It doesn't have to be all hindsight though, does it Brian? That's the beauty of a live game unfolding in front of you. JS and his coaching staff have the opportunity to change the narrative of a game tactically any time they wish. Like Clive, I was impressed with JS conviction in making substitutions at half time, and said as much on the match thread. But changes are all well and good, but need to be reactive to what needs fixing.
Bannon is allowed the freedom of Hillsborough and is pulling all the strings. So half-time is the time to decide to man-mark him and Hayden should have been detailed to do that job. Doesn't matter what part of the pitch he is on, if he goes to the bathroom, Hayden stands outside the door. A debate on here before the game on this topic, raised the question, can we afford to sacrifice one of our midfielders to do a man marking job. The answer is a resounding YES if it nullifies their WHOLE team in the process. Stop Bannon you stop SW.
Similarly, Burrell not being allowed to run in behind, because of their Low Block. Fair enough, take him off and replace him with Frey. But then why is Frey in midfield, which to put it kindly is not his strength. Why not have him on the edge of the box, which the low block facilitates and get him to hold the ball up to bring others into play.
Smyth comes in for Vale, good shout as he is fast and tenacious - what he isn't is a lone striker, so why is he up front on his own. Get Smyth and Dembele wide. stretch the low block, get Kone and Frey into the box and deliver from wide areas - see what comes of that?
Sorry, Brian, longwinded response. My (eventual) point being that there is no need to look back and say 'ah hindsight is 20/20 vision' Change the bloody thing that is unfolding in front of your eyes. He did the first part with decisive subs, just didn't utilise them in a way that might have won the match.

The obvious question off the back of this is: do we freshen the team up on Wednesday? If the answer is yes (surely?!) who comes in for who?

Great report, and back to laugh out loud funny.

A really disappointing performance considering Stoke, Wrexham etc, but loved that JS hooked three at HT. You ain't doing it, you ain't playing. Reaction against Oxford expected.

Standards.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a player quite like Bannan,
He looks every inch a Sunday league player with his massive shorts, stumpy little legs, slightly protruding gut and dodgy tintin baldy head......but he runs every single game I 've ever seen him play in.

I too was looking to see if he has a twin that disguises himself as a ball boy who in the blink of an eye throws off his jacket, sneaks onto the the pitch unnoticed and pops up 120 yards away from where you last saw him.

Towards the end, he took a free kick near the half way line, thumped it into the box, where it was nodded away, and there he was, on the edge of the box to pick it up having run past two or three motionless Rangers players to keep the attack going.

He truly is a force of nature.

I was at the last ever game at Griffin Park in 2020, when Bees walloped Sheff Wed 5-0 (Wednesday were lucky to get nil).

Yet not only was Bannan the only SW player who performed that day, you could almost have made a case for his being MOTM, so good was he in a team of otherwise utter dross.

Phenomenal.

Not only did us suckers become the first team to concede at Hillsborough this season, but also it was Iorfa's first goal for over 12 months. You can always back us to help lame ducks. It would make a nice change if we did our homework on Wednesday as to how to play against them as they seem to do to us. Despite their struggles the last few years we never look like beating them.

Just felt like an off day from too many of our players so happy to come out of it with a point. I had it in my head that four points from this week would be a decent return so we’re on track for that. Oxford won’t be easy but you’ve got to hope for a win and then see what we can get from Bristol. I’d be tempted to start with Burrell on the bench on Weds then let him loose on Dickie on Saturday. U Rrrr’s!

Yes and hope Dickie is his usual handsy self.

I must say though, I do love that Stephan sees what we see – I hate it when you've sat through a load of sh*t, only for the manager to put lipstick on the pig and tell you it's well fit... Stephan seems to read it the same way and tell you that, lipstick or no, its well f*ckin ugly.

New to me.

I quite like the idea of making history by being the first team ever to get caught offside from a penalty.

If only there was something drawn on the pitch to indicate where the offside line was...

Or a betting App you could use to bet on it being disallowed ?

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

I think he might leave out Burrell and either go with an extra midfielder or Frey up front, Maybe start Smyth for Vale and then bring them both back for Saturday

Mbenge went off near the end I assume with a knock so maybe Cook or JCS in for him

To be strictly accurate, you can't be offside from a penalty. As well as staying out of the box, all players must stand behind the ball so if you get ahead it's a foul penalty with a retake not an offside. But like Clive that's a new one on me.

I mean is Barry Bloody Bannon really to be given some sort of Maradona like status?
He’s a great player and fair play to his commitment to their cause. However much of his game is human dynamo stuff, it’s not really on that he can out work our midfield; giving more energy than a bloke of 35 years old should be basic. Admittedly Barry Bloody Bannon does have good footballing brain for this level so does read the game and find space for himself well but….. still…..all this praise every kin time we play against “him”??

Nah!!

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

see it differently...

BBB was worse than ever. He ran past our 2 fastest guys more than once.
Marking him would be pointless. Keeping the ball away would be great.
