We're experimenting with some new tech that would allow us to record on the train back from away games - sort of audio Awaydays.
Summer Transfer Window - Patreon Podcast on 11:34 - Sep 4 with 3966 views | daveB | Do agree with Tom that a move to play 4-4-2 could work really well for us, defenders just don't know how to cope with big physial forwards and are clueless against 2 forwards as no one plays that way. With the wide players we have it could really work for us | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That could make for interesting listening, I mean imagine hypothetically you'd gone to Coventry then recorded your thoughts on the train back.....

Totally agree - but do you think any of these central midfielders can work as a 2? Based on the last 18 months the only workable tactic would be go direct and stick 2 of Hayden, Varane and Field in there on the premise they don’t need to progress the ball. Nothing wrong with that approach, but will The Model TM allow it?

Balanced considering this included a 7-1 defeat, great debate and I can see what CN is doing. It’s the silence on things that annoys, Chair being the latest example. With you Clive, though I am the eternal optimist, we have a top 10 squad assembled, the signings make the bench options for us amazing if by some miracle the vast majority were fit. Love the bit at the end about fathers and memories, I know a number of us who have a massive lump in their throat every time the team comes out to pig bag. That is what makes it special. Particularly well managed this one Clive

They are playing as a 2 at the moment anyway, I think you can adapt it start with the current formation and switch to 4-4-2 second half or start 4-4-2 and switch back if needed

The guy behind the striker is offering some protection and dropping in to link though at the moment (especially if it’s Chair). A proper two up front wouldn’t be coming to get the ball on the halfway line like Chair/Madsen/Vale. I just don’t think we have the CMs for a 2 without sacrificing quite a lot creatively. But agree depending on the state of the game going to 442 when ahead / starting it away at bigger teams etc might be a shout.

I'm not a nourry fan but accept he appears to be managing the financial / recruitment side well, can't help feel Matts enthusiasm for him is wishful thinking, but we'll all know in time and should try to reserve judgement for another year or so. 100% agree with Hunter though that we need transparency on the clubs objectives for us all to understand, align and ensure accountability. All nervously saying 'be in the Premier league' at the fans forum meant nothing.

Are Vale/Chair coming back that often? I think if you play Burrell and Kone together they are both capable of dropping back to help when we don't have the ball plus you have hard working wide players like Saito and Smyth around to help out

Maybe not. Fair points on wingers (though beyond those two there isn’t much defensive output). I dunno, I’m just a bit lost/concerned about the midfield - all the talk of 6s and 10s, our recruitment team seem to forget that you can be both.
Summer Transfer Window - Patreon Podcast on 15:53 - Sep 4 with 3057 views | Hunterhoop | The other point about an out and out front 2, which I failed to make on the pod, is that it enables a more effective first line press, because there are 2 of them, not one. This might lead to opposition defences going long more often. Clearly there is a risk with a two man central midfield. I think you can only play 442 if both your midfielders are excellent positionally and sit deep, rarely getting involved up the pitch or into the box. With our wide players (perhaps Smyth is an exception) if one of the central midfielders gets caught too high in open play, we’ll be torn apart. So, it would always be 2 from Field, Varane, Hayden. Is that a problem though? I feel it somewhat ironic that we have made signings for the 4231 game model, but, because we haven’t signed that progressive ball player in the middle who always wants the ball, takes it off the defenders and plays forward, and instead we signed Varane, and now Hayden (to go along with Field), we actually have a squad that may be better suited to a 442, or a counter attacking 433. Would like Stephan to have the flexibility to explore this anyway.

I agree with your post, LongRanger. But, two things I'd be wary of: 1) You 'accept he appears to be managing the financial...side well', but genuinely we have no idea if a novice with no qualifications in his first full-time football job is managing the financial side well, so we should be extremely cautious. (Note: Lee Hoos, a n experienced CFO who himself brought us to the FFP precipice, is Chairperson now, not CFO). 2) 'we'll all know in time and should try to reserve judgement for another year or so'. I don't think we can wait a year. I think we have to be all over this. It's our club. In one year, we could be mid-table and going along smoothly or we could be in relegation and financial trouble. In the last years, we had a fair idea whteher the club was financially safe, and a confidence that it was. Under Nourry, we have no idea if our club is financially over-committed. I hate to be a worrier, but we have to be all over this.

Summer Transfer Window - Patreon Podcast on 18:16 - Sep 4 with 2733 views | BazzaInTheLoft | Best episode ever. Well done all. Arguably no family has done more for the club than the Winton family, but the view about fans and staff from Matt was a complete antipode to my own opinion about how things should be. Nevertheless, a lesson in respectful dialogue.

Not digging out - interested in why you feel we have "a top 10 squad assembled"? I still think we're in trouble this season.... on the edge of big trouble. Up top it does look like Kone might do okay - Frey I like but when strikers talk about one in three they means goals, with Frey it's games and at the moment that's wishful thinking. Burrell has running in him but on first view needs time to get to grips with the step up. The other option is Kolli who I can see out the door to Turkey due to off field shenanigans (shame). Midfield remains a big worry. Hayden will be miles off fitness and will he play 80% of games? Dunno what's happened to Field but he was my mainstay and him not being selected is a concern. Varanne I've said is class but we cannot expect him to do all of Madsen's running and he (Madsen) is a big concern as Nourry will keep picking him. Out wide we look alright but for me Dembele is bench fodder at best. Defence is Morrison and Dunne plus whoever we can crowbar into other positions and not signing Handsome Ron was a real kick on the proverbials. Glass Salter is fast becoming a waste of time, Cook has put Nourry's nose out of joint with the extension and the rest are raw at best. Then we come to the Keeper spot which is vital. That looks a real mess to me and I can only hope Nardi is the consumate pro and bides his time and then grabs a chance if it comes along. Will our Napoleon settle on tactics that suit teams at our level? I dunno if he will or even if he can. Hopefully we'll be fine but troubling the top 10? Not for me.
