Australia were playing and their opposition required six runs off the last ball.
Trevor Chappell, younger brother of the more exalted Chappell's namely Ian and Greg, bowled the ball underarm, thus preventing a shot to clear the boundary ropes !!

Hilarious and outrageous at same time.
One decision that cost Australia a lot of kudos.

Was widely condemned afterwards.

The massive irony was that it was also 'only' six needed off the final ball just to tie the game not even to win it!
Australia's captain Greg Chappell later came out with some bullshit excuse about the amount of games players were having to play making them jaded and affecting their judgement. This didn't wash with the late, great Richie Benaud who called it "one of the worst things I have ever seen done on a cricket field"
Surely got to be the ghost goal - Reading v Watford - A classic Stuart Atwell moment.
But no idea what Surrey were thinking. Surely rack up the runs, tire the oppo then see what happens? Easier to get bonus points too. A day of blocking out to come. Fun. Is exposing a lack of quality spinner though with these teams all preparing roads.

Not just widely condemned, it led to a law change.

Would be called a no-ball now.
Even had Prime Minister at time chiming in. Remember being at Eden Park for next time we played them and at least one lawn bowl rolled onto field to greet them. Greg bloody Chappell got a 100 but thankfully we beat them

Richie Benaud - quite simply the finest sports broadcaster that ever lived. That epic line of "one of the worst things I have ever seen done on the cricket field" caused much more resonance to the whole sorry affair than all the other outrage.
I just wish he had been on the mic with the sandpaper incident. Can only imagine what he would have said. Something brilliant, no doubt.

Needs to improve his golf handicap...
Mark Wood did an interview with Athers and Nass recently where he pointed out he hates golf and all this stuff is a total myth, in my view perpetrated by bitter ex-players like Pietersen who can't accept that these days players get treated like grown-ups.
And I see Foakes makes a ton on an absolute road and all the fawners about his oh-so-pretty glovework are wondering why he isn't in the team. Because he didn't make enough runs for England when it mattered, that's why.
One day English cricket fans will get over this obsession with cultured-looking wicket keepers. Even in the women's team, Amy Jones can't buy a run whenever it matters but because she has soft hands she has to be in the team for 20 years.

He still makes enough runs I reckon, it's not like he's a total rabbit. And by being a specialist wicket keeper, he will take those more difficult chances which means when batting we don't need to score as many runs!
I still think in the last home Ashes series, we'd have won if Foakes had the gloves and not Bairstow.

Big shout that. I agree he makes runs. I think he's a good player. But the fact is, for the sake of one worldie every 3/4 tests we've got to go for the better bat, surely?
And we all know, even his biggest fans, that even the most aesthetic glovesmen / women miss chances. They all do.

The thing I would point out about the better keepers - when was the last time we won something choosing the best keeper?
World cup win - Buttler (very average keeper) T20 win - ditto 2010 ashes away - Prior (sure there were better glovemen around) 2005 ashes home - Jones (poor keeper, but better bat than Read and Foster)

Taking off Lothar Mattaus 1-0 up in a Champions league final.
"I was 38 then, and after 75 minutes I told the coach I was feeling tired. I’d been making different runs in midfield than when I’d played sweeper, where I didn’t have to run as much. I didn’t tell the coach that he had to take me off – only that I was tired and if he did want to substitute me, I would agree. I had a really good relationship with Ottmar and I think I had to tell him that. Then it was down to him. With 10 minutes left, he brought me off. Looking back, maybe it was a mistake – but if we’d won 1-0, it would have been correct. It always depends on the result."

Or taking off Sir Bobby against West Germany to save his legs for the semifinal.

Premier League Charlton Athletic in 2006, at the behest of their fans who were sick and tired of 6 years of always finishing between 10th and 14th, deciding Alan ‘Curbs’ Curbishley had done enough and the man to take them to the next level (Europe? a title bid?) was Iain Dowie.
