Trent Alexander Arnold being booed 08:31 - May 12 with 6809 views | numptydumpty | Utter disgrace by Liverpool fans. Club legend. Local lad. Been there from a very young boy. Major part of their impressive glory days of recent years. Leaving for a new exciting challenge Not cost them a penny in terms of a transfer fee. What other club's fanbase would do this ?? Trent Alexander Arnold being booed on 12:38 - May 12 by CamberleyR | That's not the case though. Yes, we were fifth in 1987/88 but England only ever had four qualifying places in the UEFA Cup which is the maximum any country was allowed. England's was made up of usually 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the league plus the League Cup winners. That season, 2nd, 3rd and 4th were Man Utd, Forest and Everton respectively. Luton would have been the fourth team as LC winners. The reason we qualified in 1983/84 for the following season's UEFA Cup by finishing fifth was because Liverpool had won the first division plus the League Cup. Obviously they qualified for the European Cup and their place in the UEFA Cup for winning the LC then moved down to the next highest placed club in the league, i.e. us rather than the LC runners up (Everton, who qualified for Europe anyway by winning the FA Cup). So if anything it should be Luton fans who should be most aggrieved as they had their only chance so far at European football taken away from them. [Post edited 12 May 12:48]

Were you around or too young maybe? Not quite sure how’d you miss this if you were there for 92/93 season. It was a complete 5 year ban and then a gradual reintroduction of teams. We didn’t get back to normal quota until 95/96. So it was our 92/93 team that finished 5th that were denied European football due to Liverpool. US, Oxford and Wimbledon were clubs that qualifying would have made such a difference for. Ban made no difference to likes of Liverpool, Man U etc, but it would have made a huge difference to us both financially but also for us fans. Are we ever going to be in Europe again in my lifetime? It still annoys me to this day.

He joined for free and gave them 20 years of service. If anyone's entitled to run down their contract it's Trent.

We also would have qualified 87/88 as we finished 5th that year.

Not disagreeing with you but when you keep saying how much you love the club, what it means to you, then you can begin to understand the fans negative feelings. However they shouldn't boo, that is ridiculous.

Sorry loftboy, as I explained in my earlier post we would have missed out that season. Pre the ban, only 2nd-4th in the first division back then qualified for the UEFA Cup via the league. That is unless the league champions or one of the teams finishing 2nd-4th or the FA Cup winners also won the League Cup as happened in 83/84 (Liverpool league champions and Milk Cup winners), meaning we qualified then through finishing fifth. Still amazed to this day that they still went ahead and played the final, but I suppose the alternative was potentially much worse. |
I only learned recently that Liverpool had objected to Heysel as the venue due to its poor condition.

Poor facilities are no excuse for a crowd of drunken scum to cause that amount of mayhem that resulted in 40 odd deaths. In fact there is never any excuse to behave like that. Was anyone ever charged and prosecuted for those deaths, other than from the authorities?

Trent Alexander Arnold being booed on 09:11 - May 12 by bosh67 | I remember early on Paul Furlong being shouted at by our fans saying he wasn't fit to wear the shirt. He rode that out, particularly in the play off semi final, where he scored 'that goal' and went on to become a fans favourite. Football careers are short and Trent Arnold has given everything to the club and the community physically and financially, so it seems very dim for some fans to boo him. |
I would say that Furs had already become a fans favorite by that point.

Have at it, don't mind me. Not a football discussion forum, though. It's a QPR discussion forum. Only occasionally do those things overlap.

Trent Alexander Arnold being booed on 10:25 - May 12 by DWQPR | And these are the supporters who expect away supporters to be quiet when they sing that dirge YNWA, continually boo the national anthem, showed total disrespect during a minutes silence for the late Queen but then again expect total silence for the Hillsborough dead. It’s the 40th anniversary of Heysel this month. Will any of them remember and mourn the 40 odd Juve supporters that got crushed by that drunken scouse mob that night? Total scum support. Love to see TAA come back and score the winning goal for Madrid against them. |
Don't forget them refusing to play games on the anniversary of Hillsborough but happy to hold a massive parade on the anniversary of Heysel. Or the high profile campaign to try to release Michael Shields who smashed a concrete block over some old bloke's head and almost killed him. Or booing Abide With Me before the cup final FFS. Or snatching Champions League final tickets out the hands of child Liverpool supporters as they queued up for the final and others shoving their way in on mass despite having YNWA 97 tattooed on their back. etc.etc.

They're the absolute worst fans in the world. They're the reason I dislike Liverpool a tiny bit more than Chelsea and I hate Chelsea infinitely. |
Heard a bloke say unless you’re a scouser you wouldn’t understand and shouldn’t comment 🤣 Worse fans anywhere (apart from Leeds and Chelsea perhaps) I’m sure Liverpool would’ve known last summer he wasn’t going to sign a new contract so they could’ve sold him for decent money then but chose to keep him for this season. And if TAA didn’t want any boos he could’ve announced he was leaving after the season ended:

yes - I remember it well as it was the night before one of my A Levels. I remember watching in disbelief and could not believe they went ahead with the game. I've since heard on a BBC Podcast about football hooliganism (hosted by Tony Bellew - it's a decent listen) that the authorities were absolutely petrified of what might happen if they cancelled the game. Unimaginable what it must've been like to play in that game or to be in the crowd watching it after all those deaths

The alternative to "running his contract down" was to sign another contract, which he didn't want to do and wasn't obligated to do. It's not like he was stretching people along saying he'll sign and then bailing at the last minute, I think he's been pretty open
