Players that left the club and it hurt as a fan 21:54 - Apr 17 with 7868 viewssdm1508

Saw this on a podcast and got me wondering.
Name a player that when they left the club it hurt. This could either be because you loved them as a player or the way they went about it to get out of the club

For me it was Les. Just because I hadn't seen a player like that at the club and I grew up watching him. With him, we stood a chance and when he went you kinda knew it was over

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned the great Dave Thomas.

I was only 10 when he left for Everton. I was on holiday in Ireland, and I was absolutely gutted.

Edit: Clive Wilson, quite rightly so, getting a few mentions. As a pair, him and David Bardsley were the best pair of full backs we’ve had in my time. They were very very good.

Another one here for Dave Thomas. The club soon realised their mistake and tried replacing him with Leighton James but in order to do that they had to swap Don Masson. DT then went on that season to create half of Bob Latchford's 30 goals, or so it seemed whenever Everton were shown on The Big Match.

I was also gutted when Dave Needham was sold to Forest.

Managers - Terry Venables obviously as he could have done great things with that team.
Dave Sexton as well. I think he could have rebuilt the team in the late 70s.

Phil Parkes by a country mile, no one else comes close for me.

I got the impression that he didn’t want or ask to leave

Strong and stable my arse.

Rodney I cried and ripped his Poster from my wall, but then Stan replaced him in my heart. But later on, it was a manager not a player. When Terry Venables left to become El Tel at Barcelona I was shattered. Thought we had the best manager in the world for many seasons to come.

Gerry off to Spurs and break up of that early/mid 90’s side that coincided with my time living over there. Still hurts now…

Agree. 19yo loving the mid 90s and then Gerry went. Never the same again. 😪

Another one for Dave Thomas. Absolutely sickened. He was my hero, even above Stan at the time. I remember my Mom buying me an Everton schoolbag because she didn't understand that I couldn't follow Thomas to his new club.

In later years, Eze leaving really sunk me, even that we all knew it was coming. It just rammed home how we'd slipped as a club. Losing our best player. To Crystal poxy Palace.

Dave Thomas for me too. I used to play on the wing and roll down my socks just because of him.

Was on holiday at my grandad's caravan in Pagham when I saw the newspaper. Left me absolutely gutted. I never imagined he would leave the hoops. Became one of those bitter 'growing up' moments.

As an adult, the way we let Macca go was scandalous. Absolutely the wrong thing to do for a guy who had been so good for us and to us. Mammoth defender at the highest level. I hope we do something to put it right with his family (if we haven't already) because he was truly top class.

Lee Cook, when he went to Fulham.

I know we needed the money, but it was so heartening to watch a player of that quality playing in the hallowed hoops.

His ball control and dribbling were astonishing and his crossing pinpoint.

I thought he would make it at the highest level but injury sadly put paid to that. I feel really bad for him about that, it must have been very hard to take.

He needs to be mentioned more. Such a stand-out player in that team.

Such a shame about his injuries.

Gave his signing-on fee to the club to help it in desperate times. Top player and good guy.

Of course Les the one, completely irreplaceable. I was 16 and gutted.

Also when we sold Richard Langley to frigging Cardiff who'd beaten us in the playoff final. He was absolutely flying at that point too. A terrible move for him as it turned out.

But Baadiff also signed Chris Willock on a bargain free and he can’t even get in a team in the relegation spot. Karma.

Martin Allen - was a Rangers boy who gave everything for us and who could score some belters
Sold to West Ham where became a cult hero

Terry Fenwick- pure class and was a major reason why the sweeper system worked so well under Jim smith in 87 , I think I was around my nans house when I saw the papers and he signed for Spurs
Gutted never covered half of it, imo it was step down him going there and so it came to be as his career went downhill after that

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Old enough to have seen every good team we've had from the mid-70s onwards broken up, so relatively steeled to it.

I do remember when we sold Allen and Goddard in the same summer it was a crushing blow. The emergence of 'two of our own' had put a spring in our step after relegation, and fuelled the belief that we'd be back up soon enough. This seemed like throwing in the towel. Poor Dean Neal never stood a chance.

This was then exacerbated by Venables leaving as manager after he'd resurrected us from the above-mentioned low. Cup Final / promotion / European qualification back to back. Phenomenal. And we all thought he'd stay for years. At least it was Barcelona not another English club. But of all the 'what if?' moments in my 50 odd years of support, 'what if Venners had stayed?' is probably the one I idly think about the most.

New one from me, Andy Sinton. He was my first proper favourite player, I was on holiday in Wales and it came on the radio that he had gone. I was distraught. I’ll never forget it! Honourable mentions to Sinclair, Austin, Les & oddly Dichio!

Plenty of players and managers to single out just one, but I was on my way to renew my season ticket when I read in the Evening standard that Sinton was being sold. I got off the train at the next stop and got a train back home.

The sale of Ferdinand was a huge blow but the money the club got should have been used to strengthen the squad but it was squandered on useless players like Hateley, Zelic and Somner. It lead to relegation and the club has never really recovered as we were an established top half team in the early days of the Premier League.

The Sinclair sale was daylight robbery.

Selling Parkes left us with Derek Richardson in goal and we almost got relegated that season (went down the following season instead).

I was also bitterly disappointed when Wegerle was sold to pay for the 'San Siro' staircases.

Good shout - Darren Peacock - (i) because he was excellent and (ii) we all knew deep down that it was the end of that era. We had finally shown selling everything was all we cared about.

I think selling Peacock led to a sit in protest on the pitch against Leeds Utd (we lost 0-4 iirc).

SWP and all the other wasters that left with bulging bank accounts that they did sod all to earn. So many worthy players we could have bought with that money.

Absolutely gutted when Venables left. I saw an interview a few years ago when he said that he had asked Jim Gregory for a pay rise to reflect his achievements and told him that Barcelona were interested in him, but the Chairman thought he was bluffing.

Venables said he reluctantly left because Gregory was too tight to give him a reasonable pay rise.

I also often think what might have been if he had stayed and what trophies QPR could have won. He was our Brian Clough.

Simon Stainrod - epitomised Rangers of that era, such swagger. And all over a silly row with Mullers on a plane from memory. Bumped into him years later and he said being at Rangers were definitely the highlight of his career

Darren Peacock. Selling him really pissed me off. There was no need to offload him at the time. We weren’t in dire straits and if we’d waited a while we could have got a lot more for him. Always thought it was a bit dodgy, seemed to have been under cover of darkness.

Strong and stable my arse.

Has to be Sir Les. His goals were irreplaceable and I knew instantly we were going to struggle without him. That fear was compounded when I saw Hateley hobble on to the pitch on crutches.

Sir Les. It was the beginning of the end of us as a top flight club. And the crap we got as a replacement was the start of and decade of us bringing in crappy over-the-hill mercenaries looking for a last pay check and getting worse and worse with every sh*t signing.

Other really painful ones were the offseason when we sold Allen and Goddard. They were two wonderful players and both were QPR through and through

Who can forget the bitterness when Charlie Austin went to Southampton for a pint of lager and a bag of crips and then sat on their bench and watched his career collapse?

Surprised how many say Les.

For me he stayed a season or two longer than he might have and his departure was fairly inevitable.

The heartache was how we squandered the proceeds and everything that flowed from that. Previously we had a real talent (which we probably only appreciate in retrospect now we know how hard it is) to pick up great replacements, but that came to an end with Les.

Suspect a lot of our choices reflect our age. When Stainrod left I was a teenager and that’s the age to have idols. As you get older you realise having heroes is a fool’s game, plus football no longer matters quite as much
