It seems many didn’t see the game , these are my observations from watching on sky,

I thought once again Fellows played well yet was strangely taken off at half time.

Wood is playing consistently well it’s going to be difficult to dislodge him if this continues. He’s grabbed his chance, fair play to him.

McCarthy made a couple of decent saves I prefer him to Bazunu but there’s not a lot in it imo.

Stewart was excellent all night and made a nuisance of himself ,first half two good headers on goal one a great save from keeper , second half two great finishes .

Casper Jander is looking a decent signing.

Quarshie got done for their goal but apart from that he looked good.

Their disallowed goal at the end was a correct decision imo, McCarthy was being held around the waist and fell to the ground. Well spotted by the ref in a crowded goalmouth. These decisions so often go against us.

Wilder needs to grow up red card fully deserved .

Saints fans good in numbers great turn out for Midweek on a Tuesday night

See you at Derby .

It was definitely a game of two half's. We were terrible in the first resorting to the loads of possession but going nowhere passing backwards and sideways Rusty ball. Second half we realised that in order to score you have to get the ball forward and were far more positive. Stewart was excellent as were others. Don’t know what Still said at half time but it clearly had some effect.
What impressed me was the way we battled when we were put under pressure. The players worked their socks off for that win and you could see what it meant to them and the manager at the end.

As for Wilder he has always been a nasty bit of work. Ref did well.

Agreed great numbers but why is our away support so quiet? Only heard them when we went 2-1 up for 10 minutes and then silence

Agree with most of this, our support was great, theirs was awful
Wood and Quarshie are a solid pairing and both did well
Fellows being played at RWB is stupidity he doesn’t know whether to stick and twist and isn’t a defender - play Jelert
The ref was awful, whistle happy stickler and got lots wrong

After a lot of chop and change, Will appears to have decided on a team. Stability will bring confidence as the players get used to one another and our defence at last looks as though it exists. If Stewart comes good (and it has been a long time coming,) then we have the makings of a side that won't be a constant embarrassment. Glad to see Slack Jack and Bazunu dropped. McCarthy saves two out of three. Bazunu one so there are games there we would otherwise lose. I would like to see Ramsdale back as I think he is good for goal difference.
Will Still is making slow but steady progress and there is finally some fight coming back into the team.

Fair enough I’m not looking to slag our fans off but I went to Watford away and that was quiet as well, whenever an away team is winning at st Mary’s the away end is rocking unless it’s Brentford who sit down in the standing bit.

Did not get to watch the game last night. But want to ask, being that many comments on here and other forums are suggesting we were slow again, bad in the first half again, are we actually making any real progress?

I mean, it almost sounds like a step backwards, performance wise from Saturday's game, no?

The points you raise are correct.

The first half lacked any urgency, with slow build-up, lots ofd sideways and back possession and created very little. This suited Sheffield, who were happy to create opportunities on break or from set pieces.

The second half was better for the first 20 mins and 2nd goal, but then we reverted to type, sitting deep and just inviting trouble.

I don't understand why we keep going back to 'Rusty Ball'. A lot of these players weren't around last season when Martin was here, so is it something they are being coached on ?

The first half reminded me of the Russell Martin days tbh too slow and not getting it forward quick enough but fair play to WS we were much more direct second half and we went for it .

WS explained his subs. Fellows kept cutting inside and he wanted to stretch the pitch and go over the top more which is what Fraser did. First half was poor but credit to the manager for changing things. We are nowhere near the finished product but after last season there is a glimmer of positivity. Agreeing on a settled starting 11 is a positive.

I think WS has finally cottoned on that both Flynn Downes & THB can't be arsed or are sulking because nobody wanted them in the Summer or neither are anywhere near fit enough... or a mixture of all the above. The longer he leaves them out of the starting line-up, the better. Both have been dogsh1t this season thus far.

Not everybody sings, and some of our fans just sing half heartedly. It's not "fiercely" loud I would agree. Even against Pompey, it wasn't ferocious enough. Too passive. If we get nearer the top of the table, and start winning more convincingly, maybe the passion and excitement coming from the stands will increase. At 2 -1, most of us can only see us f@cking it up, so people are nervous. Great numbers last night though.

You need to turn the volume up next time. TV sound engineers vary their levels. I remember one of the loudest crowds I've ever been in was at the 1976 FA Cup semi-final and you could barely hear it on TV as the sound engineers had reduced the sound of the crowd so viewers could hear the commentator.

A great night. Got back home at lunchtime today, after dropping Wints76 back off in Wints....

Good to catch up with Buggalugs and also Ericofarabia (who I had not met before) in the Head of Steam pre-match.

A real contrast of emotions last night. Doom and gloom was all around at half-time after the penalty, but the team did so well to get back into the game.

Fair play to McCarthy for his save from O'Hare at the start of the second-half. A massive turning point as it turned out.

We are only 4 points off the top 2. We need to go on a run of wins now and really go for it.

My biggest fear is that he brings Stephens back in and upsets the defence which is finally looking a bit more solid and ready to move the ball forward instead of back and sideways.
I sometimes wonder how long it took Swansea to shake off the Martin disease..Stephens being an ever present with Russball and all....

Got indoors just after 3 this morning.

The 1st half was nearly as bad as we have been, seemed to be very slow in moving the ball forward not helped at times by our lack of movement.

Not sure McCarthy was at fault for the goal as Nick suggested, I guess it’s one of the goals if you hate the keeper then it’s his fault , if it was another keeper then it wasn’t his fault.

The goal came about by giving the ball away in midfield ( Jander) then the CB ( Quarshie) getting done by the forward .

To our credit we got ourselves a penalty - is that Armstrong 1st miss from the spot for us?

To Stills credit ( or luck) the half time subs made us more attacking and Stewart’s 2 goal were both taken well - a true strikers instinct .

Still subs towards the end seemed to take away our attacking threat and invited Sheffield on to us.

Did really well to hold on in the end and as others have said the ref blew his whistle way before the disallowed goal was scored.
