Thanks for that Clive.

I'm kind of with you that we could have won that game as sure as we could have lost others.

I do wonder, though, if the game showed that our squad strength is not as deep as thought.

It is strong in certain areas (we have a spare ten or two) but weak in critical areas like .. all of the defence basically

Brilliant, brilliant analogy.

Good stuff. Got to say though, whilst their fella left RND and Cook standing, you ask whether Nardi should be expected to come out and head it, well yes he should. The ball was up there for what seemed like an eternity, the defenders were left for dead, you just run at the bloody thing. The scorer was a waif, he’d have likely stopped in his tracks before any potential collision. Hands, feet, head, he can work that out when he gets there.

Been a good run but the last two home games have seen us regress a little to too many passes and one touch too many. Our goal was made and scored with single touches, JS has to get them back into that mindset.

Brilliant Clive, thanks. Agree with everything and a superb read as always.

Said to my mate at half time that those two words "reality" and "check" were homing relentlessly into view. Seen it so many times before.

Cook's really in that zone now where every mistake highlights his age and lack of pace; I still fancy him to handle it and still be an important part of the defence in his last season. You can see why, however, the Edwards pursuit might actually have been a lot more than just a crowd-pleasing move.

Pretty much as I saw the game . Our propensity to give teams goals rather than make them work for them is still there . Cut that out and we win the game .
Burrell changed the game and he’s pace is really going to be a huge asset for us going forward this season . Dare I say it but he could be an even better signing than Kone .
Another week we win this game as can be said for the Bristol game which we could have lost .
Championship football !

Thanks Clive. Great report as ever. A small thing but you wrote that Vale was "...inverting inside and checking back onto his unfavoured left foot". However, Vale is left footed, though that makes his crosses and corners even worse.

Correct. But as we all know, and as I’m sure Cooper et al will tell you, if they could pick a place for us to cross from, it would be back inside, narrow and from deeper, gently inswinging onto their foreheads! It’s the easiest cross to deal with as a centre half because you can attack the ball and head it back where it’s come from. Crosses from the byline are so much harder as the attacker can attack it, and you’re partly facing your own goal trying to deal with it.

When you invert your wingers, temptation will always be there to take the easy option and cut inside and cross from there, even though it’s easy for the defence to deal with.

To be fair to Smyth, he tried to offer something on the outside and get to the byline, but he was then cross with his weaker foot and the execution wasn’t great.

All this isn’t to say you can never score from an inswinger from deep, but the ball needs to be perfect…and rarely is.

There are obvious benefits of playing left footers on the right and vice versa but I would like it changed during the game, depending on how successful it was going. On Saturday it was not too good. As you say, I think they both, especially Smyth tries to hit the line and cross.

I thought Smyth was our best player first half but then resorted to throwing himself on the floor second half.

It was in midfield where we lost the game, I thought Madsen and Varane both had poor games, to their credit neither of them gave up and kept going but were miles off the levels they have shown in recent weeks.

For Me i'd have started Kolli up front, as said in the report and pretty sure we all agree that Frey and Kone just doesn't work especially against those 2 centre halves

Thanks Clive - Spot on as usual a tight game which we certainly deserved at least a point from. But fair play to Millwall they managed and defended well second half.

I can see why he started Frey to rough up the Millwall backline and then bring the subs on to change the game second half. I get it I have seen teams like Millwall bully our fancy 10"s and frustrate them in many previous games. For 30 minutes the game plan was working (apart from our final pass) but then got done by a sucker punch and a poor goal just before half time.

As we were now chasing the game I am surprised he didn't make the changes at half time but he must of had his reasons.

Anyway onto the next one - For me the club continues to move in the right direction and we have a much better squad now than 12 months ago.

Agree with the subdued atmosphere due to the 12.30pm kick off - Probably suited Millwall more than us.

Cheers Clive.

We rarely beat Millwall these days. And we rarely beat Alex Neil teams. So not really a surprising result.

Onto the next one.

Great report. Just a little shout out for Massimo Luongo. Really hope that isn't as bad as it looked. Another player who suffered the 'he's terrible/he's great' thing here but a class player and always gave everything when he put the hoops on. Wish him a speedy recovery, as I am sure do the fans here.

Never knowingly right.

Gazza - completely agree with you and why we don’t do this more often when we have the personnel on the pitch that can do it, somewhat puzzles me.

