Players who thought would be bang average but ended up being brilliant !! on 15:33 - May 13 with 2086 views | MrSheen | I’ve got one … Ray Wilkins. I’d swallowed all that Crab nonsense and obviously him getting sent off in Mexico 1986 was a turning point in English football. So when a Chelsea and Rangers has-been turns up for one last squeeze of the lemon like Ardiles, Brazil or Hodge, I wasn’t exactly thrilled. Smitten from that first afternoon at Selhurst, what an artist!

Actually yes. I actually expected Trevor Francis to be as good as he was. But yes Wilkins I was peed off we signed him. Was it his first game away at Palace with Peter Reid too and we won three nil and could have been many more. I actually cheered when he got sent off in 86 world cup in Mexico but yes one of my all time heroes he ended up. Another one, and he was only here for a handful of games was the black Andy Gray. Couple of bullet finishes at home to Man Utd Paul Wright too. Only here for a short time also. but performed excellently. Never kicked on though. [Post edited 13 May 19:31]

I remember being nonplussed at the signing of Gorkss - loved that bloke. Criminal how we treated him really. He was a better CB than Bruno Perone!

Bruno Perone is still playing local amateur football near me in Catalonia. Found his level

Having seen him ripping up our left side for Brentford the season before, I had very high hopes for him.

Players who thought would be bang average but ended up being brilliant !! on 07:09 - May 14 with 1123 views | Wilkinswatercarrier | Andy Sinton and Darren Peacock. Both signed from lower league clubs, so as a 12/13yo I was completely not bothered. Then saw Sinton score on his debut i think at home against Villa. Peacock signed from Hereford as an emergency along with Andy Tilson. So again, thought little of it.

"probably weren't brilliant" - for Matthew Rose, especially, you are bang on there. Wasn't it his appalling back pass that caused Chris Day to break his leg? Or something similar. I remember always being incredibly frustrated with him, on the odd occasion he wasn't injured.
Players who thought would be bang average but ended up being brilliant !! on 10:10 - May 14 with 941 views | Beestonranger | Steve Palmer. Remember him as an average centre half for Watford, but he was great - more perhaps in organisation and captaincy than his actual play - in that Ollie squad in the early 2000s.

IIRC, that game at Palace and the home game v Chelsea the following week, which we also won handsomely 4-2, were the only two games Wilkins & Reid ever played together in (Reid left for Man City after) and in both games they absolutely tore Palace and Chelsea apart. My brother was at both but I missed both as I was up at my Mum's, dammit.
