The manager started with the wrong team. Just because players are travelling back from international duty doesn't mean you drop them to the bench. Mbengue, Saito and Burrell should all have started and the Frey-Kone partnership just doesn't work. The result was a disjointed display. Lots of territory but little in the way of quality, clear-cut opportunities and shots. Couple that with poor defending and you're asking for trouble. By contrast, Millwall were sharp, clinical and well organised. It pains me to say it but on balance they were worthy of the win.
Chalk that one down to bad day at the office and summon the same spirit post-Coventry to start another unbeaten run. |  | | |

I don't think the team selection was wrong necessarily. Big physical side made sense against Millwall and it might well have worked if we hadn't gifted them tow piss poor goals. That's not the managers fault. Nardi and Cool made big mistakes that they shouldn't have. You can't gift Millwall a two goal lead though and expect anything from the game. They love to defend and they do it well.
Edit - just seen the second goal back. It wasn't cooks fault. Varane flicked it so it took it away from Cook. Not Varanes best afternoon by some distance. Poor passing and robbed of the ball a few times. Needs to find his rhythm again.
Edit 2 - assumed first goal was all Nardis fault from the reaction from cook and RND but cool slowed down when he should have just kept pace with the attacker. As mentioned, the ball landed on the 18 yard line. Nardi would have have to catch it on the floor or try and kick it away with a high risk of giving away a penalty. Second goal not cooks fault. Not overly surprised to lose as we are not brilliant in derby matches. It was noticeable how well Millwall defended seeing they recently lost 4-0 at home to Coventry but then again it shows how well Coventry have been playing. Millwall did beat West Brom 3-0 before the international break, a team we haven't beaten for some time so today's result is not entirely surprising. |  | | |

Play your best team at home, particularly against a tough side like Millwall. I hope Stephan is learning because he did the same against Oxford.
I've always liked Nardi but he's a liability with his reluctance to come off his line.
Frey should never start with Kone. God knows how he lasted as long as he did.
Varane needs to be told that he can play it forward.

Taking some positives, we looked fit and sharp throughout (a stark contrast to earlier in the season) and as mentioned above, dominated territory without that bit of guile to create more clear-cut chances. We were aggressive and in most areas, outbattled a Millwall team who scored two poorly defended Sunday League goals and that was it. It happens.
A Madsen/Morgan midfield of progressive passers could be interesting (depending on the game scenario).

Been out for the day and just seen the score. Looking at the stats on the BBC site particularly the touches in each other's boxes (46 to us, 7 to them) and the xG and xG from open play, it seems to have been a bit of a mugging. Am I right? |  |

I've seen some comments on Nardi. He made a fantastic save from Smallbone that was going in. I also think Cook trying to blame him for the first is wrong. That long ball landed right on the 18 yard line. No way Nardi could get there first. In fact RND and Cook lost Azeez too easily imo. Also Varane very unlucky to take it off Cooks head.

What makes me chuckle is that for the first goal there was just a few cm's away from us all saying what an amazing double save Nardi made... Instead he got the slightest fingertip to the 2nd touch and diverted it through Cook's legs.
I dont think he was at fault for the first goal thats for sure but clearly I am in the minority.
Not sure if its already been said but Varane was just shocking. He seems frightened to play forward ever.... MoM if we had some was Madson and Smyth with Kone trying with sadly on this occasion no end result |  | | |

I hope that's the end of the Kone-Frey experiment. It's not just that it doesn't work but we've also got other, better, more creative combinations, which after so long with fcuk all options makes it even more frustrating.
I'd say that as a dysfunctional focal point, a couple of mistakes, a goalie who cares but can't seem to patrol his own box were issues.
Most frustrating though was the lack of intensity during the middle 50 or so minutes of the game, I thought anyway. When a tackle or header was there they competed but no enough closing down, putting under pressure, fighting to get back to the pattern of the first 15 mins. Interestingly Sky didn’t think our first half penalty appeal was worth a review. Assault is acceptable apparently.
Julien is happy with our overall performance. I’m not, we lost mate. Especially disappointing for me were our deliveries in to the box, lack of second half intensity and our inability to defend long balls to their forwards on the move. We have struggled with this previously. Bould was at the game today.
No point picking out Julien or certain players, despite some bright moments overall it was a poor team performance. However first half penalty and Burrell’s chance at the end and we are good for a point.
Overall we are still in a great place so learn from this and move on. |  | | |

