Part Time Jobs 11:34 - Sep 16 with 4181 views | LoftusR | Hi all, I am planning to stop full time work in the next couple of months and I'm looking for some ideas of what part time work may be available in and around central / north London. I have had a long and varied career in FMCG and Financial services supply chain up to director level. However I am not looking to continue that type of work and I'm looking for a complete gear shift. An example being working as a tour guide which is something I'm already looking in to. I am sure there are some interesting things out there that I'm just not aware of. Love to hear any suggestions that I can look into or even better if you know of any specific opportunities do let me know either below or DM.
Part Time Jobs on 15:45 - Sep 16 with 1629 views | charmr | Currently 63 and retiring had crossed my mind as well as how. UK pension won’t kick in until 67, US one available but not worth it yet. Biggest out goings Health insurance with extra bills and mortgage. Health insurance has saved my ass though. Medicaid available at 65 but who knows where that is going as well as health insurance changes under the cu re nt s regime. So treading water waiting for the tide to go out. Wife wants to move. UK and Ireland options but currently can’t get the numbers to add up. Very best to everyone x

Part Time Jobs on 14:43 - Sep 16 by DWQPR | Sold my financial services business last year at the age of 58 and then spent a year accompanying advisers to meet my old clients. Very humbling experience to say the least. Bought a house six months ago on the south coast near the Solent and have spent the summer doing the place up, new bathrooms, new flooring and a whole load of decorating. And not needed to live in it whilst the work has been done. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, accompanied by the radio and the odd tradesman and today is moving in day. Still some work to do but that’ll see me through the autumn. Pop into London for the R’s, a bit of Shakespeare and a few lunches with friends. Have I missed my career? Not one jot. Looking forward to hopefully a long, happy and healthy retirement. |
I live in that part of the world, been down here over 30 years now, pop up to see my mum in Wembley once a month and every time realise how much I don’t miss living up there. I’m nearly 65 and down to 3 days a week which is perfect for me. When I finally give up I’m seriously looking into volunteering at Fort Nelson on Portsdown Hill which is an old Napoleonic Fort now a military museum.

Part Time Jobs on 15:27 - Sep 16 by stowmarketrange | I retired from driving trucks 3 years ago next month, and I can honestly say that I haven’t had time to get bored yet. I have a small pension from Royal Mail to hopefully tide me over until March 2027,although being 65 today I was hoping to get it now,but times have changed. Who knows if I’ve saved enough to see out my days comfortably, but I do know I’ve worked enough. The only thing that concerns me is that the pension age is under review again, and they might raise it to higher than 66 1/2 for me. If you enjoy work then stay there, but if you don’t then retire.Good luck to you all. |
When raising the state pension age the government by law would have to give a minimum of 10 years notice to those who it would effect. So you’re ok.

Part Time Jobs on 14:15 - Sep 16 by Malintabuk | Great thread... but the other angle I'm 70 next month and still work full time.... in fact I average over 50 hours a week. No mortgage, no real money issues really, but it is the thought of... being non productive. Worked all my life... but the year long miners strike affected me. A young married man with 2 children... and no wage for a year.. it was frightening... just lucky my lass worked as a nurse, and my mum supported us as well . My lass as been retired now 3 years and keeps on at me too... but the thought of not having that "income" every week is daunting. Yes I have a small pension, savings etc, but it is the finality of it ... that's it, it's over type of thing. Nice to read so many positive takes on it.... |
I'm not your age but can't imagine not working. I'm producing some of my best and most interesting work right now. I work for myself and choose my work; done a day online with some people today and had a brilliant experience helping them navigate some really difficult challenges. They'll go back tomorrow with some brilliant ideas and approaches they've come up with and I get a day chatting with interesting people and paid c. £900 for it.

I thought that too but when I went on the gov.uk site to check my pension age it said March 2027,but that might change.
Part Time Jobs on 13:20 - Sep 17 with 841 views | loftboy | For the last ten years I’ve been delivering shopping, did 5 years in Berkshire and then London with Sainsbury’s and the last 5 with Asda in Lowestoft, took the plunge this year to go part time, just work Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Gives me chance to visit my kids more often in Yorkshire, I have also developed a penchant for short breaks, fly on a Wednesday and come back on Saturday.

Part Time Jobs on 13:56 - Sep 17 with 782 views | MancR | Left teaching at 53, that required more time and energy than I had or was willing to give. We had a narrowboat so have spent extended time on that while getting a bit of rent from our eldest and partner. Would’ve continued with that plan but the selfish gits wanted their own place. I now work some weekends selling pies at markets with a bit of messing about on the water. Money is a bit tighter but enjoy cutting our cloth rather than working ourselves into the ground. Getting a mortgage at 22 certainly helped with keeping costs down in our 50s | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Part Time Jobs on 14:00 - Sep 17 with 756 views | OldPedro | I was made redundant in June and am old enough to draw my works pension. Paid off mortgage, car etc and currently not working. My wife is still full time though, so my plan is to get a part-time job 2 or 3 days a week to supplement my pension and then my wife can go part time as well. I've had a relaxing and enjoyable summer watching lots of cricket - haven't missed work at all.

I've started looking at similar jobs to some of the ones other people have talked about - supermarket delivery, trade plate car driver etc. Have also been looking at some more general shelf-stacking type jobs. Not quite ready to apply for anything yet.

I'm not ready to retire yet, but did leave my higher paid job 5 years ago with a view to going part-time (though I have been full-time the last 18 months, and now going back part-time, so back in the same boat). Anyway, I re-trained as a gardener and became self-employed, did some volunteering in gardens to get experience, did some courses, got some clients and could select my hours (easier if you don't have the pressue of having to fill the whole week, and easier to reschedule etc). I'm not saying do this, but I wonder if there is something you have always wanted to do, or somewhere you have always wanted to work, where you could volunteer and or do some courses to retrain to get into them? Sometimes just doing a course, or volunteering, opens your eyes or people suggest other things, you make contacts etc. Or do you have a hobby you could turn into a job, or a skill you could teach people for money?

Have you considered exam invigilation. Won’t be for everyone and you need an enhanced DBS (aka CRB.) Most schools, in my experience, will have a contract with one of the high-street employment agencies. (Reed etc.) I won’t share my retirement story, as it will just make people jealous!
