(No subject) (n/t) on 07:34 - May 28 by Wints76 | That's what I'm doing. It's our 25th wedding anniversary and the wife used to work on cruise ships so wants to go as a passenger. I chose Norway as the thought of sitting on my balcony watching us pass the fjords with a whisky appeals to me, but I'm not sure the whole cruise experience does [Post edited 28 May 7:40]

Have a great trip Mate. I’m not sure cruising is for me either. I tried my first cruise last year to Portugal, France and Spain .The highlight was walking on Gold beach and seeing various sites from WW 2 there which was great but I’m not sure about the whole cruise experience . I’m not sure I want to spend that much time with all those people lol. Dave Merrington was on our cruise and I briefly chatted to him on the Normandy trip as he was sat on our lunch table. Enjoy your Anniversary. 👍

I've done numerous cruises and have enjoyed them all. I do mix and match with Great Train Journeys in Europe and some trips across to the West Indies and States. Sailing from Southampton and back to takes a lot of the strain. So many lines sail from Southampton,I've found Cunard and Celebrity the best but they all have good and not so good points. Balcony is a must for me as I like the light and view.

Exactly. You get the weather, as well as the incredible buildings and architecture from the past. But also the history. Valletta is a decent place though not so sure about spending a fortnight there. Good stopping place from a cruise

Holidays on 12:36 - May 28 with 1168 views | Southamptonfan | Cruising is not for everybody, but I have grown to really enjoy it. It's the only way to visit so many places, so many countries that you wouldn't normally be able to do. I went round the Greek islands, it was fantastic visiting Santorini, Kefalonia. Athens, Crete all in one holiday. On the ship, there's shows, a cinema, table tennis, a games room, numerous bars, restaurants, swimming, a library and so much more. Some areas of the ship are hectic and busy but there are always quiet areas of the ship, if you need to chill. Drinking cocktails and beer looking out at the sea is quite an experience. Sailing into places with incredible scenery is also wonderful. There is plenty of food 24 hours a day. There are few downsides. If you want to see a place, the ship isn't there long, so you have to be up early to see the place. But ofcourse you don't have to get off the ship. You have to pay for WiFi usually. Paying for a drinks package is an added cost and the pools are very busy if you are somewhere hot. I would love to do Norway next. [Post edited 28 May 12:38]

The only problem with the Norway trip is that it is not always as the brochure (remember those?) photos with clear blue skies and white top mountains. Quite often you don't get to see the top of the mountains as they're covered in cloud and there is a fair amount of rain But when it's not raining it's fantastic. Simon Reeves on his current Scandinavia programme is right, it's a beautiful country and most Norwegians speak English which is an added bonus, unless you're fluent in Norwegian of course!!!

You'll love it. Went there a few years ago. Lovely people who are always smiling & happy to help you. Lots to see and do. Malta has a big Italian influence and there are plenty of good Italian restaurants, especially in Valetta. Good seafood restaurants down by the waterside too. As you say, lots of history. You can visit the WW2 shelters that were carved out of the cliffs in Valetta which have been maintained all these years. There's a large domed cathedral worth visiting. A German bomber dropped a bomb through the dome during the war which failed to go off, rolled across the floor, and is considered a miracle! Lots more to see in Malta too. They are very proud of their wartime history & the connections with Britain. We hired a car for the week which was pretty cheap and a great way to see the whole of Malta (and they drive on the correct side of the road which makes it easy). Took it across to Gozo on the ferry which was cheap and well worth a day out. Then there's The Blue Grotto boat trip to the caves, again, well worth it. Lovely friendly people the Maltese - which always helps.

Aye. My wife and daughter went on a Norway cruise last summer and saw sod all of the fjords due to fairly incessant rain.

Cheers matey. I can't be doing with having to dress up for dinner etc, but I have promised I'll do it one night. And I can't be doing with small talk about cars or mortgages if I have to share a table with someone. But I am looking forward to it! I really should go to Malta. Fantastic WWII history where the island as a whole faced unbelievable pressure to survive before a ship eventually got through. My mum grew up there so I will get there one day.
Holidays on 16:34 - May 28 with 1027 views | City_boy | Just back from touring around Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Very, Very hot, but sights at Chichén-Itzá, Uxmal and Tulum were amazing. Never been so happy to come home to 15c ! A quick message to my miss-informed mates, 'no I didn't see any drug cartels or street shoot outs !' Also a quick call out to BA for a crap flight - 3 toilets for all of Premium and Economy on a full flight. Now got 20/20 cricket against Essex and Simple Minds in Soton later next month, to look forward to. [Post edited 28 May 16:38]

I was born in Malta. My dad was a submariner for 29-years and got posted there for 3-years with my mum and older brother. Despite leaving school and going straight to sea for 12-years, I never once visited Malta on any of the ships I was on! All over Europe, Africa, the USA, Caribbean, the Med, Middle East, Asia, etc etc - but never Malta! So went there on holiday a few years back just to see where I was born (Naval hospital at Mtarfa). As mentioned, well worth a week of anyone's time & money if you're looking for a really nice break. The WW2 side of things/history is right up my street of course.

Holidays on 17:32 - May 28 with 956 views | saint901 | Off the US and Canada on 4 June for about a month. We're visiting our son who lives in Maine and doing a nine day road trip to the closer Canadian cities. Then it's Lisbon in September (never been before). And then New Zealand in mid November and return home 23 December. Partly to holiday, partly work because I wrote a policy paper for their Gov't and they want to go ahead and have asked (and paid for) me to go out. We were in Aus/NZ same time last year and had fabulous weather. Hoping for the same but expecting it to be a bit more spring like.

Yeh, my Grandad was stationed there after the war, so my mum went to the Naval school there. My eldest lad was originally going there on his current world tour on the PoW, but that has changed to Gibralter now I think [Post edited 28 May 20:53]

Holidays on 20:48 - May 28 with 806 views | kernow | Malta is very interesting although I was only there briefly and didn’t get the chance for a good look around. My Dad didn’t have fond memories, he described it as « the land of bells and smells ». He served on HMS Southampton, a survivor after she was stuka’d during convoy escort operations in 1942. He didn’t have many war recollections that he would share but this one was vivid.
