Not good enough today, and not likely to be good enough this season. I would sell Varane in January, while Madsen for me, small renaissance notwithstanding, is a squad player at best.

Discuss.

Poll: What do you expect from the Charlton game?

Varane is prone to the odd game where it looks like he’s never played 11-a-side football.

He is being selected ahead of Field & Hayden because neither Field or Hayden have been playing well.....hence Varane is selected and he is, perhaps, the future.

As we both know Gazza the message board is all about opinions and we disagree, Varane has been pushed to the front because of his age as we are a club now who has to develop and sell, we were offered a decent fee for Varane in the Summer and turned it down, that is possibly because if he plays regularly the CEO is hoping we will get more money for him.

Field and Hayden have hardly been selected to say they have been playing poorly, they are both as good as Varane in a defensive midfield role.

Quite a successful fishing expedition so far.

For me, totally farcical statement that’s being “asked”
Madsen continues to make me eat my words. Nowhere near his best game today but I saw him running around and using his body against Miwarl players….. I mean, did you notice Luongo at all before he went off? First 25 we totally dominated them.

Varanne will be a great player.
Poor game today granted. My only criticism of him is he doesn’t shoot on site enough and I do wish our players would have more pops at goal around the box.

Funny how that duo was good enough to get us to sixth but after one narrow, frustrating and (IMHO) unjust defeat they need canning. Okay, they ain’t Viera and Petit, but they’ll do for me and I’m Chairman of The Sam Field Appreciation Club

Bites!!!

I’m just not seeing it with Varane to be honest. Dispossessed regularly, plays the ball backwards just as much as Field does and doesn’t contribute much going forward.

Madsen does a least get his head up and look to progress the ball forward. Varane does have potential, but has not started the season in the way I had hoped. Surprised Hayden didn’t start yesterday, his experience and nous against a belligerent Millwall side would have been ideal.

Having said that, I don’t think he was the main issue yesterday. The inclusion of Frey was clearly used as an attempt to counter their strength and height at the back, but we slung crosss after cross in and won nothing in the air.

Still, it was a smash and grab by Millwall and they executed their game plan to perfection. We move on with two very winnable games coming up.

Stephans’ “efficiency” now replacing Warburtons’ “clinical” as the buzzword for failing to score when on top.

What did you think of RND's defending for the first goal????

He left it for Cook and Nardi to sort. Cook assumed Nardi was coming for it, but the ball dropped on the edge of the box so Nardi hesitated, allowing the striker to take control.

RND should have done better with the second goal to be fair.

Two soft goals, which continues to be our undoing in games that we control.

Last season Madsen was prone to every game looking like he’d never played any football, look at him now. Varane was very poor yesterday, in a game we needed our midfield at its best - they weren’t.
Our defensive line, which was very good at Brizzle, were a let down.

We showed a lot of promise though. Shame. Run is over. Let’s get it going again Wednesday.

Agree with most of that except, Varane is in ability, and when he is on his game, a much better footballer than Field or Hayden. Yesterday he was poor and JS might have put Field or Hayden on for him, if we hadn't been 2-0 down at HT and needing more attacking options.

The following is not in reply to your post:

Hayden probably couldn't have started yesterday, as he played a full game for Jamaica that finished at about three in the morning gmt on Wednesday, and he probably arrived back on Thursday morning. He may not have travelled first either, as they don't usually have it on those flights.

I did think it might have been a game for Sam Field, yesterday, a better tackler and heading option, against a physical opponent. Similar thinking to JS with Frey but that didn't go very well. I think Kolli would have been a better option. Good in the air and obviously quicker for through balls.

Fair play FB. Wasn’t aware that Hayden had played for Jamaica mid week.

Baffles me is how much these average midfielders cost. Just think how many great midfielders have we seen in the hoops and compare of late. Who’s running the show out there on the pitch?

Maybe more players need to rise through the pyramid and learn their craft rather then get sucked up by academy’s.

I thought Varane had a poor game yesterday, he has this slightly annoying trick of switching backwards on the ball and he got caught out a couple of times yesterday doing it. This tendancy to switch back slows our progression forward. Generally thought Madsen was OK yesterday he is a forward looking player. Thought overall we didn't have enough in the central midfield position and allowed Millwall's no.8, along with Smallbone far too much time and space to set things up across the middle of the park. I would like to see Hayden get a start in place of Varane for Swansea to see how he performs with Madsen.

Varane desperately poor yesterday, on his top game still better than Field and Hayden. Thought Madsen was good first half, always available and now becoming more physical, he did dip a little in the second half but still not a bad performance from him,

Madsen is the only centre midfielder we have who can unlock defences as the others are in reality “worker bees”

Not sure what happened with the first goal, looks like Cook was waiting for Nardy to come and get it, he should only of left it if Nardy had called, if he didn’t call I would put that on Cook.

We have 2 more than capable replacements for Varane in Hayden and Field. Time to use them. And time for Varane to fight to show he deserves his spot back. But for now, on Wednesday, he has to be dropped.

"I mean, did you notice Luongo at all before he went off? "

I noticed when he took the ball off Varane after eight minutes, progressed it to Smallbone who nearly scored. So, yes.

I agree - was clearly off the pace for most of the game perhaps understand why Hayden was not called upon after his international duty but Field has not become a bad player overnight and would have been much stronger in the second half.

I never lie but I don't always tell the truth

Varane is till so inconsistent. Not just from game to game but within games. Will do something good then the very next thing is to either pass the ball to the opposition or get caught in 2 minds and get tackled. We just need a bit of consistency in there. Hayden or Field in with Madsen. Madsen will make up for Hayden or Field's lack of progressing the ball but at least they are consistent. I wouldn't mind seeing Hayden and Madsen together. Hayden will bring stability and consistency during the game and allow Madsen to progress the ball more

Really like Varane. Think he’s got loads of potential and when he’s on it, we are a different side. Today was a day when we needed him to step up and he didn’t. And we lost. He needs a break from the first team.

Varane just had a break; the international one. That, perhaps, was part of the problem as he looked miles off it against Millwall.

If, however, you're suggesting that Varane needs to be dropped then it's ok to say so. I wouldn't be averse to Hayden getting a run in the DM position as he was solid there during his loan spell.

Eh? How many defences has Madsen 'unlocked' this season, as in providing direct assists leading to goals? As for our midfielders - Poku, Dembele, Chair etc. 'worker bees'? Right!

Alluding to Field and Hayden, should of said central midfielders

Nice to see the return of these threads after a six game break.

On the first day (of the three game week), God created a perfect pitch — flat, lush, and beautiful.
On the second day, He made Loftus Road — tall, majestic, and just begging to be full.
On the third day, supporters and atmosphere flowed, the stadium glistening under the sun.
By the fourth day (C mid 1970)s, he made world class players and all the creatures that would dominate football.
On the fifth day, he created Venables 2.0 - the manager
By the sixth day, He looked at all His work and said, “It’s good... but it needs something. Something... that truly levels the playing field for others.”
So, on the seventh day, He went to France, spent a week perfecting wine, cheese, and the art of creating threads like this" every time something went wrong.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?
