Can someone please explain why the Lummox Frey has had his contract extended. Slow, barely fit, frequently injured, no good in the air, does not fit into our new pacy forward line, cannot last a whole game, not going to improve at the age of 31.

I quite like him as an option to be honest. As a main starter, of course not now that we have Burrell and Kone, but as a squad option he is solid

Yes, but apart from that?
Today's showing suggests he certainly isn't fit, let alone match-fit - so what exactly are we paying him for?

I don't think it was Frey's fault today. He appeared to be instructed to play deep, virtually midfield. He deffo was not being a number 9 today.

Yes, he looked cumbersome and ungainly but intricately linking-up play across the middle is not his forte - he needs to be up top bashing into CBs, scaring the GK and on-hand to poach things in the box.. all things he's good at.

Agreed. Bizarrely he played most of the second half in midfield and had Smyth playing as a loan striker for the last part of it. It all seemed a bit a strange when the game was there for the taking.

1st game back after a lengthy lay off, cut him some slack.

Nourry out

I can't think of anybody else suited to play in midfield than an unfit Frey. A bizarre decision.

Geez the guy has had no pre season, our best striker last year and top goal scorer, he is a big guy so it's going to take him longer to get match fit, great option as back up, as someone else said give him some slack.

Frey a victim of Madsen’s uptick in form it seems.

Not seen one second of the game but I’ll comment as a broad question from OP

He’ll chip in this season
I can see him getting half a dozen or more from the bench
Also think he is one who is good to have around the dressing room

If he’d scored an own goal and we’d lost then fair enough. We didn’t. It’s a point on the road and they all count and he helped us to it.
Winner v Oxford I reckon

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

This is a ridiculous thread. Frey is only just back. As Loftboy says, give the guy a break!

Never knowingly right.

Mixed emotions, because I don't think he should have been brought on and even less so, made to play in that deeper role, however, as others have said, firstly, that's not his fault and secondly, he's making his way back from a long layoff and just because unicorns are known for their quick and very powerful healing abilities, just because that would not appear to be the case with Freydemort doesn't mean you should hold it against him.

A good squad player, works hard, gives a shite and is a decent back up to KAB.

I've got the Power.

My question posed the other day is whether he will maintain a required level of performance as he ages, or if he'll decline markedly with time?

If I were to put money on it, I'd be surprised - and happily so - if he was proving useful in terms of availability and end product this time next year. Remember we also need him to play rotationally and not just occasional cameos off the bench.

Am another one firmly in the 'give the guy a chance' camp. We are going to need an alternative to Korea as a focal point when Kone picks up an injury or suspension, or needs a break in a 3-game week. Think our top scorer from a team which most agree didn't create enough last season, deserves the benefit of the doubt for now. As noted above, didn't have a proper pre-season, first game back and not playing his natural position. A second half out of position in a scrappy game does not a write-off make!

Also, know the contract extension raised eyebrows but given how bitter the club seemed about Cook's extension, I think Nourry (and Stéphane) must feel he is going to contribute. His experience, game-smarts and goal threat will all come in handy over the 40 odd games we have left! Let's give the guy some support as he comes back into the Frey

OP and a little of what has followed on this thread is a pretty blinkered and slightly juvenile view of a player who has hardly kicked a ball since April .
We would almost certainly have been relegated without his goals last season so let’s get off his back shall we .
He was poor yesterday but was played in a strange roll that he clearly didn’t feel comfortable in.
We all know his limitations , but most people can see that he is an important squad player.

We also saw yesterday that Kone isn’t always going to be the reincarnation of Les , so Frey is going to have to get to grips with that new role , but in doing so becomes integral to how we play along with Kone .
He may well start Wednesday , just through rotating the squad so get behind him .
