Cricket 2025 County/International Thread 13:39 - Apr 9 with 46810 views | Superhoops2808 | With the football season coming to a close in a months time, some here will turn their attention to the smell of freshly mown grass and long days sat in the hot sunny weather watching the great game of cricket. As a member of Kent Cricket Club, I got to enjoy my first match of the season against Somerset at Canterbury over the last few days. Unfortunately, as is always the way starting the season this early, the first day was lost to rain. In fact nearly all the games were affected by rain, some without a ball even being bowled. But I did manage to get to see 2 centurions at Canterbury yesterday and a very enjoyable day of cricket (even if I did get sun burned head - Yes I know should have taken a cap). Did anyone else get to see cricket over the last few days? I know we have several Middlesex supporters who no doubt enjoyed the 'runfest' at Lords (over 1300 runs I believe) [Post edited 4 Apr 13:14]

Cricket 2025 County/International Thread on 21:43 - May 6 by Superhoops2808 | I should know that, but really didnt so every day is a school day I went to Lords on Friday Gorgeous day but I never expected to nearly go to the last over after leaving the ground that day Almost 12k watching on Youtube on Monday evening - Far from dead and buried the red ball game |
Well said. The red ball game is far from dead, in spite of the negative narrative spun by some and the bookending of most of the season in the months of April/May and September! So at the height of summer, in August, when there's no school, college, university and parents have more free time, there's no first-class cricket played. Meaning that the grounds of teams like Essex, Kent, Worcestershire, Somerset etc, are in some instances only in operation for just two days in that month, with next to no revenue being generated. There were a number of very close contests in the last round of games. Most notably, Middlesex v Kent. Great character shown by Somerset against Essex after being 70-odd for 5. Some Essex fans are blaming the team for not winning, not me. They've reckoned without James Rew who is a special talent and will be playing for England in the near future. He's already scored 10 first-class centuries at just 21 years of age. Serious talent. [Post edited 8 May 9:40]

He might be playing for England very soon as he’s been called into the squad as replacement for the unfortunate Jordan Cox. Completely agree on your point about August. It is a disgrace and the ECB should hang their heads. The One Day Cup usually runs that month whilst The Hundred nonsense is going on. But that is often at outgrounds and is somewhere between 1st and 2nd XI cricket anyway now. In itself that is also a disgrace, turning what was a famous, popular, well supported competition into a sideshow. The final isn’t even at Lord’s anymore and is in late September. In fact, only one domestic final takes place at Lord’s…The Hundred.
Cricket 2025 County/International Thread on 15:19 - May 29 with 599 views | TheChef | England going OK so far today, 221-4. But still getting out to silly shots, as ever in white ball I feel a collapse is not far away... Also don't know if it's just me but I don't find this team very likeable these days. Apart from Root, Wood and Stokes I can't really warm to any of them.

That's funny Ie Men that have achieved massively throught their careers and at the latter days of their careers too and won a world title too. We have many exciting white ball cricketers including Buttler and Root but also batsmen in Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, Harry Brook, Will Jacks, Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell all have real talent and continued longevity for a period of time hopefully. Still for me, the more all rounders like Sam Curran, Gus Atkinson, an Overton or two and other bowlers such as Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer when fit. There is a lot of white ball talent. Think your comment is perhaps based on familiarity with players that have been on the scene for many years. Bairstow, Roy, Malan, Hales, Jordan, Ali, Rashid, Wood, Woakes all are or becoming yesterday's men. Didn't really collapse, did they ??? Only 400 for 8. I think because white ball cricket is so dominated by the batsmen today, most international squads bat down to number eleven and they have more skills than previous generations myself. As we speak Windies 102 for 8 !!! [Post edited 29 May 19:13]

Well yeah was a fairly easy win in the end. I think it's just young professional athletes these days - they don't seem to have much personality and there's a sheen of arrogance which I suppose they need these days to succeed. I just feel with Bazball that arrogance is pronounced and I don't think the players are quite as good as they think they are.

We seem to do ok when it all goes right, but struggle if things go against us as we don’t seem to have a plan b if plan an isn’t working. I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing plan a work at the Oval on Tuesday.

Agree - McCullum needs to earn his money with this one day team. You can't just continue with the "go harder" mantra any more as it hasn't worked for a while. I thought it was a promising innings yesterday, even with the weak opposition - we actually didn't slog at every ball and overs 30-40 we played quite sensibly.

Hmmm I dunno I still felt a little too much slogging and the individual scores suggested batsmen getting in and getting out (other than Bethell, maybe). I think I'm just tired of the Bazball mantra and while it's nice to play entertaining cricket all the time, I'd rather than just win more!

I just looked at the met office forecast for Tuesday at the Oval and it’s only a 50% chance of rain between 3pm and 6.So hopefully we’ll see a decent game.I’m in block 20 with my Ipswich son-in-law and my chelshite mate.Hopefully we won’t have to talk football.

Okay. I’m in Block 27 (Galadari Lower) with 3 Chelscum and one Manure supporting mates!
