Pretty sure everyone saw this coming however it means it’s the start of release news. Hopefully not a Jimmy one in the coming days.

Lot to be said for a full back that is always available, never terrible and gives his all. Think we'll regret letting him go

No great surprise. A reasonable 6/10 player who was nearly always available. Are the probable replacements, Larkeche, Esquerdinha and Vale, going to be any better or as available?

He’ll be about as close to our opponents’ right wingers next season as he was this one. I’ll miss his set pieces.

For me he never seemed to get forward enough. Once he hit the halfway line he just kind of stopped. Very little overlapping or support play further up the pitch which was a shame as he always looked like he could whip a cross in on the rare occasions he did venture forward.
Probably the tactics from the manager rather then the player.

Christ, I hope the Brazillian steps up.

CN - "Whilst we are going our separate ways contractually, the Club will continue to support Ken in whatever way he wishes as he searches for his next adventure.”

Sounds a bit cryptic?

What exactly would it mean to go separate ways non-contractually?

I genuinely don’t wish him any ill will and wish him good luck in the future. We can all criticise different players for different reasons but I always get behind the players on the pitch and did so with Paal. Maybe not quite so much after the games talking to friends, family and chewing the fat on here , but that is part of being in a privileged job as a footballer . Like almost all of our ex players I’ll take an interest in their next chapters.
But when the best people can say about you is you are “always available” and “better than Larkeche”, then either you are struggling or the fan bases standards are now beyond low …or both .
The amount of goals or chances that came down that side were frightening. Targeted from very early on, first for his height which he dealt with reasonably well, but then for his defending .
We may end up with worse at left back next season, it’s not an impossibility, but personally I think it was time for a fresh face and fresh ideas in that position next season.

Over to you ‘recruitment team’.
Can’t wait( he says sarcastically)

Paal was one of the few bright sparks over the last 3 years and I feel sad that he's gone. He often had to cover the whole of the left flank (defence and attack) with little support. He came up with some vital goals and prevented many more. There have been some lame criticisms of him on this thread by people with short memories. Without him, we would have been screwed and in a lower division. I wish him well and hope he signs a good contract and gets lots of opportunities. Thanks Ken and best of luck.

Compared to some of the players that came in at the same time under Beale, such as Laird, he's been quite reliable.

Given his lack of height he has always had problems with balls delivered over him. When that happens he has had to wait for the opposition player to bring the ball down and then try and stop crosses coming in once the ball is on the ground.

As others have said he is quite mobile (although can get caught out of position). A lot seems to depend on who has near him: this season it just didn't work when he was paired with Fox away at Swansea in December (lost 3-0). Stoke away with Andersen in front of him a few weeks ago was another mess (lost 3-1).

Esquerdinha has five names including his commonly known as name, the least we can do is give him the respect to use one of them.

Lame critcismism you say ,bright sparks you say but how is it possible then he cost us more points than any other player this season and would have continued that trend next year.
As for his corners and free kicks embarassing would not even start describing them but sadly for us he kept on taking them like he was Ronaldo with the usual miserable outcome .
Still he was mostly available and tried hard so yes good luck to him

A target for some but for me was a solid left back.

Hardly ever injured.

Reasonable going forwards and dependable at the back

Got on with it last season, despite us trying to.sell.him on.

Good luck Ken. You did your job.

I think the implication is that while we will no longer share a contract together, we will always have our hearts as one.

Sorry, upvoted in error. I don’t think he was good enough. The set pieces were poor and I can’t understand why he took as many as he did but that’s on the manager.

Always liked him, thought he was important playing with whoever we had attacking on the left.

There were talks of him joining Twente here in NL earlier, which would be a huge step up for him. Finished 6th and just missed out on European competition.

Got a lot of time for Paal.

Always available, no histrionics, just got on with it.

Good luck to him.

Totally agree Steve. Far from a perfect player but baffled by some of the vitriol he got.

That Huddersfield goal was also a real sliding doors moment

Frustrating player. The bombing on, arriving late in the box showed he *could* do it, he just didn’t do it anywhere near often enough. Could no more play the midfield role Beale claimed he could than a fan from the stands. Couldn’t/wouldn’t defend, couldn’t cross, couldn’t take a set piece despite the practice we gave him, regularly criticised by Cifuentes for refusing to show for the ball, however he *was* available, which makes him the man with the Steve McLaren hair island in the land of the bald.

That said, deserves some sympathy for the way the club arrogantly treated him last summer and as such this season was a write off.

Overall, ‘meh’ from me.

I quite liked Paul, but on a podcast or patreon, think someone made the good point that there’s been little development in his game. Beyond the first handful of games where I think he struggled, he’s been consistent ever since but without taking the next step to becoming a regular 7/8 out of 10. The player I watch now, ability wise, still seems the same to me as when he walked through the door. I’d have hoped he’d kicked on a bit in those 3 years. But that said, I think he’s a better player than most, and did a reasonable job in a team where the left centre back and left winger are not usually our best defenders.

Same for me, very much in the Damien Delaney "OK" category. Not brilliant, not terrible, usually available to play. All the best Kenneth!

Good luck to his successor, whoever that may be...

I didn't particularly like or dislike Paal, thought he had some very poor games this season, but the fact I think it is a very fair point to highlight his excellent appearance record....

...shows how far we have sunk as a club.

We're looking for players that are willing to turn up on a regular basis. I mean, how Sunday League is that?! Sounds more like club cricket. Can't bowl, can't bat, can't field, but he's always here.

I think it's a shame to see him leave. Perhaps damning with faint praise but since our 2015 relegation, I think he's comfortably the best leftback we've had. And in terms of the current squad's problem positions, weaknesses or overpaid players - I'd have him as one of the least of our worries.

He's had the odd really poor game and this season has probably been his poorest (mitigating circumstances with a couple of injuries and what happened last summer) but I think what he offers in terms of quality in possession & dependability should not be under-estimated.

I don't understand Vale as a probable left back replacement.

He has only played in that position under Joseph Barton & I trust that man's judgement as much as I rate him as a person!

IMO, Vale is far more likely to be an attacking midfield player.

Kenny ofski on 09:59 - May 28 with 937 viewsed_83

Mixed feelings about this, seemed great when he arrived and has been solid throughout, but his game hasn’t really developed - though I’m sure all the upheaval at the club hasn’t helped - and he’s clearly been checked out for the entirety of this season. Suspect he’ll go on to have a decent career overseas, and wish him well. Big season required from whoever comes in to replace him, presumably one of Vale, Esquerdinha or Larkeche.

I mentioned this on another thread but I am beginning to think we don't like Left Backs.

Can't think of a popular one since Padula.

Totally agree.

Sincerely hope that we have someone in mind as his replacement with commensurate level of games played at championship level, is dependable and durable.

We've lost a player who averages a shade over 43 games played per season since he joined us. What we currently have as suggested first-choice alternatives at the club will not cut it in the championship.
