Do you think we will ever again be able to hold our own against the best like we have done in the past?
The gap between the championship and premier league looks to be getting wider. I know Nottingham Forest have been excellent since they went back up but looking at other teams like Southampton it looks massive.
Can we ever catch up to Brentford and Fulham in the near future? Can't believe Im typing that after the grief I used to give to their fans in the 90's.
What do you think needs to change to get us moving forward?
Or like a Luton fan I know he's happier to stay in the lower leagues. Is there anyone that subscribes to that? |  | | |  |

I remember my old man telling me the game had gone when Birmingham sold Francis for a million. Now we are at the stage where Chelsea are paying Man U 10 million not to keep a player they dont want. We would never be able to compete in my life time…..and I’m only 5! [Post edited 4 Jun 10:17]

Well, if Brentford, Bournemouth, Fulham, Palace etc can do it, then so can we but it does need the perfect blend of everything... players, management, owners, club structure, etc etc.
However, it would just be year on year hoping to finish around mid table with maybe the odd occasion knocking on the door of the LDV Vans Trophy of Europe.
There's no chance a club like ours could realistically get top 6. Those days are long gone. |  | | |

Agree with Juzzie totally as it stands.
My only hope, although perhaps forlorn, is that the Champions league morphing into a super league by the back door, plus the Saudi intervention, may possibly spread the talent pool so far and wide that the elite clubs slowly lose their dominant hold on all the trophies.
Palace should be our motivation. It takes patience and years but to win a cup final, maybe do well in the Europa, could open a channel to the top table. |  | | |

Promotion means success, so much jumping for joy.
Then.
The rest Is up to the Individual and whether they can go through the obvious
impending good hidings, as an example our first away game last time was at WHL and we were so far not up to speed It was embarrassing. But did It matter? well of course It did on a personal note I hated being In the Premiership.
In the near future we can't catch up to either Brentford or Fulham, It pains me to say but they are both well run clubs, one with a newish ground and one with a new stand, I actually watched some Brentford highlights a while ago and tbh I was pretty shocked at just how good they were.
We've been left behind floundering and faffing around but that's all the bad I'm saying about our club.
Hip-hip hooray for Fulham and Brentford, we are all we've got but there Is far too much slating of our club at the moment on here by posters, yes we're shit but we've been shit since 1958.
We're In the Championship again and I'm okay with that.

I agree with this.
Sooner they fcuk off to their World Super league the better for me.
Once they pull the ladder up the rest of us left behind need to be strong and totally unreliant on the small trickle down of money.
Be strong that the 84 or so pro clubs left don't have to let them take any youngster signed and developed at an early age for peanuts, proper fees need paying.
Don't let them dictate the rules or fixture times, days etc (or even rules!) for any of the Domestic Cup competitions those in the Super League are allowed to play in.
The current balance is that 95% of the power sits with the 5% of the clubs supporter share.... the rest of us add up to a majority amount of supporter numbers. With that comes viewing figures and the English domestic league will ALWAYS have interest across the globe even without the so called top 4 or 6 or whatever.
Collaborate with other parts of Europe in same boat and bring back a form of Euro comp for those of us treated as the great unwashed.
I'm convinced clubs will be stronger and the mega billions Saudi based sport washing mob will soon see their product dilute in popularity apart from virtual viewing (which is really all they want)

Only a handful of clubs have sustained success or are competitive at an elite level. For the rest of us sh*t munchers it’s a different story. That’s just how football is set up.
For now our aim should getting in and around the play-offs and building towards promotion. As fans we should try and enjoy that journey. We need to stop looking longingly at the premier league. |  | | |

A lot of our most recent problems were caused by us having our first play-off worthy run of form in a decade (while playing in empty stadiums) and chucking all previous plan and ethos out the door in favour of Austin, Johanson, Gray type signings to try and get us there.

Of course it's worth doing.
However, you have to get so much right to get promoted in the first place. And we're well short of that, ATM. We would need an Adel or Eze level of player to get there. Ideally, I'd want to go up automatically, as winning the playoffs puts you 3 weeks behind everybody else.
If/when you get there, survival is a different ball game. You probably need to spend £60m as a bare minimum on 3 or 4 players to supplement those who got you up. Even then there's no guarantees. But you would get back 100m+ in parachute payments. That would put you in a solid position to go again.

The key is to get up and get a foothold in staying in the league without throwing millions down the drain. Palace, Brighton, and Brentford have been really successful in establishing themselves and building on this. At the moment we look a nailed on middle of the road Championship team, probably looking nervously over our shoulder every year to just about survive in the Championship, rather than a team that is pointing upwards. Confidence and momentum is a big part in football and that has been something missing from Rangers for a number of years now. |  | | |

It seems highly unlikely that we can ever finish in the top 6 of the Premiership the way the finances and ffp are currently set up. Even if the richest person on earth took us on, the limitations of ffp and the fact you already have around 7 London clubs in the Premiership, doesn't make us that enticing.
Sure we could do a Luton or Ipswich one season and get promoted but it is looking more and more difficult to stay up to the point that the established clubs look very secure. It doesn't help that some of the recent promotions to the promised land recently came up from league 1 while we continue hovering in boggy ground around 16th place desperately trying not to sink.
Right now we look more geared up for league 1 than the top league but even if I overdose on happy pills and had strange dreams of us ever returning to the Premiership what would we achieve. In the 70's to 90's when things were more balanced we won nothing. We had some good and entertaining teams with some top managers so it is hard to see us winning anything even if we see the Premier League ever again.
We can hark back to better times but yet lesser teams outdid us in winning trophies. In 1973 Burnley and us were the best teams in division 2 but Sunderland won the FA Cup. Stan Bowles could never understand how they achieved that. In 1976 with our best ever team it was second division Southampton that lifted the FA Cup. I think Newcastle knocked us out of both cups but we won both league fixtures.
In the 80's we handed Oxford the League Cup with a display that looked as though we were involved in match fixing. Coventry always seemed to be fighting relegation but they lifted the FA Cup in 87. I think the following season we finished 5th in 88 but it was Luton who won the League Cup. In effect teams who languished behind us in the league were winning honours when we had better teams than them. Sadly I think we missed the boat in the 23 years from 73-96 during our best ever period in our history. |  | | |
