In honour of the Madsen resurgence.

Paul Furlong springs to mind.

Sammy Lee was a bit wobbly, 'specially when he ran.

That's because he was short and round and bounced on the ground.

We found out later that Furs was playing injured when he first started playing for us and was carrying it for the first year. In addition, the rest of the team was not playing to his strengths and that took them time to catch on as well.

The Bard took time to adjust as he signed from Watford, where he played right midfield, so playing right back was new to him, and it took him some time to adjust defensively.

We'll see if Masden continues to improve. I hope he does, but I am not convinced.

We signed Bards from Oxford, actually.

I need a SAGA. What’s the SAGA? It’s ….. Queen’s Park Rangers.

I think Danny Graham would have been better in that team than Helguson. Scored 24 goals that season for a team that finished 14th (and scored more goals than we did).

Looking at the stats now you'd have to say it was our defence that won us the title as much as Adel and his heroics - six teams scored more but our goals conceded was the lowest by far (-10 over Swansea and an incredible 26 fewer than Norwich).

Is that down to teams not committing players forward due to the threat of Taarabt et al in our attack?

The grass is always greener.

Stats may prove me wrong but I recall Tony Sealy having a pretty ropey start to his time at QPR, but then recovering to be half decent and scoring a few goals for us.

Chants of 'Sealy must go' were not uncommon in his early days

We signed Barker in '88. Quite a few years before they came into money.

My memory plays me up these days.

I remember him as quite a stalwart of theirs and then suddenly they were looking down on players like him, I suppose I've put those things together.

Tony Sealy was a victim of the one substitute rule at the time, so he often missed pu of the team completely. If it was now he would get on the bench easy and would probbaly be the last 30 minutes guy

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

Agree with you about our miserly defence.

Not so sure about Graham. Although it is a great imponderable.

He did have a great season for Watford the year we went up but he never reached those levels again in his career.

Helguson's goals and hold up play were vital to our promotion and he continued to do the job the following season in the PL.

On balance I think I'm happy we stuck with HH.

Graham went on to have six seasons in the PL, although you'd probably say only the first was fruitful. Warnock wanted him and I think he was probably right although of course as you intimate, we will never know.

None of this is to take anything away from Helguson, who did a fantastic job for us.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Maybe. But it was a damn good defence that began in midfield.

Yeah, I think he counts.

Probably didn't help that he was signed from Blackburn just after they'd come into money (and were obviously getting rid of him to upgrade) but I think we expected him to be at least decent and he seemed quite mediocre.

Barker found it hard at the beginning as was shunted to right back early in his career here
I don’t think Francis really fancied him and it was only when Gentleman Don Howe took over did he start finding his feet

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Similar time to Helguson but I think Clint Hill had a slow start at LB but really came into his own when he moved to CB.

Shittu started poorly with a red card in his second game I think but bounced back pretty quickly.

Red card was on his debut during the thrashing away at Peterborough. Everyone around us thought he played well prior to his dismissal, about the only highlight of the night!

I remember Heidar's debut against Wolves as well. Aware of his legendary status at Watford we had high hopes but he fluffed change after chance. Left the game totally bemused.

Possibly the best debut I ever saw Darren Peacock away at Derby.

Barker was actually signed a few years before Jack Walker started flashing the cash. We signed him in 1988 and the Walker era got going when Kenny Dalglish was appointed in late 1991.

EDIT: Just seen W7's post

Wasn't Simon Barker signed for a record equalling £400,000? Vaguely remember him being announced on the 6 o'clock news with Michael Wale

IIRC Helguson was loaned out to Watford for his second season and no one was sorry to see him go.

Helguson did so well at Watford that they wanted to keep him at the end of the season and Neil Warnock was happy to let them have him provided Danny Graham came over to us.

A deal couldn't be done and the rest is history.

A real sliding doors moment.

I thought we were due to buy Danny Graham before our first season back in the Prem?

HH was the spearhead of our attack in the Championship winning season, I can only assume NW got him back because he likes to rack and stack his strikers!
