With the football season coming to a close in a months time, some here will turn their attention to the smell of freshly mown grass and long days sat in the hot sunny weather watching the great game of cricket.
As a member of Kent Cricket Club, I got to enjoy my first match of the season against Somerset at Canterbury over the last few days. Unfortunately, as is always the way starting the season this early, the first day was lost to rain. In fact nearly all the games were affected by rain, some without a ball even being bowled.
But I did manage to get to see 2 centurions at Canterbury yesterday and a very enjoyable day of cricket (even if I did get sun burned head - Yes I know should have taken a cap).
Did anyone else get to see cricket over the last few days? I know we have several Middlesex supporters who no doubt enjoyed the 'runfest' at Lords (over 1300 runs I believe)

Could see Josh Tongue playing a part, with 90mph+ speeds, if he can stay injury free and contribute this summer. They seem keen on a battery of proper quicks and he's the only one hitting those speeds aside from the injured pair of Wood and Jof.

What's Wood's injury now?
Re Archer it's criminal how he's been mishandled by the England management.

Ligament damage in his left knee after the Champions Trophy mess. He was clearly in pain and continued trying to bowl on it, which was bloody stupid. Scheduled to return some time in July but don't think he'll be rushed back for the India tests.
Jof getting injured again playing franchise cricket is typical. Might see him build up his fitness for Sussex and playing test cricket again this summer, but he's signed up to the Big Bash League in full again - no idea how he manages that alongside The Ashes.
On another note, Stokes was back bowling again against the Windies recently and he looked sharp. Will be a big boost to have him back as a proper all rounder.

How has Archer been mishandled? Aside from bowling him into the ground in that Test to cause the long-standing elbow injury, I reckon they've treated him with absolute kid gloves in a way that has not been afforded to many other players? Contracts, support...everything. Inevitably, not sure that will be rewarded as he is bound to be not as good as he was.

Well yes, they broke him and he's never been the same since!
Personally can't see Archer playing test cricket again. The fact that he has already committed to play in the Bish, bosh, bash league, if bought by a franchise, is telling in itself.
I don't blame him going down the T20 route, as I don't think his body can withstand the rigours of 4-day/test cricket any more.

That was a tremendous game this afternoon. I don't have any stats to back what I'm about to say, but DBD and Muyeye must have the best average for an opening T20 partnership. I would say that they are the best to date this campaign and I seem to recall that they both scored well as a partnership in 2023.
With Gloucestershire and Essex as your next two games, you have to fancy your chances of winning both of those and cementing your place in the top 4 at the end of the first phase of T20 games. Thought Evison bowled very well along with Klaassen.
Was Joe Denley injured? You've got a decent T20 squad there.

Deebs and Muyeye make a very good opening partnership in T20, although normally its T who kicks on and Deebs supports so good to see a mix up
Denly Snr believed to have a groin strain which is a real shame as he is (even at the age of 39) made for T20 with his bowling capability too.
Denly Jnr replaced him but didn't start. I would be more than happy to go into the CC games off the back of another 2 wins as we really need a boost in that at the moment.
Evison was billed as a replacement for Darren Stevens (irreplaceable in my book) but he is giving it a damn good go.
As me Saturday morning how I think we will do in the competition as a whole, but I am hopeful we may have something to shout about.

Regarding Archer, for me if we take him to Australia that's the Ashes lost. He will not make a whole series because of injuries, and personally I don't think he's great in test cricket
Our batting is good enough to take the Aussies on but as mentioned already getting 20 wickets will be the issue I think

I saw a decent match between Surrey and Sussex on a barmy evening at The Oval yesterday. Stand outs for Surrey were Sykes with the bat and an enjoyable spell from the kiwi bowler Santner. Fun player to watch and took the game away from Sussex at the end. Sussex gave it a go but were quite poor in the field I felt, compared to Surrey who took some great catches and didn’t give much away. Only Clark and Lamb caused any real problems to Surrey with the bat.
Fun fact. Sussex finished the match with Lamb and Currie at the crease. Lamb Curry!

I on the other hand, watched a pile of tripe at Canterbury last night.
Talk about chalk and cheese after the weekend v Somerset. In this thread I compared the similarity's between QPR and Kent over injuries, well Kent are also just like QPR when it comes to playing a side that cannot buy a win... They hand it to them on a plate!!
So any Essex supporters here can look forward to a win on Friday

Now you're jesting.
Cox may be back for us (Essex) but as I have said before, there's just a general malaise at the club which I can't pinpoint. Players and fans alike just seem to be accepting their lot.
So far that has manifested itself in no wins in the T20 and the solitary, but fortunate, victory against Worcestershire in the championship.

Well in El Crapico last night it came down to the last ball and Middlesex beat Essex by one run!
Surrey will absolutely destroy us tonight.
Watched the end of it, thought Helm was superb - beautiful slower ball. Looking forward to tonight at the best cricket ground in London - sold out, lovely stuff. Think it will be a good game, Surrey have been brilliant in their last 2, in all 3 facets but they have been losing the toss, put in and setting targets. A chase might make it a different story, expecting high scores too. Watching the test atm against India, England bowling attack looks very weak.

How did Essex manage to throw that simple run chase away
Unbelievable
Truly abject. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. At one stage, we only required 56 runs off 51 balls with 8 wickets in hand.
This side is awful and it appears to be a closed shop, where players remain in the side in spite of poor performances. I would have brought in a player like Westley, not flavour, but I liken him to Dickson at Somerset batting at 5 or 6, who fulfils a specific role very effectively. A pivotal role that was crucial in Somerset winning the semi-final and final, against Essex, in 2023.
If we had him there yesterday in that game situation, I suspect he would have navigated it a lot better than an out of sorts Critchley and the three youngsters: Allison, Thain and Benkenstein.
Onto defeat number 7 against Kent tonight.

Had a day's work cancelled on me, so I thought I'd watch the cricket today.
First time in years, and I'd forgotten how much I love the experience of cricket on TV.
It would be nicer if England’s attack was a bit better.
This is very much a second string attack against a good team.
Atkinson, Wood and Archer would be first string.
I personally would have played Cook over Woakes because the latter hasn’t had much cricket. And I am not a fan of Tongue. He’s not a Test standard bowler. Jamie Overton would have been better if you want raw pace. Maybe even Josh Hull as him being a left armer would have brought variation. They could have picked Payne on that left arm angle.
Potts would have been a better call too, albeit not quick.
