Another Prick in the Wall - kitty litter edition QPR vs Millwall match thread. 20:28 - Oct 15 with 29779 viewsSpaceman_P

After a well-rested International break.

I owe Colin one obviously for his great work against Bristol.

But Project ground control is needed here.

Qpr 3 Millwall 1

Kone, Smyth and Morrisons first QPR goal.

We tame the lions and hopefully their fans don't wreck w12.

My two pennies worth. Frey wasn’t great and him and Kone are too similar but they were not the main problem.

That was our delivery from set pieces and wide areas, caused in part by our wide players and them all being too narrow and inverted.

Vale had a stinker. But all of them crossed really badly. We had so many good positions and failed to create.

We must have put in 25 crosses. We had 46 touches inside their box. But we couldn’t find a hooper shirt.

The other big problem was Varane. He was very poor. Too slow, caught in possession. Backwards. Inaccurate passing. He’s not really played well at all this season. He’s had an easy ride. Should be stopped IMO.

Agree with all of this. Apart from losing (obvs) Vale was my biggest disappointment today as I’m really quite excited by him. Madsen I thought regressed at times to his old self; not aggressive enough but Varane… my word he was dreadful. I’d have hooked him at half time. I’ve never been a fan and really fail to see what people see in him. Give him time and space and he can look half decent but if he doesn’t get that he’s really not good enough.
Unlucky to lose, we were by far the better team and I’d imagine that JS recognises in hindsight that he played into Millwall’s hands by trying to match them physically instead of using pace to get behind them.

The inverted wingers need switching from time to time. Millwall were more than happy to get to the line and then check back. Floaty curled balls from the corner of the box were innocuous against such a big side. To me, Dembélé doesn’t want to play out wide anyway, just added to the clutter in the middle too often.

Agree Varane wasn’t great today, poor decision making, caught in possession in our own half & made lots of wayward passes. Would’ve changed him earlier & give him a break

Disappointing to lose to an ordinary (but organised)team...

Credit needs to be given to Morgan. When he came on he started doing all the things Varane should have done up to that point.

The grass is always greener.

Vale teams with Rumarm well. So that was off. Cook was where I saw the biggest weakness. Once he wore down their speed opened up opportunities. With Mbengue on that changed. Ultimately I think we saw Mbengue as a key man in the back, and Rumarms speed is also a big difference maker.

I agree Varane has been very poor. keeps getting caught in possession, passes backwards incessantly. Looks like he CBA TBH. Needs to get a detention really. Vale is inconsistent. Today was one of his terrible days. Would've hooked him at half time.

A couple of bad luck moments though - the diversion from Nardi that stopped Cook from clearing their first and the one from Varane that took the ball right in the path of Ivanovic. But most importantly we didn't take our chances.

Yes, was palpable especially in a couple of tv close ups. Kone was really frustrated a few times

Just back first 45 probably the best of the season and end up two down . Ridiculous!. I thought Frey was the wrong one to start pre game would have preferred Kolli if not Burrell but he was away too I guess but I thought Frey had a decent 40 minutes and linked well with Kone. Smyth was excellent for the first 40-45 as well. Final ball throughout the team was the problem. Really only Varane had poor game IMHO and been quite shocked by some of the reaction on shitter as they seem to have been. watching a different game to me.

Second half first 15 not great until Burrell and Saito came on and we were unfortunate not to get the 2nd.

Hate to lose and hate to lose in a Derby but was a genuinely entertained and you have to give credit to Millwall and their Basketball sized defence.

If anything this type of game was crying out for a Chair type of player with a bit of nouse and individual skill to break them down.

Norrington-Davies continues to impress and is a significant upgrade on Paal.

I think it was mentioned on the QPR podcast that VAR is coming in next year. Probably would have had 3 penalties or more with that at least 2 on Frey first half, I've not seen it yet but suspect Burrell's goal was offside. Ref overall was very very lenient

VAR next season? That's the end of me attending any games at all if that happens 🤦‍♂️

Couldn't make it today but watching it on TV, i thought the first 20-25 minutes was the best we've looked all season, just couldn't find the net. And then the sucker punch..

Varane is quickly turning into the new Sam Field, who has now disappeared thank God.
I'd put Vale in next to Madsen. I know some would say we would be overrun, but every time Varane wins the ball he gives it away or goes backwards.

