Great report on a pretty forgetable QPR display .I did not see the game but as a regular habit of mine I read the match thread from start to finish and the people watching on the feed must have seen it a bit different than you .Dembele got a lot of stick for his attitude and play after his initial burst of energy and chances yet you almost gave him MOM so he must be doing way more live
We did not lose ,looked pretty tired so lets move on and see if we can start a new streak

Great report . I saw Dembele’s performance pretty similar. I thought he looked sharp and made a difference .

‘remember last season QPR persisted with something that clearly wasn’t working deep into October’

I don’t want to be as pedantic as the referee was but I think it was Cifuentes, rather than QPR. He’s gone…he’s definitely not going to shag you now.

Fine report. Covered everything. And there was a lot to cover.

Thanks as ever.

Any need for that, really?

"Tough tackling Danish midfielder Nicolas Madsen..."

Classic stuff as usual, Clive.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a player quite like Bannan,
He looks every inch a Sunday league player with his massive shorts, stumpy little legs, slightly protruding gut and dodgy tintin baldy head......but he runs every single game I 've ever seen him play in.

I too was looking to see if he has a twin that disguises himself as a ball boy who in the blink of an eye throws off his jacket, sneaks onto the the pitch unnoticed and pops up 120 yards away from where you last saw him.

Towards the end, he took a free kick near the half way line, thumped it into the box, where it was nodded away, and there he was, on the edge of the box to pick it up having run past two or three motionless Rangers players to keep the attack going.

He truly is a force of nature.

Thanks Clive - Didn't get to see the game only the highlights so always great to get your report on proceedings.

I would of been happy with a point before the game and it will be an even better point if we can get a win Wednesday night.

"Easy stuff with hindsight" sums it up for me.

When we don't get the result or the performance we might have wanted, it's human nature to wonder "why didn't we...?"

The big questions I had before and afterwards were:

1) Do we freshen up the team?
2) Do we man-mark or aggresively press Bannon, and

It would be very easy now for us to say we should have freshened the team up, or that we should have man-marked Bannon.

In truth, it would take a brave manager to change the team before kick-off or to take a man off of other team duties to deal solely with Bannon. I suspect that very few of us would have done either had the call been ours. I don't think I would have.

The one that stands out for me is why we stood off them for the majority of the game. Was that the plan? Or did the players fail to carry out instructions, either through tiredness, inexperience or for another reason? That's the real curiosity, in my opinion, as it seemed like a departure?

Excellent report again, Clive, covering all aspects of a very decent point. As you and others have said, it's all about Oxford now in terms of putting this draw into context. Of this 3-Game Week , Wed night was always going to be The Big One. Thank you.

The stream I "watched" was possibly the worst I've ever seen, so I'm not sure I'm qualfied to make any comments about the game! However, the stream behaved itself for the opening period of the second half & for 15 minutes Dembele looked like winning the match for us. Sadly, he disappeared, as did the steam, around the hour mark.

It looked to me that Wednesday had prepared themselves for how we have recently played & carried out their duties to a man. Apart from Bannan, who once again took us apart, I thought that Brown was very impressive.

On to Oxford. Hopefully the same result as the match last season, but please can we have a better performance than that game produced!

What another brilliant report.
For me, the key word is expectation rtaher than complacency. When expected to beat opposition, we seem to lack belief and conviction. The coach needs to change that somehow.

A very fair report of a really poor match.

Saturday proved that we aren't a top six side, if anyone thinks that anyway.

Suffering since 1978.

Cheers Clive great report. And a nice appreciation of Bannan, I mean he's a pain whenever he plays us, but fair play to the guy.

One request, can the Prem please keep their refs to themselves? I mean I think even a League One ref would manage a Championship game better (yes I know it's time for my meds).

A very accurate and fair report.

Interesting anecdote about the penalty. I didn't know or had forgotten it. When you say new rule, is it new to you or a change in the laws?

I thought for 70 mins of the match it was all pretty standard QPR up north, second to most balls, far too slow when we had the ball and producing some calamity moments to gift teams a goal.

The encouraging bit was that spell after half time where we did look very good, scored one and really should have scored another 2. When this team are on it they look very good and exciting, I'd give them a pass for the other 70 as we still managed to get something from the game

Next few weeks will be interesting now teams have had a chance to see our change in approach and make plans to counter it, as said in the report they had a plan to stop the front 2 and Saito and it worked really well

As for Bannan he was superb, a different planet to anyone else on the pitch

Good report Clive as usual , that’s how I saw it. One thing you didn’t mention though was whoever at the club thinks it’s a good idea to get Madsen to mark probably most dangerous player at set pieces needs to go on another coaching course.

It doesn't have to be all hindsight though, does it Brian? That's the beauty of a live game unfolding in front of you. JS and his coaching staff have the opportunity to change the narrative of a game tactically any time they wish. Like Clive, I was impressed with JS conviction in making substitutions at half time, and said as much on the match thread. But changes are all well and good, but need to be reactive to what needs fixing.
Bannon is allowed the freedom of Hillsborough and is pulling all the strings. So half-time is the time to decide to man-mark him and Hayden should have been detailed to do that job. Doesn't matter what part of the pitch he is on, if he goes to the bathroom, Hayden stands outside the door. A debate on here before the game on this topic, raised the question, can we afford to sacrifice one of our midfielders to do a man marking job. The answer is a resounding YES if it nullifies their WHOLE team in the process. Stop Bannon you stop SW.
Similarly, Burrell not being allowed to run in behind, because of their Low Block. Fair enough, take him off and replace him with Frey. But then why is Frey in midfield, which to put it kindly is not his strength. Why not have him on the edge of the box, which the low block facilitates and get him to hold the ball up to bring others into play.
Smyth comes in for Vale, good shout as he is fast and tenacious - what he isn't is a lone striker, so why is he up front on his own. Get Smyth and Dembele wide. stretch the low block, get Kone and Frey into the box and deliver from wide areas - see what comes of that?
Sorry, Brian, longwinded response. My (eventual) point being that there is no need to look back and say 'ah hindsight is 20/20 vision' Change the bloody thing that is unfolding in front of your eyes. He did the first part with decisive subs, just didn't utilise them in a way that might have won the match.

I suppose the main frustrating thing is we all know Bannan runs the show for them, happens every time, but we still didn't do enough to negate him.

Anyway as Clive said, he surely has to retire fairly soon!

and of course their only goal came from a free kick that Bannon took, marker free assist

I can see your point of view about keeping the same team.

On the other hand it was the first game in a three game week and we're going to have to freshen it up at some point in that week.

Why not do a job on Bannen here and keep the strongest eleven for the home game with Oxford?

But as you say it's always easy with hindsight!

Just felt like an off day from too many of our players so happy to come out of it with a point. I had it in my head that four points from this week would be a decent return so we’re on track for that. Oxford won’t be easy but you’ve got to hope for a win and then see what we can get from Bristol. I’d be tempted to start with Burrell on the bench on Weds then let him loose on Dickie on Saturday. U Rrrr’s!

Another plus for my self imposed 100 mile zone. It’s grim up North.

Fair enough putting Burrell up front and Kone in behind when we’re playing the good sides or promoted sides fancying themselves a bit, but these bread and butter games against sides who will likely play a low block, we should be putting Kone up front all day long.
