To win or not to win, Rotherham cup game. 09:08 - Jan 4 with 43443 viewscyprusmel

That is the question, should we try to win and risk a backlog of fixtures and a possible derailment of our promotion campaign or play a weakened side and exit to concentrate on the remaining league fixtures.

Echo the earlier point re putting back Millwall till after AFCON. Some of the fringe players will be desperate to impress, especially Thomas for whom I constantly predict great things but so far always wrongly. If loan returners don’t play they are obviously likely to go out again. First goal for Kelman....and Thomas of course. You heard it here first!

thinking this myself, a cup run and maybe get injuries, tired, suspensions or points on the board to consolidate the p/off spot ? long season 46 games, afcon/covid will affect squads across the league.
if they did the 4th rd draw ahead of the game, maybe i;d think different if we had a big game or derby match, right now i'd go for league position.

Go for the win.

If we concentrated on the league every year, we'd have a terrible FA Cup record...oh, wait...

We've got first team squad players who actually need games at the moment: Archer, Field, Ball, Wallace, Thomas, Gray and Odubajo if he's recovered.

Warburton said in his post match interview that some players needed to get back into the rhythm of playing games. I expect him to put out a pretty strong stating 11.

I agree we should play all these and Masterson and Kelman. It's a Catch-22 match. We all want a win but a defeat wouldn't be the end of the world but we definitely don't want a draw!

Perhaps a touch arrogant to assume that is our choice to make.

A chance to win a cup round, bring it on, love the FA cup, we have the small advantage of a home draw against a side that are showing well this season, so good chance their not just bunch of cloggers from a lower division,

Will not be easy, start with our strongest side, use your fringe players as subs, aim to put the game to bed early, then you have the chance to bring on the fringe players, this will not be easy, and they will no doubt show us respect and play tightly

I am confident that there will no need for a replay as the match goes to extra time and pens if it's a draw.

Agree. The players having that long 3 week break admittedly Covid effected to some degree, didn't help us that 1st match after against Bournemouth. A 2 week gap is perhaps too long as well. I think we should put out our strongest team excepting the older and more muscle pull likely players, Wallace for example. And if we can get into a decent lead then rest the first teamers.

That's what I'd do too.

Our players haven't been overloaded over Christmas and some of them may need that extra game to be fully match fit, but would rest Albert and Lee for this one as they're so vital to us in the league.

Also agree that it was really annoying that we played Bournemouth first. I think we'd be much better against them now.

I dont agree , due to Covid an intense Christmas schedule and injury returnees our players are knackered
A chance to grab an extra week off , avoiding a serious injury ( which we have incurred in the past at this stage) and tick off an AFCON week with a depleted squad for me is a no brainer .
The way our club is being run now promotion could get the new ground back on track.,keep hold of our young stars and help to secure our future .IMO we would nuts to risk that for the chance to play Burnley reserves or similar .

Fookin’ hard to win the Championship and the FA Cup double, if you get knocked out of the third round.

Certainly players I’d rest of course, and other players need game time.

Speaking of which: What’s happened to SDM? I assume he’s injured as he’s not been on the bench of late and I like the cut of his gib.

Bit of a cliche but I think we should start Dykes and Gray. If either of them could get a couple of goals and run up a bit of form that would be beneficial for our league form. I would also like to see them both start consecutive games, especially Gray, who I think hasn't got going yet because of inconsistent playing time, but has still managed to score some good goals. If we could get either him or Dykes scoring consistently in the second half of the season it could be massive for us.

SDM has been playing for the 23s including yesterday's 0-5 defeat v Borough. I think he needs a loan out to get more experience of first team football.

How many subs can be used in FA Cup games? The league cup was 5 subs/3 occasions. If this then it makes team selection a lot easier

5 substitutions can be made, so some Premier League teams will field 16 subs during the course of the match.

I'm torn between playing a strongish team to build up fitness and playing a second string team as the league is our priority and we can't take too many risks during AFCON.

Suffering since 1978.
