I think it's fair to say comedy is quite subjective

One mans genius is another mans blood pressure raising cock womble

That made me chuckle.

Agreed, though.

I made a huge error recently. I love Sara Pascoe's stand-up comedy. I think she's clever, she's edgy and she cracks me up. Her show 'Lads, Lads, Lads' is one of the funniest I've seen in years.

So I bought two tickets to her new show for my Sister and her Hubby. Huge mistake. Gigantic. Not their thing at all, which I should have guessed, apparently she bombed (I had to ask them, they were being polite and saying that she was 'fine'), and - worst of all - she made no allowances for the audience on her Irish tour, relying on English cultural references that went over the heads of the crowds here. Lazy. I think I'd still have enjoyed it, but I'd have been in the minority.

Yep. Very true.

Few people raving about Mike Reid, so thought I'd watch a bit of it. After five minutes of a poof joke, black guy joke, prostitute joke, another prostitute joke, limp knob gag, I decided he probably wasn't for me.

Humour definitely not universal.

What do you think of Aisling Bea Brian? Not always funny but love the Jonathan Ross episode with her and John Malkovich who is in tears of laughter by the end.

I like story tellers best. Dave Allen, Peter Cook (but not Derek and Clive, sorry), Henning Weghn and Lee Mack all brilliant. Also love David Mitchell on Would I Lie to You.

With you on Mike Reid, Nix. Watched a few of his shows on a coaches on away trips years ago. Not my thing at all.

I only know Aisling Bea from QI. I found her slightly annoying at first as she was trying too hard, like a kid in first year who thinks they have to fill every gap in the conversation, but after a few appearances she started to relax and she was clearly very funny, and warm. Will look up the Jonathan Ross episode, thanks.

Love Cook, Allen Mack and Mitchell as well. Don't know enough about Weghn but will check him out.

She did a lovely semi serious / semi comedy series about a woman recovering from mental illness that was really sweet Brian:

As per my earlier post, I reckon Taylor Tomlinson is one of the best in the business at the moment. Some of her crowd work in her earlier small venue shows is incredible, and her facial expressions and body language really sell her jokes. She's got a couple of full length netflix shows and loads of YouTube clips to check out

For some strange unknown reason Michael Mcintyre makes me feel uneasy.

Am not convinced the smile and the face and the family friend go together

Another one that many like but in many ways he is very contrived, is Jimmy Carr.

Seen him live - the laugh is straight out of drama school - not real..
But the consistent use of the C word - no not Chelsea - in a live show - its overdone, unnecessary and doesn't add to the humour - more the opposite.

Ruby Wax love what she has done, raising the profile for mental health but her actual comedy, brash and brassy Americanisms - not for me !!!

Best one though and the most intelligent by a country mile is...

Bob Monkhouse

Extremely clever man.

Speaking of which, not seen a mention for the brilliance that was Caroline Ahern.

I’d have been all over this a few years ago, but now I think they’re not good or bad, you just like them or you don’t. For instance, Sharon Horgan. To me, her writing is grindingly obvious and stereotypical, her characters are cliched heroes, villains and buffoons, though all of them seem to whine about nothing serious. But all the women I know adore her. Where I hate the straight-to-camera “Am I right girls, am I right?”, they all shout, “finally, someone says it”. She’s the multi-millionaire, not me.

It’s very easy for you or I to mock a one-hit wonder, but that’s one more than we’ve managed between us. I thought Sarah Millican was quite funny when she first emerged, she had some original routines on some apparently everyday topics. But writing jokes is hard, and it’s easier to pay someone to write new jokes in the style of your old jokes and try to survive on brand recognition than admit you’re not up to it any more. No one is forcing you to watch them, do something else.

I loved Bad Sisters. But, the characters were a bit too stereotypical.

I watched QPR beat Arsenal in the Premier league, i then went to meet my ex girlfriend Hammersmith appolo in very high spirits. I had bought her some tickets to see sarah milligan, as my ex claimed she was a very funny and witty stand up comedian... "spolier alert she isnt" because I walked out at the end of the evening feeling like QPR had just been beaten 9-0,woefully unfunny, boring and predictable by far the worst stand up I have seen to date.

But by far the worst is Rosie Jones absolutely no doubt about it,they put her on the big fat quiz of the year. a show i normally really enjoy and i had to switch it off within minutes. What is even more cringey is watching her co-stars over compensating while laughing at her jokes in a way to get the live audience to laugh along.

I think you've summed up the difference between the modern comedians who make their name on TV and develop a following, so when they go out on tour they are basically delivering that act.

Old school comedians who made their living touring the country understood that there were regional variations in audiences and they needed to get the feel of the audience before they launched into their routine.

Not that any of those skills helped in the famous graveyard for English comedians that was the Glasgow Empire:

The great Max Miller refused to play the place saying:

"Listen, I'm a comic, not a missionary."

Can anybody explain Elis & John to me? I listen to Radio 5 so stumble across their show and absolutely nothing they say even raises a smirk even though they are smugly chortling along to what each other says in a "jokey" voice.

Me. At least according to one reviewer.

I did a 20 minute stint at the Edinburgh festival back in the day. I thought I'd gone down great, and eagerly scoured the press the following day to see my name in print and what a comedy genius I was etc.

Someone wrote the following

'Johann would have made me laugh more if he'd hanged himself on stage.'

Crushed.

Some people just have ‘funny bones’ like Eric Morecambe for example. Bill Bailey another one.

If funny is the schtick can you be funny all the time. Turning it on and off. Lots of comedians not so prolific when older. Hard maybe to be funny if life has given you a kick in the bollox maybe.

Gallows humour definitely one of my goes to.

Amazed he’s still selling out arenas doing the same set though.

So, my partner brought me some tickets to watch Rosie Jones in Blackheath....

Now I'll be honest I'd struggled with her comedy because I've only ever seen her on tired panel shows that don't really work for slow deliveries.

Being a wokey snowflake I went along anyway and found her actually hilarious. Her timing and subject matter were superb.

Can recommend, even to the Darrens*. Sad to see she was abused on a train recently.

Stewart Lee has been consistently brilliant for years. Few appearances on TV so his stage act is always surprising and extremely inventive. Special mention to Paul Chowdhry - delivered a show at the Apollo 'Whats Happening White People' which was a divisive comedy tour de force
