It is pretty mad. I don't think they did it when Keegan left or when Rush signed for Juventus, so it's definitely a modern phenomenon. Obviously Gerrard got appalling treatment when he was set to join Chelsea too.

I remember early on Paul Furlong being shouted at by our fans saying he wasn't fit to wear the shirt. He rode that out, particularly in the play off semi final, where he scored 'that goal' and went on to become a fans favourite.
Football careers are short and Trent Arnold has given everything to the club and the community physically and financially, so it seems very dim for some fans to boo him. | |

Quite, and you could argue that is even worse. Les probably in the top 3 of our all time greatest players, whereas TTA as good as he is, well Liverpool have had quite a few more great players than us.
On the radio last night a match-going Liverpool fan (rarity) said it was the younger fans doing it. So perhaps this age thing once again. [Post edited 12 May 9:27]

That's not the case though. Yes, we were fifth in 1987/88 but England only ever had four qualifying places in the UEFA Cup which is the maximum any country was allowed.
England's was made up of usually 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the league plus the League Cup winners. That season, 2nd, 3rd and 4th were Man Utd, Forest and Everton respectively. Luton would have been the fourth team as LC winners.
The reason we qualified in 1983/84 for the following season's UEFA Cup by finishing fifth was because Liverpool had won the first division plus the League Cup. Obviously they qualified for the European Cup and their place in the UEFA Cup for winning the LC then moved down to the next highest placed club in the league, i.e. us rather than the LC runners up (Everton, who qualified for Europe anyway by winning the FA Cup).
So if anything it should be Luton fans who should be most aggrieved as they had their only chance so far at European football taken away from them.

I certainly don't agree with it.... especially given his boyhood status with them and how long he has played for them
But to put balance on the argument - perhaps its because they are sad he is going and trying to make it clear they think people should be loyal to liverpool.
I don't think its a liverpool problem, as others have pointed out - it happens in other football teams including ours... football is just extremely fickle.
I have never booed any of our players when they are trying their best for us! Boswinga, Joey Barton when they didn't give a flying something about us - deserved boos... but thats about it.. [Post edited 12 May 12:49]

Why shouldn’t they boo him? At the moment Liverpool are one of the best clubs in Europe and he has moved to a rival club. All the points about him coming through the youth system etc just make it worse!

Not condoning their fans - but the fact UEFA saw fit to host their showpiece final in an ageing, crumbling stadium, with haphazard ticketing and virtually non-existent stewarding/policing on the night, did not help either.
Still amazed to this day that they still went ahead and played the final, but I suppose the alternative was potentially much worse. | |
