Cheers Bristol!

We’ve both mentioned Spike Milligan’s war memoirs. I’m a bookshop mug when I read “ the funniest” etc on the sleeve because they rarely are, but it’s too late as it’s in my bag. I think my favourite may be A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. He killed himself because initially people didn’t get his work and when they did it was a bit on the late side.

Another Milligan vote.

"Adolf Hitler: My Part in his Downfall".

Incredible, incredible talent.

Martin Amis - Money
Philip Roth - Portnoy’s Complaint
Any of George Macdonald Fraser’s Flashman books.

Portnoy’s Complaint shades it.

Only time I ever took a book with me when I was on the Underground, and the only time I ever laughed uncontrollably...thank you Spike Milligan.

Poll: Thank God The Seaons Over.

Definitely going back to this one, Brian. Must remember: don’t lend books to people, especially good ones.

Mate, that is my favourite book too! Heartbreaking that he didn't get to see its success.

Trying to remember as there have been books that have made me laugh out loud but I don't think any of them are recent reads. Tom Sharpe - I read those a long time ago. The Flashman series of course and that was a long time ago as well. Maybe, from memory, the most recent was The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared.

I started to read Tom Sharpe in the early nineties so I reckon it’s about time to revisit them. Recently bought Bob Mortimer’s first novel, The Satsuma Complex. If it is as funny as the man himself then I’ll more than enjoy it.

I too have read Milligan's Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall and Puckoon, but way, way back when and loved them.

I've tried to think of other humorous books I've read and can't think of that many. Bill Bryson's Notes from a Small Island is amusing, as are the other books of his I've read.

There's an old paperback still on my bookshelf from years back called The Book of Heroic Failures by Stephen Pile. That was entertaining.

However, I listened to my first audiobook a month or so ago and that really was laugh out loud funny. Thatcher Stole my Trousers by Alexei Sayle, and read by the man himself. Great stuff.

Yes I read them way back - in the late 70s/early 80s possibly - and wonder if they've stood the test of time as your sense of humour changes.

Puckoon by Milligan. It’s a work of genius.

I think Danny Baker's first volume of his memoirs, 'Going To Sea In A Sieve' had some genuine laugh out loud moments.

Talking of Irish writers, I think Flann O'Brien's 'The Third Policeman' is a work of sublime comic genius. An utterly astounding novel.

Maybe not the funniest but I’m surprised that The Ginger Man (J P Donleavy) hasn’t had a mention mention. If you haven’t read you’ve got a treat in store.

Good call on Woody Allen.

Would add Sue Townsend for Adrian Mole books and The Queen and I.

Also...to really posh it up...Candide by Voltaire. Very funny. No really. Maybe Monsieur Stephan read it at school?

All the 'Mr Gum' books by Andy Stanton had me, at one point or another, crying with laughter whilst reading them to my kids.

The Profanisaurus is never out of my reach. My all time favourite definition isn't even rude! 'Monkey bath'.Genius.
