Is the issue also that both him and Madsen seem to both play their best in the same position.

Starting to wonder if that's why he struggled last season as Field was playing in his best position and why he's done better so far this term.

Just a thought.

Our highest finish in this stint of the Championship was 11th when he ran the midfield.

He was good enough then. Short memories indeed.

This is exactly why I said as the team gets faster. All the players who are technically poor, not just Field, have struggled.

I don't care about when we came 11th, we finished 11th because Field was one of our better players. He isn't anymore which is why he has played only one game since Coventry. And he was dire in that.

Bring him on (for Madsen) to shut up shop and protect a lead. Nobody better than him for that role.

Progressive play is not his bag, as he simply doesn’t bring enough to the party if we need a goal, although Varane isn’t pulling up any trees either.

Field offers a goal threat from set pieces, something neither Verane, Hayden or Madsen do.

Everyone was dire at Coventry. We didn’t lose at Coventry because Sam Field wasn’t fast enough.

We move on from players, fine, but we are far from safe and far from a position that we can dismiss the Sam Fields of the world in such a disrespectful way.

It's more the rhetoric rather than the reasoning for me Bri.

Indeed.

I come back to it:

22/23; Players’ & Fans Player of the Year - won both (won “young” player of the year too)
23/24: Fans’ Player of the Year - Runner up
24/25: Players’ Player of the Year - Runner up

Short memories for some.

If we think Sam Field is the problem, we’re asking the wrong question.

And looking to next year’s squad (as the leadership should), Cook will be gone. Varane hopefully sold for >£5m. Dunne, who knows? Who are your reliable, proven Champ experienced pros? We’ll need Field. The grass is rarely greener. And horses for courses will always be relevant.

I think he'll play a lot this season and he'll end up one of our best players again.

A lot will depend on the composition of midfield. I'm not sure it'll be Madsen and Varane for the season.

And, yes, I could see him getting time at centre-back. I don't think we're as well stocked there as maybe others do.

I'm just disappointed that this thread isn't titled 'The Sam Field Conundrum'! Or have you patented that term?

I’m betting he plays this evening. Probably starts too.

Had you has an early look at the teamsheet?
Field in. At LB? No RND.

Completely agree.

I posted on here about 18 months ago that would Marti have to make a Decision on Sam Field if we wanted to step up to the next level of clubs in the championship .
I think it’s a fair question still . There was a debate then as now , but as far as I can remember it remained respectful.

But the wording and the disrespect shown to a great servant and ‘player of the year’ in recent times is the problem for me . Be critical but also come on!
“Finished at QPR and rightly so” isn’t really an observation , it’s just a bit nasty really .

Unsurprisingly no saw 'play him at LB' coming.

Dont play him at left back. Rather Vale play there if RND is injured or rested.

Smells like a trout farm in here

Well that was quite a nice answer wasn’t it?
Sam, having been completely bombed out and slagged off do you fancy doing a turn at left back in the pouring rain at Swansea on a Wednesday night?
And, guess what? He does. And he was great at it.
Park your disrespect.

Jeez, he was shite tonight. Granted playing out of position, but still shite!

Wtf? Really? Did they have a single decent attack down his flank? All their attacks and balls in came from their left, our right. Did his job.

He was fine. Ludicrous to say he was “absolutely shite”. Just comes across like you have a predetermined opinion that you’ll stick to regardless of what actually happens.

Disagree.
What did you make of Varane’s sitter to finish the game?

I think we are very well stocked at cb if everyone is fit, but that "if" is doing a tremendous amount of lifting in that sentence

Not really much of an opinion or one worth much respect if you can’t offer any reasons “why” other than just repeating “he was shite”.

That's harsh Ham, proper harsh........whilst I do not think that he was outstanding tonight I thought he did a good job defensively overall at LB - cannot recall the wide player going round him once tbh, kept his position supported us going forward reasonably well, won some big tackles/blocks. Played his part in a good win. A good 6 I would say!!!
