Development side . on 22:37 - Apr 30 by Logman | Yes, I think Esquardinha looks like he has got what it takes. I thought he was fine defensively. In fact, I thought he looked like he could easily have moved to centre back when one of the centre backs got cramp with 5 to go. He looked pretty comfortable all over the pitch to me. The other full back was good going forward also. |
Yes I agree. I thought he defended ok and read the game well with a number of interceptions. Going forward he looked good until the final ball. Gets the final ball right and he looks one for the future
Development side . on 22:48 - Apr 30 with 2690 views | nadera78 | I've watched them a few times now and, as Brian mentioned, this is a very well coached team. They know their jobs, they play to a pattern, they work well together. Furlong is doing a good job here.I thought Burnley were disciplined and well set up but actually quite limited. Also agree with other comments re Tuck, he's a lovely passer of the ball, always has time and sees the game well. A proper footballer. He needs to bulk up of course and get a L2 loan next season, but he's the one out of this team that I expect to go on and have the best career. Of the players we'd expect to stand out at this level - Morgan, Kolli, Bennie and Sutton - I'd say tonight was a mixed bag. Morgan played well, deeper than we're used to seeing him in the first team. Bennie looked good with the ball although I worry he lacks a yard of pace, and he definitely needs a loan next season. Sutton was a mixed bag, some glimpses of what he can do with the ball but also some sloppy bits of play. Even at this level he still looks very young and slight and is probably a couple of years away from being ready. Kolli was a bit of a worry though, you'd expect him to dominate at this level but he didn't. In fact, I thought he was shown up by Dillon who worked his backside off when he came on, had good hold up play and gave us a better focal point up front. Full backs both looked good, I think Putman is still quite young and Esquerdinha looked good going forward. CBs were good too. All that said, I wouldn't expect to see any of these bursting into the first team anytime soon. Perhaps the odd appearance here and there as fill ins but, in all honesty, they're all at least a year away. All in all, a very enjoyable night in White City.

So too Petrie but only when we were down to the barest of bare bones. I'm not sure either of them will be with the club next season.

He definitely looked like he will have the presence in all areas to play in the 1st team in the future but the quicker speed of everything in the 1st team looks like it could be a problem just for the moment.

I wondered if perhaps Kolli is nursing an injury. He went off at half time and didn't seem to be running totally flat out. I agree they're well coached. Everyone seemed to know their jobs and there was plenty of variety with through balls, playing round Burnley with quick passing and some lovely lofted balls down both wings for Sutton and Bennie to run onto. Nice antidote to this week's events.

Not as a regular, no. Like a few of the others, he could possibly fill in here and there but rushing youngsters never works out well.

It will be interesting to see how the club approach the left back situation in the summer with Paal on the way out. Presume the plan is to get a first choice in with Larkeche playing the back-up role but I wouldn't be surprised to see Esquerdinha start to get some minutes with the first team here and there. Always hard to tell in development games as there's a lot of players on both sides who'll end up playing at much lower levels then the Champ but on yesterday's showing our young Brazilian has the makings of a quality player given he has just turned 19. He looks to have good pace, a desire to maraud down the left, a variety of crosses (thought one or two deserved someone to be connecting with them myself) a good engine and decent enough positional sense. Did look to dally a bit on the ball which would result in trouble in the Champ. Paul Morrissey on the comms referred to him far more than others and they interviewed him after with a translator. Could be reading too much into that but seems a player we have plans for if we went all the way to the trouble of scouting him in Brazil and bringing him in as a prospect. Fair play to the lad upping sticks and moving to a country he doesn't speak the language oF at such a young age to play for the dev squad of a struggling second tier team. Could all amount to nothing but I will be watching with interest. Also agree with Alfie Tuck - the club should be looking to sort a League Two loan for him if at all possible. Lovely left foot on him - although very one footed. Seemed calm and in control at that level and picked a lot of lovely passes with good variety to them. Looked a slight cut above others on the day - perhaps not as natural an athlete as Kieran Morgan who played well in the midfield too.

Yes great football, a comfortable 2-0 win, shame not all home matches are like that Kudos to all our players who did well - agree that the full backs looked good especially getting forwards but I did wonder how they would fair defensively if they stepped up to the first team especially in terms of the physicality. On that theme Dillon looked very game in the second half and led the line well. Given all the injuries to our strikers this season, would it really have done any harm to give him a go? The triallist Alex Wilkie (although he has just signed for us!) looked very comfortable at CB - his family were sat in front of us so I complemented them on his performance and wished them all the best. If the final is away then I suppose let's hope it's Brentford and we can take a decent away following!

I don't think Kolli has fully recovered from the injury he had. And playing up top is not his role, Dillon showed how that was done when he came on.

Yes, Chef. Kolli's been used in the senior squad as a lone striker because of our injury crisis. But that's not where he's usually played in the DS. He's played on the left or ACM and that's where I think he plays best, even though I understand he sees himself as a striker.

Have to say agree with all . One thing Tuck has filled out a lot already and was a class act last night. Interesting which first teamers I saw supporting, Alfie, Madsen and Nardi, saw Xavi looking very calm afterwards giving selfies etc. [Post edited 1 May 9:52]

Kolli definitely has goals in him but he hasn't got the pace to play out wide at senior level and there are 10s with more creative link play. The more I see of him the more I think he needs to play up front alongside someone else. Which isn't really how we - or most teams these days - play. He might yet learn the skills required to play on his own. I'm curious to see how his next year or two play out. [Post edited 1 May 10:22]

Tuck is the player we are crying out for in that central midfield. Does the simple things well, not spectacular, but keeps the ball moving through the thirds in the right direction. Namely, towards the opposition goal. It finally looks like the conveyor belt of talent might be spluttering to life. Its taken nearly 8 years, which is about right, so we'll done Les, Ramsey etc over the years, and yes, even Nourry who cleared out a lot of deadwood in the summer. Credit where credit is due.

Nourry hate on this forum aside, how would he not be responsible for the sudden improvement of the academy? He's cleared out the deadwood implementing a focus on using 16-18 year olds in the under 21 team to help further development. The previous regime still had 25 year old Charlie Owens rocking up for the team week in, week out. I also believe a majority of that squad has been signed since he's arrived. I think this is one of the areas you can give him some flowers
