A cheeky backheel stop for the on running Kone to smash home would have been liquid football.

Oh ya, and passed to Kone for the other shot he took on. But what a joy to watch. Conducted the game with ease and intelligence.

Great to have Chair back but yeah Madsen absolutely dominates now. Kind of what we hoped for from a 6 foot 4 playmaker. Awesome performance.

Madsen was terrific. And I thought he was hopeless…just shows, you sometimes have to delve into things a bit more. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Like most of us, I have no inside knowledge, but, a big part of Julien Stephan's reputation is his ability to improve the game of individual players. Has he worked out how to get the best out of Madsen?

Actually thought it was more a good save seeing it on the highlights. I thought Chair should have gone across the keeper but actually he didn't have as much time to adjust. As for Varane, he definitely should have hit the target!

| Chair for No.10 on 09:00 - Oct 23 with 2001 views | DWQPR | Now that Chair has players around him that will cause the opposition concern like Burrell, Kone, Saito and Poku it will mean that unlike previous seasons when the options were limited to the likes of Dykes, Frey and to a certain extent Smyth it should mean that he has more space to play as opponents may not be able to afford two players on him like we had seen far to often limiting his ability. If he keeps fit then I can see him and Madsen really starting to dictate games which can only be a good thing. In addition to this the change that he had, which was only half a keepers foot away from being a goal was the type of play that we haven’t seen since Di Canio was manager. A great little pass from Dembele through the defence picked up by a late run by Chair, all but undefendable. | |

| Chair for No.10 on 09:17 - Oct 23 with 1918 views | Burnleyhoop | Chair was class last night and always has been. The game was incredibly frustrating for long periods, largely due to several players inability to trap a ball, play simple passes and make the right decision. Chair made it look effortless and along with this strange metamorphosed Madsen fella, will bring some much needed nous and control to our play. Welcome back Ilias. | | | |

| Chair for No.10 on 09:49 - Oct 23 with 1735 views | WadR | Agree with all posts in this thread. Also think it's worth mentioning how quickly he moved the ball last night. Most of his touches were first time passes. Only really one moment where he had a head down, mazy dribble - and I think he was just trying to find the half yard to get a shot away. Great to have him back. Excited to see how he plays with the best array of attacking options since the Eze/Bright season. | | | |
| Chair for No.10 on 09:52 - Oct 23 with 1711 views | BazzaInTheLoft | What timing for an insurgence. A win on Saturday will probably take us into the playoff positions again, and Chair defo the sort of player that wins games on his own. Things coming together nicely on the pitch. Not felt this optimistic in years. | | | |

Hope this is a real improvement we'll see more of (coming from the coaching staff?), will make a big difference to how we play.

Technically he's definitely improved: how he goes in for a tackle or up for a header just looks a better body shape. He'd improved towards the end of last season but really noticed the technical changes this season. Also I notice he looks arouhd him to see his options and how much time he has just as the ball is coming to him - something the better players do.

Exactly what we needed against Millwall on Saturday. I've got a feeling teams will come to HQ and sit deep to deny space behind, so Chair is exactly what we need playing off Kone to unlock stubborn defenses. He and Madsen combined really well several times yesterday. Amazing what a little movement and technical ability can do when playing football. And to think some on here were questioning Chairs place in the team.

| Chair for No.10 on 10:11 - Oct 23 with 1568 views | Hunterhoop | Chair was absolutely superb last night. Looked really sharp. Made runs all over the pitch, and played some great early passes (both out wide, and crosses, one of which Kone should eventually scored from). You obviously want to get him into the side. All I’d caution is we need to be careful where. I’m a big believer in systems/shape > best 11 footballers. It should be the best player for each position on the pitch. Our system, a slight variation on 442, is working. A big part of this is the Burrell/Kone partnership. Kone goes short for the ball to feet, back to goal, we hit him early with balls to feet/chest, which he lays off back to Madsen or round the corner for one of the wide players. Burrell plays on the shoulder of last man, making runs for the ball in behind or channel runs to provide an out ball for the team. His pace keeps the defence a little deeper than it would otherwise be, which creates more space for Kone to go short and for Madsen to operate in. Burrell is playing really well and key to how we play. Chair is not a natural replacement for either of those players or positions (given how we play). I could see him working with Burrell and possibly separately with Kone, but it will require the rest of the team to change how we play. The out ball down the channel won’t be on as much if Burrell isn’t there. We’d need to try to work it to Chair’s feet in the hole, rather than up to Kone going short back to goal, as they’ll be no one beyond him. It’s not impossible, and having a Plan B is great, but I wouldn’t be keen to change a system that is working (yet). Personally, I’d start Chair wide right. I know it’s not a position he has played much, but he’s right footed, and his delivery from wide with his right foot delivering away swingers in between keeper and back 4 should be meat and drink to Kone. His dribbling and passing is better than Smyth’s so he might be better at slipping in Burrell. Whilst he’s not as good defensively as Smyth, he’s miles better than Dembele, so Dunne will still get protection. And playing him on the right allows you to get Saito into the team too. This approach also has the added bonus or actually getting your best players into the side. It’ll be a new role for Chair, but he came on for Smyth last night and got to the byline on the right twice and whipped one superb ball across, so the green shoots of that are there. | | | |

I think the whole picture and formation changes again when Chair, Poku and (if) JCS are fit. You build a system for the players you have - we haven't had them and Sephan cleverly devised a system to fit what we had. But Poku is potentially such an upgrade on Smyth, and so much more direct than Dembele (who really is a 10) that a three of Saito, Chair and Poku behind *either* Kone or Burrell will be clearly the best line-up. Might take until the new year to get there, but that's why the heaviest investment was in Poku, Saito and Kone: so they can play together in the game model. 442 has been nicely pragmatic. But the worst thing would be to now become dogmatic about it. JCS returning would also open up the left side as a a left-footed CB who can progress the ball at feet or with a pass. Something massively lacking these last games in particular. Should he return, it'll be hugely transformative as well. It's massively exciting that it still seems to me that we are in a kind of preseason era of sorting things out, bedding in, yet we're wining games. If we don't suffer too many injuries, post Christmas this could be a very exciting team. But I bet we evolve out of 442 soon.
| Chair for No.10 on 10:57 - Oct 23 with 1321 views | BrianMcCarthy | Good posts, Hunter and TK1. Kind of gets to something I've been thinking about - "what's next?" Last night we played four centre-backs, two holding midfielders, got very little creatively from Smyth, very little creatively from Kone. Very few passages of creativity overall. I like Hayden bursting forward, and one of those runs provided the assist for the goal. But overall we were again reliant on an over-the-top ball for Burrell's pace or a long-throw that isn't long which our oppo always cop and we mostly don't. The question of whether we'll evolve or not is a valid one, I think. If we were going to change it up, then surely we'd have done it in the two weeks training allowed by the International Break? | |
