Official. The welsh language is on the decline 11:43 - May 29 with 3702 viewsWhiterockin

Much as many deny the truth, the facts are there for all to see. No I am not proud of the situation but we have to be realists to plan for the future. The aim to create 1,000,000 Welsh speakers by 2050 will never happen, let's be realistic and plan accordingly. The sooner Drakeford is gone the better, he just won't see sense.

This is a difficult one. No one wants to see the language die but the lingua Franca of this country is English and always will be.

My view is that the ‘stick’ approach by WAG such as enforcing the Welsh Language Policy on businesses and individuals is counterproductive . The example cited in the article, though not very well explained seems to suggest that planning applications must be submitted bilingually (?). That’s ridiculous and will create opposition to the language rather than encouragement to learn.

The mandatory Welsh lessons in school up to GCSE level is also a policy likely to discourage take up as kids don’t see the language as ‘cool’.

This won’t sit well with some but I think if the supporters of the Welsh language took themselves less seriously and tried to demonstrate the benefits of learning the language but at the same time not trying to compete with English (let’s face it, that is what they are doing) then I think there’d be a greater uptake.

My 2d worth.

Requiring planning applications to be bilingual is one of the most barking mad suggestions I've ever seen.

This pretty much sums up my thoughts. If you force something on people they tend to rebel, make a strong case and encourage and you have more chance of getting support.

The article doesn’t say that planning applications have to be bilingual.
This is what the article actually said.

“Drakeford said there is more to be done to draw lines on a map but work will focus on identifying and adapting areas where Welsh language is a "part of everyday life".
It will make sure Welsh language speakers who want to stay and live in those communities are able to do so, he said, which will be achieved by supporting housing and education.
Planning powers will help make sure those who use Welsh in everyday life are provided a house to live in and are "not deprived out of the area" Drakeford added.
Drakeford said defining who can live in these places to support the Welsh language has not been done before.”

The way I read that is that in some areas, maybe social housing or new build estates will have quotas to preserve the Welsh language. There could also be directions regarding school places etc.

If you are brought up speaking Welsh , then you speak it all your life
Same with English

They forced English on all the Celtic nations so there is that rather important context to the current situation. Accusing the languages that were almost eradicated by deliberate state actions, of being forced on others is a bad joke.

The FAW has done wonders over recent years to give the language a lift.
Shirley thats the modern template.
Languages should be fun.

Welsh Govt has taken a fairly balanced approach.
Every child in Wales should leave school with basic conversational welsh, welsh govt seem too focused more on exams etc.

Signage is important.

A language which to be honest is only spoken in rural areas where it has always been the first language and rightly so ,it will never die as enough see the need for it but neither will it ever become the 1st language of Wales and the more its enforced upon people the more will kick back. I've never been able to converse in Welsh which imo is a loss and one I regret.

The Senedd hasn't taken a balanced appraoch though, school kids do not have a choice, they are forced to learn Welsh and tthat is a fact.

All official letter have to be bilingual, another fact.

A balanced approach would be telling people tbey have to accomodate Welsh speakers and provide for them to be communicated with in welsh where asked.

The FAW have done a better job than the Senedd. Where people want to learn welsh povide the resources but you can't try to force it on people.

None of my sons friends, nor him, use Welsh outside school.

The fact that despite them trying to force it on people it is still in decline proves the point. The Senedd needs to trt a different approach but as with most things Drakeford, he can't see or at least can't accept a different way. he always thinks he's right. The evidence says something different.

No they don’t but it may receive the unwanted attention like that of a pampered poodle if it keeps on being thrust in our faces.

Keep on saying “you will, you must” will result in people saying “no, we won’t!”.

There is no real reason for anyone to learn Welsh. It's not a major international language, and it's far from the most used even within its own geographical region. I'd wager that even Arabic and Polish are far more commonly spoken on a daily basis this side of Offa's Dyke.

The learning of it should be encouraged, but not mandatory. Not in schools, nor anywhere else. If it's going to survive it should do so on its own merits and because people love it, not because Governments piss away millions on what essentially amounts to lingual CPR.

Would it be more beneficial for a child to leave school with A levels and fluent in Welsh or a language like Mandarin. I would say it would depend if the child is ambitious or not.

I'd say Spanish or French would be of more use than Mandarin. Most Chinese that they'll deal with on a certain level will probably be English speakers anyway.

9,000 people in Wales speak Arabic and 21,000 speak Polish.

75,000 people in Carmarthenshire alone speak Welsh.

I would suggest the Arabs and Poles have a bit of catching up to do.

You might have had a point if that's what I'd said. I wish people would actually read stuff before jumping in.

My actual words were, and I'll quote them to make it easier for you, is that "Arabic and Polish are far more commonly spoken on a daily basis", which I would happily wager is true.

There might be more "Welsh Speakers" (citation needed, I work with people recruited purely for their fluency in Welsh who have barely spoken it since school), but it's just not used all that much.

Problem is people jump in without reading what exactly has been said is because passion pops up
It's impossible to discuss this
I've proven this over twenty years on these forums
And no, nobody want the language to die and it won't
It will never die out
