The first 11 did well, substitutions broke the momentum. Talla showed some decent stuff, the rest of the subs less so. Thought the initial cross for their 2nd goal was offside, lino was behind play a lot.

Positive performance to me, v gd for 20 mins either side of half time, looking to move forward. Nice to see so many young players putting in strong performances. Defensively a bit shambolic but great so many squad players can slot in well. With a focal point up front and more defensive organisation signs we could be better next year.
What next year as in January
AND WHEN I DREAM , I DREAM ABOUT YOU AND WHEN I SCREAM I SCREAM ABOUT YOU!!!!!
Hope I don't sound excessively positive, but, I found that quite an enjoyable game to watch (on the computer screen). The QPR goals were good and it must have been a good work-out.
A concern? I lost count of the number of times when we were attacking and were well into their half when I said to myself 'It's going to be back with Joe Walsh pretty soon'. Sure enough, from somewhere near their penalty area ffs, a series of passes sent the ball back to our goalkeeper. Granted, Walsh did set up Daniel Bennie with an excellent long ball, but, 'passing out from the back' became simply 'passing back' - a little too often, for my taste.

Really like his messaging on risks/mistakes. Too many of this squad are prone to heads dropping the moment they mess up. Fixing that mentality is a big job, like that heās identified it early

Absolutely, you can't play good passing football without more risks than we usually take. Safe pass sidewards, safe pass backwards, safe pass back to Walsh, Walsh punt. Stephane sounds like he won't accept that. Marvellous.
I thought some of the decision making/risk in the 2nd half passing was really encouraging. Some very positive progressive passing, trusting players' touch, first time touches and quick decisions.
Morrison looks like he could be a very good passer from the back.
Far more encouraged than after Cardiff.

Itās all very well Stephan saying players must take risks (Marti said the same), but you must have the players to be able to do so. Sam Field, simply cannot play out, or play on the half turn, he doesnāt have that ability and no amount of training will give him that ability. Itās not coachable. Itās why true ball-playing DCMs are hard to come by.
Varane is also poor at it. This is a long term problem at the club that is unsolved and will continue to be our Achilles heel. It will massively effect the ability of this team to āplay it out from the backā - which is part of the stated game model. And there is a real conflict there, based on the CM players available in the squad. Only Morgan gets close to the level needed.

I do think if we are going to play 2 in midfield with Chair in behind the striker we are in for a world of pain. Field is a great battler, but isn't great at progressing the ball, whilst Madsen and Morgan are far too easy to run off. I'd still have 3 in there with Chair off the left.
The need for a left back is stark as well

I love Jimmy but doesn't look good usual self
Dunne had a great game, his positional sense was first class. Lost count of the number of times he intercepted the ball played out to their left winger. He is exceptional at reading the game. Comes from experience.

quite enjoyed the game, was nice to be back at Loftus Road
Two good goals but overall didn't really learn anything new. We are desperate for a forward or 2, is a farce that we've played 2 pre season games now without one.
In midfield we are not great at moving the ball out from the back and wide open when we lose the ball.
Could do with a left back as well, That long term Larkeshe deal already feels like a mistake
Lots to do but some positives as well, Dembele and Poku looked a threat, we played some really nice stuff at times as well

We are hopeless at playing out from the back. Cook in both this game and the previous one can been seen with the palms of his hands facing upwards in utter frustration because he has no one showing for the ball in midfield. The lack of movement is shocking. Herveen on the other hand, had players coming short to receive the ball and other players moving into space to create triangles to bypass our sporadic press. Couldnāt get near them for the first half hour.
We have quality individuals, but still no discernible patterns of play.

There were positive signs . Donāt agree entirely that there were no set patterns of play . Morgan finding space , playing triangles with Jimmy and playing the ball in behind a couple of times in that first half was clearly worked on and very positive. Thought Morgan looked decent first half . Played deeper second half and once again faded. Madsen looked everything he described himself in his club interview for the first 20 mins. Low confidence and timid. But fair play to him , I thought the next 25 mins he was very good and was in that sort of quarter back role . He has a great footballing brain and when he can, he likes to move the ball on first time. I liked him in there , but he will need others around him to compensate .
Last 20 mins was probably the most inexperienced Rangers team I can remember and it started to show at the end .
Like every pre season recently (the year we beat Man United aside) , I feel like we are way off . I envisage playing the first game of the season and getting absolutely thumped ā¦but we donāt usually . We might get beat , but we look competitive and not a million miles off like the weeks previous. I just hope that happens again . Players get themselves fit and quick , move players on if they are going (Kelman , Nardi? , Varane? ) and get some bodies in the the building to bolster this young and still unphysical squad. Because those 2 goals conceded today we got out muscled , and Iād suggest every other team in the championship will be considerably more aggressive and physical than Heerenveen were. But first we have to deal with Brentford.
Really dreading that one .

We scored a couple of beauties but our defending still seems to be all over the place. Bennie could be a wild card this season. I really like his pace and confidence and still only just 19!

Bit of post match Julien. Is it me or has his English come on quite a lot already in the first month being here?
All very well taking risks and making mistakes to create chances but to take risks and make mistakes to break a high press playing out from the back will get punished in the Championship. Iād be far happier if those risky moments were confined to the opposition half ala Warnock/Taraabt. Mind you, the thought of our out ball being the Sunday league tactic of booting it upfield onto Jimmyās head is depressing. What a conundrum.
