Keeper conundrum? 08:28 - Oct 9 with 5483 viewsdmm

I see Dieng is being linked to us again and it made me wonder what are the club's plans for the keeper position.

Dieng was heavily tipped to come back to us in the summer, but it fell through. Then we tried Walsh; not to good effect. Now we have Nardi, who's in the last year of his contract. Cooper is on another League 1 season long loan.

At a moment when the squad looks stronger than it has for a good few years, the keeper slot is the one with the most question marks against it. Do we stick or twist in January or next summer? And if we twist, is Dieng the answer?

I don't think Nardi is suited to this division, not sure how anyone ever thought he would be.

Walsh needs to go out on loan, probably should have gone before now.

So, yes, that means we're short at least one suitable keeper.

Edit: I think Dieng was excellent for us, but i wouldn't go back for him.

Would rather concentrate on Cooper and Salomon myself.

I know this is a hard argument to make when we’re 6th, but I think we are already damaging the long term plan by limiting minutes for Esquerdinha, Kolli, and Morgan.

(Re)signing a 30 year old keeper with three younguns already on our books seems counter to our long term strategy.

Also, didn’t some ITK on here say his attitude was a bit dodgy near the end? Could have been propaganda though.

I was never really overly impressed with Seny to be honest

I do though think he is an upgrade on both Walsh and Nardi... I lost all confidence in Walsh in that pre season game against Castillion... he was shocking

Nardi I personally think he doesn't want to be here now and can you blame him? It was clear he wasn't wanted, and it took an injury to Walsh to get back in the team.. when it was a case in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king

So Seny... not sure if I would take him back... he had that bad achillies injury at Christmas, and Bryn is keeping him.out. it would be a no for me

3rd choice at Boro, big contract running for another two years which suggests he won’t be cheap and only just coming back from a serious injury.

Not entirely convinced myself.

I would be very comfortable with Seny coming back, good solid Championship keeper. Nardi's continual sticking on the line has fried his chips I suspect, and Walsh needs to build some confidence on loan. Dieng back whilst Walsh develops seems a sensible plan?

Is it really necessary? If Murphy Cooper continues to impress at Barnsley then surely he should be coming back here next summer with an aim to be #1, otherwise what's the point (from his perspective) of staying with us?

Walsh I think has been stunted by too many years on the bench, he needs to go an spend a solid 2-3 years as a #1 in League 1/2 if he wants to make it in the Championship in future.

Despite our impressive recent form I still think it unlikely we'd be serious contenders for a top-6, so surely you'd just stick with Nardi for the year with the aim to bring Cooper back, rather than spend unnecessary money on another keeper who isn't probably going to make an enormous difference to the team you've got?

Same for me.

If it was a 30 year old Alex Smithies we're talking about, then absolutely! Mystifying how his career never really talk off. Really good keeper.

Wouldn't be much of a conundrum for me. Anyone this year is a stop gap until Murphy Cooper returns in the summer. Stand out keeper 2 years and running (so far) in League 1, he's fully earned his chance

I heard a rumour about someone coming back for Christmas but we don’t like rumours on this board so I’m not gonna say who.

ps: just to add every time I see Matteo Salamon in the Dev squad he looks better each time. Loads of confidence. Good shot stopper. One problem was he was giving the passing out from the back a go but needs more work on it - or just hoof it. Too early for him for the first team yet but he looks very promising looking further ahead.

Heard we are re signing George Bankole !! 🤣🤣🤣

Linked where?

I personally wouldn't resign him; especially as he'll likely be off to AFCON in Feb right?

Salamon is the one to be fast tracking his development IMO. He always impresses me when he plays, he has height over Cooper and is highly thought of by the few 1st team players I have had conversations with a out his prospects. I haven't given up on Walsh but he has definitely stagnated in his progress/development but I think there is still a good keeper in there.

The grass is always greener.

from the times ive seen soloman in the flsh hes got worse feet than nardi , good shot stopper though.

I thought one of the reasons Murphy Cooper not first choice here was his height - not something he can do much about.

But when looking at his height on Wikipedia, he is listed as 6 foot 1 inch. So although shorter than many goalkeepers for me that height is OK for a goalkeeper.

I think the reason we could bring in Seny is that next season, we could go into the season ahead with Murphy Cooper and Dieng as our two senior keepers and probably off load Walsh and Nardi.

Makes sense to me.

'Keepers don't make much money in transfer fees tour level and are bloody important. Not worried if they fall outside of the "model" to be fair.

Can we go out yet?

Why is Dieng 3rd choice at Boro when they signed him to be their 1st choice. Was has happened for him to fall behind the other two? They would be my questions, and without good answers, I’d be very wary of signing him.

Cooper is obviously the next cab off the rank. I’m not convinced he’s tall enough (and feel that 6’1” is somewhat generous, perhaps agent written). But you can’t argue with the rave reviews he has been getting for two seasons from two sets of fans in League One. You have to give him the chance, surely?

Is that definitely true? Dieng and Lumley both sold for fees I understand?

That aside, it’s the reputation damage it would do to us as a development team.

What's that noise?

It's the sound of McCarthy hitting nails on heads over in Cork!

I think we cocked up in not getting Walsh out on loan ahead of Cooper last season. By the time Cooper returns, he'll have had two years/40 or 50 proper games under his belt, leaving Walsh trailing in his slipstream.

Cooper seems to be doing well at t'Barnsley and if his development continues, you could see him starting for us between the sticks next season.

Erm yeah has Walsh had any significant loan spells? I can't remember any.

Admittedly only on wiki, but it suggests no.

10 games at Hampton, and 15 total in three other loans over three or so years. Coops in comparison, has had about 70 games on loan, prior to moving t'Barnsley for this season. He could easily rack up 100-plus games by the time he returns.

I agree. He should have had way more experience by now. He has hardly played even at development level. Not sure how you're supposed to improve without actually playing matches, especially as a goalie. Even going back before last season he didn't get a solid season in men's football.

Does feel as though the smart play at this point would be leave Nardi in place the rest of the season, send Walsh out on loan in January and let Walsh and Cooper battle it out next season.