Well, shot ourselves in the foot today.
Nardi is costing us points, no hiding that he is not good enough. The first goal, well no idea what he was doing.
Really surprised Frey started and another that looks below the standard required.
We really needed a bit of craft up top today, rather than swinging crosses in that they gobbled up. I think the big miss was Chair.
Disappointing, as I though Millwall were no great shakes once we started playing through the lines on the deck. |

I found that defeat a bit mystifying and a tough one to take.
The stats do bear that out
Was very surprised to see Frey starting and thought Kolli might’ve got the shout
Kone is a far more effective player with pace around him and clearly him and Burrell have clicked. Not sure if anyone has mentioned Kones part in the first goal? Gave up possession very cheaply I felt.
Deserved a draw at the very least.
Most concerning for me was Morrisons injury and Sky seeming to do all they can to get retrospective punishment for Smyth and Mbengue

RND has zero quality. He can’t pass, cross or dribble. He has one attribute. To run quite quickly up and down the pitch. Unfortunately this often makes him our out ball. Which means the move breaks down endlessly.
Frey is just a hugely inferior version of Kone and irrelevant if Kone is on the pitch. In fact he just gets in the way.
And lastly, one day soon, all of you will realise Morrison is powder puff and bang average on every level. He’s just a stack of 5/10

My big thing on this today - the delivery into the box was just shockingly poor. I don’t think we had one ooh aah moment throughout the match.
Maybe turn it around and play a stronger team first half instead of reacting to conceding? I realise international breaks do strange things to managers and it can be very difficult to play from the off with a few players just out of Heathrow but I fancy us more having a first half go. We have a decent bench these days. |  |

Varane error for the 2nd. Just brain dead.

The penalty shout in the 2nd half for a foul on Saito - looked like the defender fouled Saito and then cleared the ball with his hand.
Even Sky showed it once a few minutes later to say it should have been a penalty although they conveniently didn't mention it again in their aftermatch review/Wall w@ntfest.
Thought Alex Neill gave a much fairer assessment of the game than Sky did - he admitted they didn't play well in the first 35 mins and even said they didn't deserve to be leading 2-0 at half time. | |

Harsh on RND as he has been much better than expected. However, he doesn't seem to have a cross in him, which is problematic, particularly if Dunne is the other full back. No point playing a lump like Frey up top if he's not getting decent crosses and is chasing hopeful through balls like today. We obviously looked much better with Burrell doing that. | | | |

Overall I do think Morrison is decent, but he was very poor today in the little he had to do imo. Apart from the bollock he dropped with Nardi for the opening goal, I thought Cook had a decent game.
When Mbengue came on he made a real difference and upped our levels |  |

Have you watched it back? What should Nardi have done? The ball didn't carry far enough for him to catch it so the only option he has is to try and play it with his feet but the Millwall player is right there on the ball so it's not just a simple clearance. Cook and RND thought the ball would carry and it didn't. They switched off and cook especially should have kept pace with the forward so he didn't have a clear shot on goal. It was a pretty basic defensive error. Cook I'm sure will be very disappointed with himself when he watches it back. | | | |

I think RND has been good for us and I actually think he had a good game again today. Obviously it's all about opinions.
But I am also excited about Esquerdinha and think he's going to be a very decent player. While I think it's a shrewd move to limit his playing time and not chuck him straight in, I'd like to see him get a lot more minutes than he is currently | |
