Cricket 2025 County/International Thread 13:39 - Apr 9 with 56696 views | Superhoops2808 | With the football season coming to a close in a months time, some here will turn their attention to the smell of freshly mown grass and long days sat in the hot sunny weather watching the great game of cricket. As a member of Kent Cricket Club, I got to enjoy my first match of the season against Somerset at Canterbury over the last few days. Unfortunately, as is always the way starting the season this early, the first day was lost to rain. In fact nearly all the games were affected by rain, some without a ball even being bowled. But I did manage to get to see 2 centurions at Canterbury yesterday and a very enjoyable day of cricket (even if I did get sun burned head - Yes I know should have taken a cap). Did anyone else get to see cricket over the last few days? I know we have several Middlesex supporters who no doubt enjoyed the 'runfest' at Lords (over 1300 runs I believe) [Post edited 4 Apr 13:14]

Cricket 2025 County/International Thread on 14:58 - Jun 20 by Hunterhoop | It would be nicer if England’s attack was a bit better. This is very much a second string attack against a good team. Atkinson, Wood and Archer would be first string. I personally would have played Cook over Woakes because the latter hasn’t had much cricket. And I am not a fan of Tongue. He’s not a Test standard bowler. Jamie Overton would have been better if you want raw pace. Maybe even Josh Hull as him being a left armer would have brought variation. They could have picked Payne on that left arm angle. Potts would have been a better call too, albeit not quick. Very much missing Broad and Andersen. |
Anderson and Broad are peerless. We are now seeing just how good they both were. There is a dearth of medium/quick bowling talent. There is nothing in the county circuit that stands out as potential talent, let alone ready to play for England now and adequately fill the shoes of the aforementioned. Sad state of affairs. In my view, the next best is Mark Wood. However, injuries aside, he's now 35 years old. India are currently cruising as our quicker bowlers are all going for more than 4 runs an over. That was extremely rare when those two were bowling, expecially at home. [Post edited 20 Jun 16:18]

Isn't Overton injured? Or is that his brother? In any case, too many injuries to key bowlers. Does the England set up also have key staff working part time in Dubai? Anyway India batting very nicely, proper Test Match batting, even if the track/bowling is not posing too many tough questions. Reckon they'll get 450 odd. Let's see if England can also bat sensibly. Not getting my hopes up.

Cricket 2025 County/International Thread on 11:51 - Jun 20 by Loyalitat | Truly abject. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. At one stage, we only required 56 runs off 51 balls with 8 wickets in hand. This side is awful and it appears to be a closed shop, where players remain in the side in spite of poor performances. I would have brought in a player like Westley, not flavour, but I liken him to Dickson at Somerset batting at 5 or 6, who fulfils a specific role very effectively. A pivotal role that was crucial in Somerset winning the semi-final and final, against Essex, in 2023. If we had him there yesterday in that game situation, I suspect he would have navigated it a lot better than an out of sorts Critchley and the three youngsters: Allison, Thain and Benkenstein. Onto defeat number 7 against Kent tonight. [Post edited 20 Jun 12:24]

I'm suspecting you didnt enjoy that last night, although as a neutral it was an almost perfect performance from Kent So pleased for Muyeye, he is a serious talent. And the often much criticised Matty Parkinson taking a five for. A great all-round performance and topped off with handbags between Cox and Billings which I think Bilbo enjoyed a whole lot more Think Harmers pyrotechnics at the end was making a point to his team mates at the end

Neither Carse nor Tongue had played red ball cricket before at Headingley. The slope take a lot of getting used to hence the number of no balls. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yes, wasn't the best innings ever, but Ollie Pope showing some guts, but he needs to be much more consistent in his batting. A good day for England

Agree, it was as close to perfection as it gets in terms of Kent's T20 performance at the ECG on Friday. I didn't see the Bilbo/Cox spat, but well done Bilbo. Some of the remarks, none too complimentary, made by Cox before and after leaving Kent went way beyond the pale. It's only a matter of time before I suspect he starts to conduct himself in the same distasteful manner at Essex, before ending up at Surrey. Good to see Parkinson bowling well. A real spinner, rarity in T20, playing his part in your campaign. [Post edited 22 Jun 19:53]

It has been a long time since someone had the aura he has around him. Really good article by Steven Finn on BBC Sport arguing he is the most complete fast bowler of all time - those comparisons are impossible to make but he's the best I have seen.

Only 20 quid a ticket apparently? Inevitably we're going to go for it but we'll probably come unstuck. Although I think the weather forecast today is also a bit iffy so that may come into play too. No shame in getting a draw. Oh but that's not saving Test cricket is it?

Yep - £40 yesterday, £20 today. 2 days' Test cricket for £60 is a proper deal.

It would make a lot of sense for England to do what they can to avoid going one down here if, as previously stated, Bumrah is only going to play in maybe three of the five matches.

That's what p1sses me off about this England team, great to watch does not necessarily equal winning every time. Just wish we could be more pragmatic. "Oh shame we lost, but we still had a lot of fun and entertained the crowd". That's not going to win you an Ashes series.

Yeah, the sensible, strategic play is to bat for the draw and make sure you don’t lose. However, that will disappoint the crowd and England have some bizarre ego about it. So expect them to be positive and go after it (after seeing off Bumrah), however if it looks dicey it would be brainless not to shore things up and play for the draw.

I genuinely don't think it is an ego thing. I reckon McCullum got it right having looked at our batting over the last 30-40 years and thought it leaves us exposed, especially in Australia and elsewhere away from home. Poking about at 2 an over until you get a good one....or be positive and get going. The best mentality is the old drivel about dropping a batter because of a "poor shot" in test cricket. Pietersen hits a reverse for 6 = incredible, great play, same shot caught on the boundary = egotistical moron, not the ticket, must be dropped. Although, of course, KP is an egotistical moron, but that is beside the point. We won the brilliant 2005 Ashes because our batting was relentlessly positive, threw the Aussies completely. For once. I'm looking forward to seeing us actually give it a go with the blade in Oz. I am just concerned the bowling won't live up to it.