We have done it before but it’s more to provide better cover for defenders - I.e. when we get overloaded.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Great analysis of the game, just as how I saw it. Thought Millwall were a very organised, composed side and as said stand a fair chance of making play offs this season. We are an improved team, but still prone to defensive lapses that lead to goals. Interesting to see how Stephan mixes it up for the next couple of away games and hopefully focuses on pace up front.

The Hoops Down Under groups got together across Aus. What a disappointment in the end. Kickoff was 930pm in Brisbane. The group unanimously agreed Frey was a headless chicken. But positively we should have been up 2 nil at halftime.

Excellent report Clive and it’s almost uncanny the way it coincides with how me and my brother felt about the game, including the below par performances of Varane and Vale but especially the decision to repeat the double battering ram formation up front after it had failed so abysmally in the Oxford game. We looked at each other when we saw the line up on the tube on the way to the ground and couldn’t believe he’d done it again.
Despite that I thought we were very good for the first thirty-five minutes until they scored, dominating the game and playing in their half unlike so many home games I’ve seen in recent years, when we’ve looked like the away side as the opposition have pinned us back.
But after all that possession you always knew it was likely to come back and bite us on the backside if we didn’t score. At the ground I was furious with Nardi but having seen the replays think the defenders were more at fault. And that save from Smallbone was like watching Donnaruma in action for PSG.
In the end all we could say to each other on the way back was serves us right for being so optimistic and thinking we were going to win. Never has “it’s the hope that kills you” seemed more apposite to me.

Great report and nothing to really argue with.

The big difference at both ends? Pace. It killed us and if JS sends Frey out again then questions should be asked.

We are very close to be a very good team though.

Pace is the answer. We lacked it at the back. We lacked it at the front.
There should be no place for Frey (especially) or Cook.
Frey would be better employed as one of the dray horses that lumber round Wandsworth delivering Youngs beer. (Do they still have them?)
Whoever thought it would be a great idea to extend his contract needs to have their brains examined. As should anybody who picks him again to start a game.

Sadly the Wandsworth dreys are no more. I thought Frey was ok actually for the most part. He set up Smyth in the first minute. But I think the Kone/Burrell duo should start most games.

It was the most 5-6/10 performance we'll see all season. They had a better plan, had the pace up front and deserved to win unfortunately, we were so lightweight in midfield and its those games where we need a leader in there to dictate how we play. Was very surprised to see Frey and Kone start again, but I think its because JS wants to get Frey some minutes but couldn't bring himself to leave Kone out. I'd be amazed if he does it again. Just a frustrating afternoon for everyone.

Great report Clive and pretty much as I saw it too.

Apart from actually witnessing the first goal live I’ve just watched it back a couple of times now.
The more I look at it the more I don’t blame Nardi .

If that guy is through on his own then yes I would expect him to come and engage but with 2 defenders there , he should never be charging out of his box .
Watching it back , I can’t believe the nonchalance of RND and Cook. Barely jogging . It looks like they are expecting Nardi to come but realistically it’s their job to deal with that . Cook especially looks almost peculiar in his attempt at barely more than walking football in that instance and RND isn’t much better . Even Morrison isn’t really busting a gut…and if he had he would have stopped the follow up .
Marking RND was difficult . Overall he was exceptional in that first half in particular . Several upgrades on Paal, but was in part at fault for both their goals .
He was my man of the match but he was found wanting in both instances .

Overall , I’ve read a lot about how good we were in games like Bristol City away , when actually for an hour I thought we were very ordinary and lucky not to be at least 2 goals down . Even at the end City missed an absolute sitter to equalise.
Stoke missed a number of chances including the easiest header of the season and there has been others in that run of games where we could easily have dropped more points .
I actually thought we played well in that first half and 2-0 was incredibly harsh …but that’s the championship in a nutshell .
Win some lose some and no drama going forward .
We will lose games .

Important now we don’t do what we usually do and go on a bad run.
Swansea will almost certainly have more possession and that will suit us .

No more Frey / Kone nonsense as Clive said .
Play the best team and do what we do best and that is counter back to front quickly .
We did that less Saturday and it showed .

Work in progress = Inconsistency.

Until the WIP nears the finished article, we will remain frustratingly inconsistent and continue to lose games that we are more than capable of winning.

The teams that make the top six are the ones that remain more consistent throughout the season than the rest.

We are not one of them……yet.

I had RND as star man as well. The way he reads the game and steps onto the play with interceptions is so far ahead of Paal. But his part in both goals I'm afraid knocked him down considerably.
