Is Still getting his excuses in early? 14:30 - Jul 26 with 2576 viewsPatfromPoole

Will Still talks an awful lot of sense.

However, he is saying “some players need to go”, which while not in the league of Redknapp’s “it’s not my team” stuff, is still to some degree a bit of arse-covering.

He knows fully well it is going to be damned hard to get overpaid underachieving players out of the club.

(Though Christ knows why we gave one of them a new 3-year contract).

He also knows we will need to get those players out to enable funds to be released for players he does actually want in.

I just get the feeling there is a bit of groundwork being laid to set the scene if results don’t go well for us in the games that actually count.

Would be interesting to be a fly on the wall in some of the discussions between Still and Spors over the next few weeks.

I imagine Kyle Walker-Peters is the happiest he's ever been after escaping the swamp of incompetence.

The pre-season performances are getting worse. Only Ramsdale has saved us from worse results.

So... a possible player cull/clear-out at the eleventh hour right up to the close of transfer deadline day itself - with no time to bring in badly needed new players before the window closes?

Tis so the Southampton/Sport Republic way. You just know it.

Aye.

I can see it being a flurry of late loan signings at the end of August, firstly outgoings and then players coming in.

The only player I can see us selling in the next couple of weeks is Bednarek.

I think Ramsdale may well be loaned out.

Nobody is going to want to buy Bella-Kotchap, Brereton and possibly even Dibling outright.

Reading between the lines, I think Will Still has quickly found out that too many of the squad have a sh1t/lazy/Can't be arsed attitude & think they're too good for a season in the Championship having been playing in the Premier League last season.

Good luck with that then Will. I don't envy him having to handle several big ego's who think they're too good to drop a division... and won't be taking 'orders' from a manager who's 'only' 32-years old!

How long before we start questioning the manager, when Stephens makes a mistake, we can't score etc etc. Any chance if getting the real culprits out??

Oh I'm more than happy to give Will Still a fair crack of the whip to implement his style & way of doing things.

Five or six games say?

I think last season was sobering and I really don't think any of them think they're too good now. In fact he probably has the opposite job where he has to instill some actual belief.

I remember the Great Alan Ball telling me that he found it impossible to manage players that had bigger salaries & bigger ego's than he had.
So what chance has WS got.
But where there's a " Will" there's a way.

Should have brought in a no nonsense manager with seasons of playing and management experience, especially Championship experience.

Still is younger than Lallana FFS, and even with all his experience (Lallana), he seems out of his depth.
They'll suddenly realise this come November, after a lot more humiliation, and bring in yet anther manager, hopefully one who knows what he's doing.

I really hope I'm wrong, but at the moment I can't see lights at the end of any tunnels.

This is how I see it . I’d love to see Still do well but for many reasons I think he won’t last psst October.

What a lunch of moaning Minnie’s and the Saints have yet to play a serious game. While many comments are logical especially regarding the appalling suicidal play of the club captain the comments are boring. So I’ll be leaving this site until the season proper starts when comments have some relevance.

Which bit of “some players need to go” is inaccurate?

There's a huge job to do, and I am not sure where the bookies are getting their information from, making us favourites for the league. Things are far more settled at Ipswich for example with the same manager who got them promoted last time.

We have players that don't want to be here, but will quite happily stay here earning a big wage, as nobody will buy them as they're rubbish. We can't therefore get players in, as the squad is too big. The good players we might want to bring in, will be bought by other clubs if we don't hurry up. We still have Stephens at the back, and Bazunu in goal. Bereton Diaz is apparently on such a big wage, nobody wants him, so we might as well play him, yet he's been terrible. Players like Ross Stewart, who would bother buying him, an injury prone player that never scores? We are stuck with him. There are problems wherever you look.

I can only see a season of consolidation and building a squad for a promotion push the following season, at best.

Here is his actual thoughts, I don’t think he’s getting excuses in he’s just stating facts which most of us knew anyway. I expect the squad will look totally different with many changes come the end of August. It’s going to be a busy month .

It will only be busy if we are able to shift players out.

Once the big boys get what they want everything else filters down allowing some of the deadwood to be sold.

Pat, you predicted a long time ago what would happen in this transfer window, i.e. our best players will be sold after the season has started and a few loanees will be brought in to patch up the team. Any serious money will be spent speculating on youngsters who might (but probably won't) be sold for a profit.

In terms of what happens on the pitch, Sport Republic don't seem to have learned anything from their past mistakes, but perhaps they don't really care as long as they can make money in the transfer market.

Which vociferous critics on the Ugly Inside will slavishly renew their season tickets and attend all the matches they can this season?
If everyone did that, nothing would change, right or not ?
