Official. The welsh language is on the decline 11:43 - May 29 with 4371 views | Whiterockin | Much as many deny the truth, the facts are there for all to see. No I am not proud of the situation but we have to be realists to plan for the future. The aim to create 1,000,000 Welsh speakers by 2050 will never happen, let's be realistic and plan accordingly. The sooner Drakeford is gone the better, he just won't see sense. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwy6n8gy043o

Official. The welsh language is on the decline on 22:11 - May 29 by Whiterockin | Would it be more beneficial for a child to leave school with A levels and fluent in Welsh or a language like Mandarin. I would say it would depend if the child is ambitious or not. |
I’d say it depends what the ambition is. Learning another language has well researched cognitive benefits and in that regard, it doesn’t really matter what the language is. Learning a language is very good thing, beyond just the ability to converse. I think in wales it might as well be Welsh. It won’t be long before AI is live translating (if it’s not already) so it makes sense to me to keep it going for a cultural perspective. I can see how forcing to 16 will cause teens to push back, mind.

Official. The welsh language is on the decline on 17:03 - May 30 by Whiterockin | Exactly right. In Wales there should be a data base where we can register our preference English or Welsh and all communication is through our preferred choice. Simple and it would save a fortune. |
A very easy solution, growing up in Swansea in the 60s I never heard Welsh spoken and it's no different after all these years

As I have stated before my grandchildren go to Welsh medium schools and can converse in Welsh. They don't speak Welsh out of school and rarely speak the language. The only time they use the language is while participating in sport as the opposition don't know their plan. I bet that throws a spanner in the stats.

That’s entirely up to them and their parents, at least they will have the choice.

Not really. The argument is that it would not take much for all children in wales to be able to enjoy conversational welsh by the time they leave comp. No exams, but having fun and talking football, music or whatever. The decision to use it is then with the individual. But its having the choice thats the important bit. I went to junior and comp schools in Swansea decades ago and we all did welsh until 13.

That maybe because of the population of Arabia and Poland, just a thought like, dear me the population of wales is around 3 million mun, you cannot compare the languages spoken in either of those two compared to Wales and we as born and bred Welsh people should at least be able to understand the language, I wish I could I really do, I'm proud to be Welsh.

There is nothing cosmopolitan about large numbers of Swansea youth. Cities breed poor values cre and state dependency in many cases.Snall towns as many know are better safer places to live often with better educated people. Swansea will become more Asian if is what the Swansea people voted for in 2016 .

And as ever, you betray your own flaws in regards to geographical/political diversity, as then most nuance is lost in the total non-understanding of another language. Even though I'm a monoglot I'm very aware that english is a bastardised language that has mugged most languages around the world as it has progressed. I cant remember the direct english phrase translated from Mandarin but the rough literal translation is "fragrant rose"... it actually means slut. Guess which nation supplies the majority of the worlds consumer products (yes i know that you know that fact). You are effectively no different from Trampie, you are a language nationalist. How ironic.

If you are sober then you have bigger issues Nobody spoke Welsh on Swansea town of old There was more in Morristown and up the valley and from Gowerton west to Llanelli On the big council estates ,Welsh was often ridiculed Proud to be Welsh ? Most were too concerned with keeping a roof over their head than flying the flag or telling all they should learn Welsh My mum hated Welsh but she's well gone now so no hateful replies

The choice...it's interesting to hear people advocate for choice after school kids are FORCED to kearn Welsh in school. They don't have that choice in school do they. As I keep on saying, those who want to learn Welsh then great, the option should be there. I'm 58, I went to Oystermouth junior Comp after Dunns lane Primary (which is now houses) and I wasn't allowed to learn Welsh because somehow I was in the upper stream, I did a year of Latin, what a waste of a year. If I'd had the choice back then, Latin or Welsh i would have taken Welsh because at least it was relevant (myself not having ever planned on doing anything medical or legal, professionally) so yes, choice is important. Spanish weren't options back then. Now this side of Offa's Dyke I rarely hear Welsh spoken, when we lived in Trallwn we heard Polish every day, there was a sizeable Polish community, we had Polish friends our son was in school with their kids. In Skewen I still rarely hear Welsh, out and about in work I rarely hear Welsh, nnot even up the valley but I do hear other non English languages, I can't tell you exactly what they are but urdu/Hindi would be good guesses as well as African languages. People are free to learn whatever language they want, or should be, it should be their CHOICE though. Having the choice is the important bit, even when in school. We give 16 year olds the vote afer all, surely they are (or should be) free to choose what language they want to learn?

There are a lot of things taught in schools that seem pointless, I didn't know cats did physics though I mean, Logarithms, seriously? Teach them useful stuff. They can't even do their times tables anymore and rely on the calculator for even simple maths. There's no home economics anymore, or so I was told. There must be a better way. even if they do make changes, what languages they learn should still be their choice, would you agree.
