Is it me or does he seem quiet, nervous, and very unsure of himself. He needs to up the volume a bit.
I'm really not sure about this guy. I will give him a chance, support the team, I desperately hope I'm wrong, but he reminds me of Nathan Jones getting nervous and having a breakdown when the pressure got too much but this guy is much quieter. He's very young, at a big club in this league with promotion expected. What am I not seeing, or what is it others are seeing?
Happy to be proved wrong. He just seems quietly spoken, not very inspiring or authoritive etc etc. Perhaps he needs time to come out of himself. It's another SR experiment and I am not seeing it with this guy. Early days I know, but come on where is the passion, the enthusiasm, the excitement, the camaraderie with the players?
“At a big club in this league with promotion expected”.
There’s the rub though Southamptonfan, we expect promotion but really do our owners and their employees at Sports Republic ?
Having royally f cked up last season do they want the hassle and expense of trying to compete in the Premier League again or will they be happy just to be also rans in The Championship.
David Brooks allegedly going to W B A and not ourselves suggests to me that with Sports Republic The Championship is going to be our level for the foreseeable future.

I, for one, is not expecting promotion saintmark1976. My expectations are around between 8-12th in the finish. It has nothing to do with the appointment of Will Still as we cannot comment on his ability until we have seen it and I am willing to give him a chance (no pun intended). My reasons for being very conservative about success this year (depending on how you recognise success):-
1. I think it will be a difficult league with many challengers and I think the points will be more evenly distributed quite widely; 2. I think having some experienced players recruited is essential and whilst I believe in youth and looking to the future with prospects we were usually better when we bought in players that have that bit of gravitas and presence in key positions and in games which could be difficult or need to be managed. We just don't have any natural leaders on the pitch - at least none that I have noticed for a long time. McMenemy was a master of mixing youth and experience (admittedly a different era); 3. We traditionally start seasons slowly even when we are doing well. I am not convinced will be ready enough for the start despite the earlyish appt of Still. It will take time for the team to bed in and for Still to know his best side. Arguably that is the same for other clubs - or some other clubs.
I am not being defeatist or negative as I think it will be an exciting entertaining season and I am looking forward to it. Surely it can't be as bad or as depressing as last season???? I am just managing my own expectations. Also, it is no good us being arrogant as a club just because we have been in the PL and believe we have some eternal right to success at this level. Many will see us as one of their cup finals and will up their game against former PL clubs. If we are not prepared to fight and scrap at times then we may live to regret it.
Anyway, that is my take. I am sure many of you will disagree or can argue against it, as is your want.

Negativity on this thread 10/10.
Agreed! Half full brigade.
Still is analytical and calculating. He's watching, judging, assessing. Of course he's not going to be hugging everyone and shouting OTT messages to "Rhino" and "Tay Tay" ...
I'm excited for this season, genuinely. If it's rubbish, then we go again, but I feel things are heading in the right direction this time.

8th-12th? Do you have any idea just how weak the sides are in the Championship? Most can go seasons with only spending a million or 2 on a player and are constructed from loan deals.
Last time we were here we had numerous players whose wages on their own were more than the entire Plymouth squad.
"Playing Devil's Advocate since 15th January 2014"
I like this appointment, granted no experience here but he clearly knows how we wants to play If he can adapt as he has said he does then lets give the guy a go First ten games then we will see I am also intrigued to see his first selection - will Slack Jack waltz into the starting line up again? Will he actually play a striker? Will he play Dibling where e should IE number 10? Will he play a back 4 or are we gonna have 3 average CBs and two marauding full backs
Top 6 would be good thsi season

You know when you write something, post it and wish you hadn't and wish you could delete it and pretend you never did write it - this is one of those moments.
I perhaps did not convey myself that well though I cannot see anywhere where I have suggested anything negative about our new manager. I have no view on him at all. I don't know him and I have no reason to believe he won't be successful (whatever success looks like). I hope he is the best thing since sliced bread. I want success, I want him to do well and for us to have a great season - we have had too much dross and too many changes in recent seasons both at manager and player level.
As regards the make up of the league - yes, there is a real mix but it is not an easy league and I was just trying to convey that we cannot afford to be arrogant and assume we can walk it - but we may!
I am looking forward to the season, going to games again with a sense that we can compete and win games.

Ye my fear is he won't handle the players that well. seems a bit of a mummy's boy just don't see him getting the respect from the players if things start badly

That’s one of my fears as well.
I want him to do well (top 8 or so) but I can’t help thinking before December Dragan will be looking for his 8th manager since the loon brought us.

A1079 has always been one of the more thoughtful posters on here so I believe him when he says he didn't really convey this thoughts that well. As for Still, bloody hell, we haven't even kicked a ball under him yet and people are panicking. How about we don't set any expectations and just see what happens? And even enjoy the ride. Hes not been here 5 minutes, he's bound to take a while to feel comfortable. Anyway I don't need him tap dancing for the media like a pound shop Klopp. I just care the players buy in and he can pick an effective team. For all we know right now, we could win the league by ten points!

I too couldn’t care less if Still comes across as quiet, more importantly can he mould a decent team together for this league? It is impossible to make any accurate predictions at the start of the summer transfer window anyway. By the end of August we’ll obviously be able to make much more reasoned and qualified predictions for the season ahead. The squad, and those of our promotion rivals, will undoubtedly look very different at that stage.

This isn't his first gig. He's already handled players of a similar status to those at Southampton. It is more likely that, like a lot of us, he takes a little time to build up relationships when embarking on a new job. I prefer this to someone who comes in all guns blazing and shouting his mouth off. Give him a bit of time.

Its Results and Performances that matter. That's how he should be judged.
I think we are all guilty of pre-judging players & coaches. But I did think it to be a strange choice by SR appointing WS as our new coach. But history tells us that SR have been guilty of making very strange decisions. I just hope that they've got it right this time & WS turns out better than the previous coaches we've had. Only time will tell, so let's give him that time before we judge him.
