow, frightened to offend, frightened of real innovation.... "The last two shopping centres didnt work, lets build another one"
..Famous for what was, and now a National by-word for being somewhere no one wants to move to, especially businesses needing a workforce other than for warehouses close to the M62 on the way to somewhere else...its all gone so well...

Life under the Greater Manchester umbrella has stifled towns like Rochdale, the CEO at the opening of the Toad Lane Pioneers Museum extention said to me that "the best thing for Rochdale wa5s for it to become a dormitory town for Greater Manchester" such was his ambition and hence the millions spent on trams going the long way to Manchester...
Those of us who remember the buzz of the 60s and 70s are grateful we were there to experience it, the Rochdale of today is an homogenised, pale imitation. You probably like it .. some of us are not too keen on bland. Still, they did a good job with the Town Hall, a monument to the past, its just a shame there will be nothing from 2025 needing the same treatment in 2125....

I remember Rochdale in March 2024 when the professional football club had run out of money.

Some fans had got off their backsides and contacted Sir Peter Ogden.

Survival, stability, sustainability is what was asked of the family.

Look at us now.

And do we still have Wilfrid and Arthur Lord?

Not just my nerve that’s been touched though, is it?

That response includes things you liked, what you think and, with the comment about “bland”, presumed how others may think.

Sometimes it’s best to listen rather than talk. Appreciate and acknowledge other opinions may be more positive than our own, even when we don’t agree.

Sometimes those who talk about problems aren’t as productive as those who want to find solutions.

I think people use to call it 'character building'. Back to the video I thought it was excellent, professionally made and certainly inspiring. When selling the club/town to new players it could be an excellent tool.
