I saw he played 84 mins and on the highlights there was a great turn and pass for Kone's goal. How was he the rest of the match?

The thing with Madsen is he has that ability to put in a defence splitting pass, always looks to go forward with the ball and thats what the manager wants, get the bal into those attacking players as quickly as possibly and although at the moment it's once or twice a game that he does this but with Varane next him and the likes of Saito and Vale coming into the middle to help I can see the benefits and his shortcoming are not being exposed.

He does drive me mada bit when he disapears in games but I think thats just the type of player he is and his defensive side has got better even if it's a long way short of what we need at times.

We'll have games where the riskis too high and you play a 3 man midfield and someone like a Field or Hayden in there but for now I quite like that the manager is having a look to try and find a solution to our midfield issues

Exactly Dave. He’ll be played in the kind of games where his strengths are not outweighed by his weaknesses. In those matches I think he’ll be valuable.

That second goal sums it up for me, too often that ball hits that point of midfield and goes sideways or backwards but no messing about ball in early to Kone who has some time and space to do something with it.

Agreed,

I was debating yesterday about whether the pass was slightly underhit or not, but there's no doubt that he spotted the pass well and got it off very quickly.

Simple 10 Yard Pass to Kone which he likely took from a 0.1XG to a 1.0XG with a side step & Yeboah type finish,

Other than that, seriously did nothing, a passenger yet again,

Two worldies covered his non performance, even Gazza would struggle to dig anything positive out of that 90 minutes.

We still find times to be negative about Madsen when he is doing a very decent job for the Team, if he wasn't he would not get a start like he has in 12 or so of the last 15 matches.

The pass he made for the Kone goal was excellent weighted ball to an excellent area which give Kone time & space to do his bit but many appear to think nothing of it. He certainly did, he 'showed up' in space to receive the ball, yes showed for the ball!!! (which I hear he doesn't do!!), knew what to do, early, because of his vision and forward mentality and done what he had to do to give Kone the opportunity to make space strike at goal - Ask Kone what he thought of the ball he got from Madsen.

Of course he has weaknesses, don't they all??, they all go missing in games, they all give the stray pass, they all miss a tackle or header, they all make the wrong decisions and so on.......but posters appear to think that Madsen does it more than most, if not all of the other selected players. I can assure you all that he is no worse than many of the players and by the way just because Smyth or Kaito run around more than Madsen it does not mean Madsen is a passenger or they are more of an asset to the Team. He has a lot of other qualities that they do not have and hence why he plays/starts most weeks.

Thanks everyone for your insights. The reason I asked the question is that I find Madsen an enigma but he's creative, got an eye for a pass and a goal and is a different type of player to anyone else in the squad. I would like him to do well but he can be passive and frustrating. He reminds me a lot of Mike Fillery who in the days before message boards divided opinion in the ground by a) coming from Chelsea and b) strolling around a lot which looked like indifference. It took half a season before we realised his creative virtues and it helped that he had Gary Waddock was doing the leg work next to him in midfield.

Try supporting the players?

Is this aimed at me or Madsen?

Maybe that what's our Team Captain was yelling at Madsen full-on after Saito's goal v Charlton?

Lowest number of touches of all our players v Wrexham, for our so called ball player & creator?

Can you imagine his running stats?

How about he supports Varane and the team and earns the wages we've paid him to date?

I get Madsen is a project and we are trying not to devalue our investment, but with this squad, we have higher priorities.

Not only is that stat for touches wrong but if you want to try cherry pick stats how about...

Chances created:

Vale - 5
Madsen - 4
4 others - 1

That is our so called "ball player and creator". This is a forum so feel free to post your opinions but this stinks of a really horrible agenda

I get it . He isn’t a perfect footballer.. very far from it .

I did something very similar to Park Royal last season after the Hull away game .
We won , but I went in two footed on Madsen (and Ashby ) after the game as I thought they were a disgrace when they came on , much to the anger of some on here . For me they nearly cost us a huge 3 points at the time .
Cifuentes took Ashby off again , but he could’ve easily have removed Madsen instead .

But I can see improvements in all parts of his game since then .
I will also admit that I could be comparing him to a painfully low bar he previously set himself , and he was hiding in games as recent as Watford , but I think if you are going to dig them out when they are poor, and he has been, then when they start showing better form it’s important to recognise that too.
Whether he remains in the side when the winter kicks in , we’re yet to find out , but just seeing a player through the prism of previous form is just a bit blinkered for me .

I have been a vocal critic of Madsen. Didn’t go to the game on Saturday, but when saw the result and saw that he got an assist all I thought was happy days!

I don't really want to be lumped in with the 'haters' but here is my take.

Yes, I thought he was OK but there were still signs of the old failings. I think this may be one where you get a different perspective at the game than to what you can see on a stream.

It strikes me that Madsen should be appraised in two ways; his on the ball contributions and his off-ball contribution.

On the ball: he looks an accomplished and creative player, easily good enough for this level.

Off the ball: he still resembles Bambi a lot of the time. As Mart says above he has definitely improved and this was evident on Saturday but as Mart also says this is an improvement from a low base.

Let's hope the upward trajectory continues.

True dat.

I still remember the pen he took in one of his first matches. Short run up, no stutter step, placed with perfect power and accuracy.

I'm certainly not a Madsen fan after last season's dismissal efforts, but this season he looks an improved version of himself.

That first header he challenged for against Charlton there were quite a lot of amused jeers, but the more he actually showed for the defensive side (admittedly for better or worse), I feel like he earned at least a shred of respect from the crowd.

For my money I'm glad he's turned himself into at least a functioning member of the team. Let's hope he keeps it up. Certainly hasn't let us down in the last few games whereas he couldn't do anything right last season.

Oh, and he needs to cut his hair!

Shit but local

I watched the full 90 mins today and that pass was both well weighted and hit with the outside of his boot. He put me in mind of a conductor inasmuch as he can't play all the instruments in the orchestra but he certainly gets them playing a tune. I was no fan of his last season but have no real issues with him being the team regularly. The real surprise was how poor Jimmy Dunne was overall. That's not to take away him rescuing Nardi a couple of times.

I've watched it back a lot as well, Esox.

We'll have to differ on this one, but it's no big thing anyway, it's just one pass and either way I do think that he did well to spot it and get it away.

I think Brian's probably right, but underhitting was better than overhitting in this instance as the latter may have given the defender or even the keeper a better chance.

How about Kone's sublime two touches, though?

Quality. And the finish was unreal. Somoen on here mentioned Yeboah, and I think that nails it!

As many of us feel we must say, I am not a big fan of Madsen, but....

I have the feeling that a bit of encouragement from us fans in his direction might well go a long way. I'm sure he knows he's not popular which can't be easy for him. So some crowd cheer and even a bit of a chant would boost his confidence. And confidence is vital to play this game.

He doesn't do enough off the ball for me but against a crap Wrexham side he did ok although still bottled at least one 50/50

I would have subbed him on about 50 mins when we were losing the midfield battle and allowing them back into it but we got away with it this week but against better teams we won't

2 assists is what the the non attending twitter virgins will crow about but anyone who actually watches him knows he needs to do more
