Two days ago I hadn’t given the pitch a second thought, but as I prepare to set off in a couple of hours for a Dale centric weekend I am thinking “Dale are a different animal this season and won’t make a stupid decision re the use of the covers”. Fingers crossed. As for the game the basic rule of thumb is that if Gus Scott Morris plays well then Southend play well. Now I have already said I think Berkoe was a good signing for us, and he could do a number on him. However if he swaps flanks to go up against Allarakhia that could be more trouble for us. Southend have an injury doubt about the forward Kendall. The local rag has gone silent about his prospects of playing, which makes me think he will be in the side. If not the Southend fans see Hopper as a significant downgrade. Rather like Mani being missing for us. The last Dale win I saw against Southend at Spotland was the crucial 1-0 win relegation battle win.it’s time for it to happen again. I see a tight game with the Dale edging it. TVOS Preview - Rochdale v Southend United on 11:21 - Sep 19 with 6794 views | WhitworthDale | Huge game, even this early in the season. Hoping for a strong crowd and an equally strong performance. Mani D is a big loss, but he was never going to play every game, and the point of having a big squad is to address these things. We didn't have him in the team in the play offs when we went 3-1 up. I'd like to see Gomez Mancini play a significant part. He and McBride are both pushing for starts, as is Burger after scoring mid-week. We'll need everyone to play to their best tomorrow, v much looking forward to what I expect will be a highly competitive game. Up the Dale! I'd go with the below: Whatmuff Gordon EEL Beckwith TAR Berkoe East Gilmour McBride Barlow Amantchi

TVOS Preview - Rochdale v Southend United on 12:17 - Sep 19 with 6704 views | Shrimper1906 | I have absolutely no idea what Southend Utd will turn up on Saturday, hopefully the one with the determination of our last visit to Spotland. Highly unlikely that Kendall will play as he hasn't trained at all this week, so it could well be Josh Walker that partners Dallas. As you say, looking forward to a very tight game with no idea what the final score will be. Bloody ludicrous ko time (thank you DAZN) and whilst you're looking chilly with rain, the temperature here at the moment is 24c with bright sun. By the way, Gus has scored twice and has two assists already this season, dunno what that tells me. [Post edited 19 Sep 12:19]

Fair point TS, Rodders in for Amantchi or Barlow perhaps from the start. Personally I thought he had a poor game at Truro but he's often a threat and pretty unstoppable when playing well. Would be a horrible sub for the oppo to have to deal with!

No Rodney or Allrakhia? Personally I think it will be the same team as we have started all season with Amantchi coming in for Mani. The only other change potentially may be Berkoe for Allrakhia. Despite how well McBride has done coming from the bench the others haven't done anything that has warranted losing their place. The obvious candidate would be Barlow but in my opinion he cant be left off the team sheet. [Post edited 19 Sep 13:15]

There seems to be a theme this week, the idea of starting games with our two biggest goalscoring threats sitting on the bench? Somebody posted last week that Mani should have been dropped to the bench against Truro, he's scored in nearly every game this season. We can't not pick our best player to try to protect him from a booking. Rodney ripped Southend apart four months ago and scored twice. The opposition would love to see players of that calibre not starting games. It makes no sense to me. I can't see how Rodney and Amantchi wont be starting tomorrow and there is no chance of Barlow being dropped. We're at home tomorrow, its up to us to go out and win the game, score some goals. We have a 100% home record, there's no need to start changing how we set up as a team, Amantchi is a target man like Mani. Barlow has been a standout performer, not sure why he should be dropped to the bench. [Post edited 19 Sep 14:54]

Sure. As I said above fair point - I’m not a football manager, just throwing some thoughts out there ahead of the game.

Can see why it might be an option, if not right now. Rodney on form is often unstoppable, but when he’s on the periphery of the action his touch can be off and he doesn’t make the most of his obvious attributes. At that stage, a more consistent performer could be seen as an alternative. He has to find that level of consistency, though there’s an argument that if he did he might not still be with us. He’s very difficult to leave out because of the potential to be that player teams cannot cope with.

As for us making special plans for Scott-Morriss - yes he is probaby their most important player but Allarakhia on his day can give him tonnes of problems and deserves to keep his place. One more thing - I noticed this week that Rodney is still only 27 years old! He seems to have been around for years. His goal against Southend last season was unbelievable skill and finish - they will be very wary of him. [Post edited 19 Sep 20:56]

They also have the water blotter rollers and you’d hope covers are left over the problem areas as late as possible, either way if the rain continues as forecast through the game there could be problems.

Possibly, last season, Scott-Morriss was the talisman for the side, but not this season. New additions to the side have made us more rounded, and the signing of Andrew Dallas has added the much needed finishing skills.

The pitch issue was somewhat forgotten due to the fortunate weather we had for the last 3 months of the season when it hardly rained. We can’t overlook that there were real concerns about getting any games on for a while. We’ve got to hope that the covers are going to help, but the problem of how the pitch stands up to any sustained period of rain remains - if we can’t guarantee there will be no issue with it being uncovered for a few hours before/during a game, then it could be a long winter. It’s certainly not great that we’re not even at the end game of September and fans are in doubt and checking every weather forecast available.

Water removal from covers commences 1pm. Cover removal commences 3pm with some areas left until 4pm.

That makes sense.. Combine the water hog style rollers can be deployed from 4pm until kick off we should be fine for game ON!. Those cricket club style hogs with the sponge rollers do a great job removing surface water.

Needing to leave the covers on some areas may indicate that there could be problems once heavy rain is able to get on the surface there. The ref will also be looking at the prospect of issues during the game, not just at kick off time. That all said, credit to the club and volunteers for doing all they can with the covers/other equipment and using them as effectively as possible.

It was concerning that there was what appeared to be surface water on the pitch towards the TDS end on Tuesday. I hope the rain covers have helped protect that area. If there is a postponement today, it doesn't bode well for the coming months. Up the Dale.