You obviously watched a different Smyth to me. His habit of falling over every time there's any contact, which then gets rightly waved away by the ref is infuriating. He was lucky not to be done for elbowing their fullback, I thought Saito was a massive upgrade today.

I don't know how you can say this, he was so clearly our biggest threat today that they kicked him repeatedly until he hobbled off the field.

Disagree: he falls over a lot because he is fouled a lot. The ref gave the majority as free kicks yesterday did he not? It’s not a foul every time of course but he was clearly targeted yesterday.
And it didn’t look like an elbow to me, more of a shove. Their bloke was probably 6 & a half foot so not sure how Smyth could’ve reached his head anyhow.

His first shot was well saved, parried into space, but no one was there to follow up otherwise it would have been a tap in.

I thought he was a constant menace in the first 30mins and caused them a whole load of problems. He’s a logical replacement for Burrrell in terms of speed and he’s been scoring goals. His shooting has improved, as has his crossing. He also tracks back to support his LB/RB and works hard for the full 90mins.

He gets fouled a lot because he’s a threat. He also plays the game - something we have complained about no one doing, many many times previously. We are a better team and squad with him than without him.

I’d start him with Kone and Burrell in most games, rotating his left and right position within games more often.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Not really had chance to post since the game finished (except very quickly on Nardi last night) or read through this thread which I will do later today .

Surprised to see the Kone /Frey partnership tried again , especially at home .
It was said after the Oxford game that it wouldn’t be tried again and I’m sure people are saying it again . It really doesn’t work .
I can’t help feeling for Frey .
How soon people forget that without him last season we would have almost certainly have been relegated .
However , I didn’t think he could get slower as a moving able land mammal , but he actually does.
He and Kone just take up the same positions and are just way too similar and it doesn’t work .
I know Kone in that deeper role has worked recently but long term , he is the target man . The centre forward .
This may change with Chair coming back ?

I thought we lost the midfield after about 30 minutes and from then on , Millwall , without being the better team necessarily , were more comfortable.
Varane was very disappointing . Saw there was a thread about him and Madsen . Not read it yet but I understand the criticism . They were outnumbered I thought and out thought . But I didn’t Madsen was terrible . On the contrary, he is quickly becoming our most creative and involved player (low bar admittedly ).

2-0 at half time was very harsh on us .
We’ve played a lot worse than that this season and won.
So swings and roundabouts to a degree.
At 1-0 I said that he should leave the team as it was , but at 2-0 I was very surprised we didn’t see Saito and Burrell at the start of second half . Plan A of just lumping balls into the box for their enormous centre half of goalkeeper to gobble up just wasn’t working . The deliveries weren’t good enough , but maybe let’s get people running across the front of the gk , just once as that’s where every ball was aimed. It was strange .
For what it’s worth I didn’t think Saito played well at all and he’s looked slightly off the last couple of games. But he should have been on earlier in my opinion.
Overall I thought we played ok and there isn’t need for over the top reaction if there is any .
We will win some and lose some in this division and it’s really going to be down to fine margins in games. That’s where our coaching staff really have to earn their corn .

Agree Frey/Kone doesn't flatter either of them; think/hope due to travel hangovers. Frey hasn't really had a chance with Burrell, Saito, Smyth combo. It makes him look bad compared to Kone. Similarly when Field paired with Hayden rather than Madsen. Too similar and insufficiently forward thinking.

Varane was disappointing as he has been all season IMO. Annoying as he was my favourite player towards the end of last season.

I agree we needed different tactics. Would've liked changes at half time, probably Vale and Varane. Morgan made a difference. Good to see.

On the goals, I thought both were compound errors. For the first, at least two defenders switched off but I thought the ball was there for Nardi to claim or clear - it was well within the box when it dropped - he hesitated and that was that.

The second was even more farcical. I didn't think Nod had to put it out to begin with, but then Smyth was left 2 on 1 at an opposition throw-in which essentially gave them a free cross. That was inexplicable and shoudn't happen at any level of pro football.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Let me clear up the Burrell offside suggestion.
When Saito knocked the ball across Burrell was behind the ball. So, definitely onside. .

Another lesson to be learned by Julien.
Don't wrap your best players up in cotton wool, and sit them on the bench.
Always, always, play your strongest starting 11.
Burrell and Saito were on international duty, not building the great wall of fooking China.
