Bar a few clubs there was never going to be sufficient interest in clubs’ fans travelling to this nonsense. Doubt we’d be filling stadiums if it was held here during the working week.

Soccer in the US on 00:16 - Jun 14 with 2356 views | Match82 | Yeah I'm not sure there's any relevance to world cup interest. Hopefully there is, it's bloody annoying that there's no games in Chicago and I'm already going to have to fork out for plane tickets and hotels, if the prices for the games stay reasonable then that's one less cost

Soccer in the US on 08:14 - Jun 14 with 2158 views | derbyhoop | I'm sure there are plenty of fans who will give a USA world cup, in Trumpland, a wide swerve. Our Australian family have decided not to go and we had thought of meeting them there. It's not just Trump, though. Many stadia are out of town, with limited public transport.

They’re determined to give it to Saudi and a few others as often as possible under the guise of rotating between continents. With the number of games and stadia required now there’ll be fewer countries capable of hosting so we’ll increasingly see multiple country hosts and the additional travel and cost for fans. The 2030 ‘centenary’ nonsense ticks a box for Africa and Europe along with South America then we’re all off to Saudi in 2034. Montserrat 2038 will be good.

Mexico 86 was originally scheduled for Columbia but they withdrew in late 82. Mexico, having hosted the 70 tournament was chosen as the replacement. It was the only country, in that region, that could feasibly be ready in time, as it already had reasonable facilities in place. The film of the 82 WC, from memory, has a fan holding a banner with Columbia 86 in one of the closing scenes. However, I agree it's ridiculous they are getting a third go.

USA today aren't an overtly politically driven media source, which is why chose this article, and to dismiss any link isn't really valid. Over a fairly broad spectrum of online sources, there are many concerns that even support staff from countries taking part on the US list may not be safe once they enter the country and the fans are already making the choice not to go in numbers due to safety concerns. I get that this is a club based event but similar noises are being made wrt travelling to the US based WC games.

I don't think the article is biased I just think that the club world cup and the actual world cup are just fundamentally different things. It's like looking at a county cricket match not selling out and saying "wow nobody is interested in cricket, we should be worried about whether people will buy tickets for the ashes" Safety concerns are an interesting twist but based on what we are seeing right now the world will be a completely different animal in terms of foreign policies in 12 months time (could be better could be worse)

The point about stadiums being out in the middle of nowhere is a fair one - most of the ones that ARE downtown are even worse because there's limited decent public transport options so 70,000 people are trying to drive down the same street at the same time 30 minutes before the game starts

America is a country that has predominantly evolved from Europeans, South Americans and Africans, none of which have this unbelievable sense of nauseating hyperbole and all the other appalling behaviour we’ve come to see, so just where the hell did it come from? [Post edited 15 Jun 16:31]

My post referenced 6 of us that wont be going because of Trump and his acolytes. Given the widespread coverage of deportations, by ICE, of people who "look" foreign, without any due process, I believe there will be many who wont take the risk. Of course, there will be 1000s who will go anyway. Good luck and ensure you keep all your documents with you.

Normally you are a good poster but this one is not acurate you should educate yourself on the immigration situation before posting please . ICE is deporting "foreign looking" people because they are in the country illegally and most have deportation orders against them. This includes all kinds of crimes some horrible and some that warrant removal immediatly. The others are simply caught up in the sweeps but have no paperwork so they are removed Where was the due process when they crossed the border illegally and where was the outcry when women and children were raped ,murdered or taken for sex rings during the caravans north to the US border The riots and looting are just scum taking advantage of the protests who are being paid and supplied to cause chaos and thats whats being covered. Anybody coming to the US for the WC has to have documents (like entry to every country in the planet )and will not only be safe but have an excellent time and get a free suntan. The transport system is pretty bad as mentioned above because everybody drives and the Stadiums are located accordingly .

I won't be going, Bannerman. And none of my friends, be they English or Irish, are going either. Not while Trump is in charge, and not while there's a huge percentage of the citizenry who support such a person. I've been lucky to visit the U.S. twice, and I hope to again some day, but in the meantime there are many beautiful places to visit and the U.S. is currently not one of them.

It's fair enough to have a viewpoint that if you're here illegally you should be subject to deportation, some people will agree with the view, others won't. But you absolutely cannot use this as justification for it: "This includes all kinds of crimes some horrible" and then say this: "The others are simply caught up in the sweeps"

Without due process you cannot KNOW (as opposed to a guess) if somebody is illegal. And, as you admit, some innocents are getting caught up in sweeps. Some may well be illegal and/or criminal, but that doesn't mean they aren't entitled to justice. In UK, we've had issues over Windrush and people struggling to prove they have a Right to Remain. Fundamentally the systems are far from foolproof.

There are over one million people (possibly much more as I've not seen any recent government reports), who went through the 'Due Process' of a court hearing with legal representation (paid for by the American Taxpayer), that were given deportation notices and have ignored that judgement and remained in the United States. Just a word to the foot soldiers for the establishment who support people that undermine the working class of a country...your servants are pissed off. [Post edited 15 Jun 17:18]
