Now I have calmed down I think we should be happy with a draw.
Why? I hear you say, well its too early to become despondent.
The first half was awful and we could have gone in a couple of goals down.
The second half was better, not much I grant you but better.
The new players look promising.
When we settle into a team(hopefully with punch upfront ) I think we will look a lot better.
As for Pompey, they had a good game plan but apart from Murphy I cant see them scoring many.
A draw was a good result bearing in mind the first half so lets look forward with optimism.

I am being repetitive in saying this but I maintain that we will need two seasons to put right the mess of last season.
We will get there in the end. I will be content with mid table season finish this season if it seems we are making progress on building the team and squad.

Meanwhile back on planet earth grumps :-

1. We have spent £50 million in the last window and still don’t have a centre forward even though it’s obvious to every man and his dog that we couldn’t score goals last season let alone this.

2. Archer is a journey man with a poor good scoring record, Armstrong looks disinterested and nowhere near is past best, Stewart looks like an old man trying to avoid his next injury and Downs looks completely out of his depth.

3. We are lower mid table having won just one game out of five and are already two wins and a draw behind the top team and two wins behind the second team.

4. The manager appears to have no idea as to how he wants the team to play let alone what his best team is.

Don’t see too much to be optimistic about there but we are all entitled to our opinions I suppose.

Spot on 😉

There isn't any sign of improvement. We can't score and wont score because we don't have any strikers who can score goals.

To save the disappointment of only finishing 10th or below? If we do better, it can be a big celebration.

I'm not sure we even have a best team. Sport Republic's recruitment results in us having a big squad of equally mediocre players. Any player who is above average is sold. We then spend the money buying players for ten times the price other Championship clubs would pay to get players of the same standard or better, as we saw with the Stoke team that beat us, which cost next to nothing in transfer fees.

Sport Republic's recruitment is abysmal. Tens of millions are poured down the drain as every transfer window makes the team even worse. We are now a lower mid-table 2nd tier team. Another transfer window could be enough for Sport Republic to turn us into a bottom 3 team.

Today our best 3 players were Stephens, Bazunu and Charles. Who'd have thought we'd be saying that a couple of years ago? If any of them plays well enough to attract a buyer, they'll be sold and replaced by someone worse.

This is so true though isn't it. It's almost as if some fans turn a blind eye because they are too scared to face the truth. The recruitment has been terrible and you are right that any decent player is replaced by someone worse, inexperienced and not up to the job. Sport Republic need to go. I've said it for years.

Grumpy, we're a fuxxing shambles and it is getting worse. We are little better in the Championship than we were in the Premiership. A draw is not enough when too many points have already been dropped.
What is it that makes Southampton players into a bunch of spineless gutless toxsers as soon as they step onto a pitch? Most of us have had enough of it whatever it is.

To some degree Grumps, I agree. That said, what worries me are the tactics. Will Still does not seem to as yet have a clear plan or style. Again, that said it must be hard for all of those under RM to shake off the tika taka stuff that was drilled into them for so long. I wont be calling for his head just yet. but of course the risk there is, if we give him say 20 games, it will probably be too late by then to mount a promotion charge. That is to say, if he has us 15th after 20 games, it will be highly unlikely the new man will get us promoted. I guess we just have to accept that we may not go up this season and have to be patient like Leeds were.

Didn’t see much Tiki-Taka yesterday, just long balls to Archer who was beaten in the air every time.

Where was our £7m 6ft 4in American international Centre Forward when we needed him?!

I'm still retaining some optimism although I totally understand why so many are already despairing when you consider SRs track record.

Just want to point out out that by Oct 1st 2023 we were 10th in the Championship.
10 games in 13 points.
4 wins , 4 losses, 2 draws. ...we still ended up on 87pts playing Russball.

It's still early days and I think we'll be in the playoffs positions come Xmas.

That team was better than this one, but still nowhere near good enough for automatic promotion or the top flight.

This team looks 2nd tier mid-table standard at best. We don't even have anyone who can score goals regularly and you need goals to win games. Maybe, Will Still will eventually realize we need a new centre forward and we'll buy one in January, who'll get us into the top half of the table. But, with Sport Republic's transfer record, I doubt it.

The progress we're making is downwards.

He still is but Still doesn't seem to realize that, which is why we've now got an inferior player, Finn Azaz, keeping him out of the team. Why on earth was our main buy in the transfer window someone to replace our best player? Maybe they're planning ahead for the sale of Jay Robinson next year.

I suspect the signing of Scienza will make it even more difficult for Robinson to get game time.

He's competing against Fraser, Fellows, Scienza and dare I say it Edozie.

Meanwhile we have a dearth of goalscorers.

Maybe he could adapt his game to be more of a goalscorer......

Jay Robinson is an attacking midfielder, not an out and out striker, and he'll probably score at the reasonable rate of a goal every 4 games and still be our top scorer this season if he gets enough game time. Why should he have to adapt because Sport Republic have bought a bunch of attacking midfielders who aren't as good as him, when we all knew they should have bought a goalscoring centre forward?

Re comment about Sport Republic.
I agree that recruitment under Sports Republic has not been that great or provided value for money.
That said we have spent more that more or less any other club in the Championship this year and , hopefully, some/all of the new recruits will benefit the team going forward.
The major issue in my mind, during Sport Republic, especially this year is not finding a suitable goalscoring/target type centre forward.
Downs seems to be another waste of money and finds himself below Archer, Edwards and Armstrong as the main striker.
The question I ask of people who say 'get rid of Sport Republic, who do you think will replace them?
There are plenty of worse owners out there.
The owners could easily have pocketed the £80m or so from recent transfers and not invested a decent wedge back into the club.
I can sympathise with those who are frustrated with the teams start to the season but I would rather look at the performance of Recruitment, Management and Players than the owners at this stage.

Sport Republic still made £62m profit on transfers this summer after spending on players.

I agree with Grumps.

Yes we spent £50m in the window but about £39m of that was on players who made their debut on Saturday or the game before and Still had little time to work with them

I agree I'd like to have seen a striker come in and probably a couple go out but it's not always easy to get the right player

After 5 games we're 15th on equal points with Ipswich who have spent more than us and we have 4 points less that we had after 8 games in the 2023-24 promotion season.

You say the manager appears to have no idea as to how he wants the team to play let alone what his best team is. Well probably 6 of his preferred starting 11 have only just come through the door so it’s understandable.

I think Still has got to be given a chance to work with the new players. There's a big job to do after last season's debacle but I am optimistic. As you say though we are all entitled to our opinions
