Players With Wobbly Starts on 09:19 - Oct 6 with 1639 views | bosh67 | Totally. I remember Furlong in a number of his early games some fans chanting 'you're not fit to wear the shirt'. It went on for some time but he soldiered on through it and then there was Oldham and then he was a football God. He still is. [Post edited 6 Oct 9:19]

| I need a SAGA. What’s the SAGA? It’s ….. Queen’s Park Rangers. |

Players With Wobbly Starts on 09:53 - Oct 6 with 1448 views | W7Ranger | Would SImon Barker come under this catagory? Probably not. I just remember that I never really rated him when I was a teenager (maybe cos there were so many "better" players around him most of the time). But it was only towards the end of his Rangers career (and I was a bit older/maturer!) that I realised he was actually a bloody good player for us. Chipped in with his fair share of goals (a few headers in there too!), and was a bloody good servant for the club. Honorable mentions for superb his goals v Sheff Weds (A), Everton (H) and Liverpool (H).

Yeah, I think he counts. Probably didn't help that he was signed from Blackburn just after they'd come into money (and were obviously getting rid of him to upgrade) but I think we expected him to be at least decent and he seemed quite mediocre.

Both of those are good calls, especially Bardsley who got pelters in his early days.

I think he'd scored quite a few goals for Blackburn before joining us so when he didn't get as many for us people weren't impressed. I also think he was seen as being a bit "soft" by many. Used to get called Mavis due to a resemblance to Les Dennis.

I don't think Stan fits into this category, see below: September 16, 1972 Stan Bowles made his debut at home to (pre-Brian Clough's) Nottingham Forest, September 16, 1972, a weeks after signing from Carlisle for a club-record 110,000 pounds. :) Bowles, wearing from that very first game, HIS #10 shirt. Within an hour, he had made the first goal for Don Givens...and scored the second...as Gordon Jago's QPR won 3-0 (Andy McCulloch getting the third). And QPR, of course, went on to promotion.

Yeah, I was definitely hoping for someone chipping in a decent few goals from midfield, which was a bit of a weakness in what was otherwise a great side. His finest hour was that cup game against Liverpool, and in that you can see the player we hoped we were getting. I have a soft spot for him but really he didn't turn in that level of performance as often as he should have done. [Post edited 6 Oct 12:19]

IIRC Helguson was loaned out to Watford for his second season and no one was sorry to see him go. Helguson did so well at Watford that they wanted to keep him at the end of the season and Neil Warnock was happy to let them have him provided Danny Graham came over to us. A deal couldn't be done and the rest is history. A real sliding doors moment. [Post edited 6 Oct 13:23]

Think you are right about Clint, Colin sent him out on loan early season if I remember right then recalled him.

To be fair Bob had a very wobbly start followed by a very slow career here.

That was when we were in the top flight in year 2, Clint was the mainstay left back for the title winning season. Danny Shittu got sent off on his debut in a 4-1 trouncing at Peterborough, definitely got better after that.
Players With Wobbly Starts on 13:24 - Oct 6 with 608 views | LazyFan | We found out later that Furs was playing injured when he first started playing for us and was carrying it for the first year. In addition, the rest of the team was not playing to his strengths and that took them time to catch on as well. The Bard took time to adjust as he signed from Watford, where he played right midfield, so playing right back was new to him, and it took him some time to adjust defensively. We'll see if Masden continues to improve. I hope he does, but I am not convinced.

I think Danny Graham would have been better in that team than Helguson. Scored 24 goals that season for a team that finished 14th (and scored more goals than we did). Looking at the stats now you'd have to say it was our defence that won us the title as much as Adel and his heroics - six teams scored more but our goals conceded was the lowest by far (-10 over Swansea and an incredible 26 fewer than Norwich).

Agree with you about our miserly defence. Not so sure about Graham. Although it is a great imponderable. He did have a great season for Watford the year we went up but he never reached those levels again in his career. Helguson's goals and hold up play were vital to our promotion and he continued to do the job the following season in the PL. On balance I think I'm happy we stuck with HH.

And yet that back line of Gorkss, Connolly Clint Hill and Bradley Orr (after Christmas) was ditched as soon as we got promotion. It’s possible that Neil made a mistake in doing that.

We signed Barker in '88. Quite a few years before they came into money.
Players With Wobbly Starts on 14:40 - Oct 6 with 407 views | daveB | Furlong and Helguson are good examples although when both were getting stick it was reasonably justified, they were far better players than they were showing for us. Furlong was woeful at times and the you're not fit to wear the shirt stuiff was after a dreadful penalty miss against Vauxhall Motors then something seemed to click and he never looked back.
