No I am not proud of the situation but we have to be realists to plan for the future. The aim to create 1,000,000 Welsh speakers by 2050 will never happen, let's be realistic and plan accordingly. The welsh language is on the decline on 10:36 - May 31 by SullutaCreturned | The choice...it's interesting to hear people advocate for choice after school kids are FORCED to kearn Welsh in school. They don't have that choice in school do they. As I keep on saying, those who want to learn Welsh then great, the option should be there. I'm 58, I went to Oystermouth junior Comp after Dunns lane Primary (which is now houses) and I wasn't allowed to learn Welsh because somehow I was in the upper stream, I did a year of Latin, what a waste of a year. If I'd had the choice back then, Latin or Welsh i would have taken Welsh because at least it was relevant (myself not having ever planned on doing anything medical or legal, professionally) so yes, choice is important. Spanish weren't options back then. Now this side of Offa's Dyke I rarely hear Welsh spoken, when we lived in Trallwn we heard Polish every day, there was a sizeable Polish community, we had Polish friends our son was in school with their kids. In Skewen I still rarely hear Welsh, out and about in work I rarely hear Welsh, nnot even up the valley but I do hear other non English languages, I can't tell you exactly what they are but urdu/Hindi would be good guesses as well as African languages. People are free to learn whatever language they want, or should be, it should be their CHOICE though. Having the choice is the important bit, even when in school. We give 16 year olds the vote afer all, surely they are (or should be) free to choose what language they want to learn? |

Even though I'm a monoglot I'm very aware that english is a bastardised language that has mugged most languages around the world as it has progressed. I cant remember the direct english phrase translated from Mandarin but the rough literal translation is "fragrant rose"... it actually means slut. Guess which nation supplies the majority of the worlds consumer products (yes i know that you know that fact). You are effectively no different from Trampie, you are a language nationalist. How ironic. |
Except that English is a compulsory subject taught in Chinese schools from the early ages. It's one of three mandatory classes they take, alongside Chinese and Maths. It's also a key component of their college entry exams. It's one of the reasons why Chinese students flock to the UK and US. There are nearly five times more Chinese students in the UK than in France, for example. Bit odd for them to do that if English is such a bastardised language eh?

Most modern kanguages are bastardised though. English has taken words from latin, french and Germanic while Spanish has taken from various sources that include South American languages. Also, as we should well know, within any language there are regional and social dialects and slang and jargon too which are bastardisations of the mother tongue...aren't they?

Indeed. Languages are living, thieving things. The reason I suggest that French and Spanish would be better options is largely down to the colonial spread of them both. There aren't many places on the Planet where someone with a decent grasp of English, French and Spanish couldn't make themselves understood.

My son regular goes to meetings in Michigan, Madrid , Lyon , Bavaria and Milan All the meetings are conducted in the international language which is English However, he's expected to be able to have basic conversations with colleagues away from business on their languages He took French Spanish and Russian in school and I'm glad he did Knowing Welsh is lovely for domestic consumption And contrary to what some say , it does not help on learning a foreign language Try correlating Welsh with Portuguese , Russian or Hungarian Many Russians can speak other Eastern European tongues especially those using Cyrillic alphabet and Northern Italians often speak German

They only have to give us 10%, so about 1300 seats. Tickets will be like hot cakes, season ticket holders first, and I would guess 4 - 5000 will, want those 1300.
| Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

It'll depend then on when in the season it is and how many points people need. We plan on doing more away trips again next season, I think we will pass double figures and we both want Wrexham to be on eof those trips.

I'd say you have little chance with Wrexham even if it is midweek. Preston is not far for you or one with a large away end. We always have a large away following, next season if we start well will be off the scale.

I know Derpdale and Preston well enough Blackburn is easier as Preston traffic is horrific Pity Blackpool didn't come up I might have to call in a favour for Wrexham

I dispute this "And contrary to what some say , it does not help on learning a foreign language". I believe being bilingual helps people learn third and fourth languages. Learning languages and an ability to do it, is a state of mind. This is why polyglots can speak more than two quite often. Monoglots can rarely get past first base, If you can ride a push bike you are more competent on a motorbike.

Some languages do make learning certain other languages more easy, Welsh and German are fairly close I believe. Most people could learn a language, a lot just don't want to/can/t be bothered.
