Roberts for Key IMO would strengthen us and we get £5M to invest elsewhere. I know his wages would be more but we would have cash flow for PSR.

Key offers a lot with his pace, his stupid mistakes and not getting the ball quick enough is down to style of play he had previously been asked to play. I think his defensive work has improved somewhat, as for Roberts we know his energy and movement is excellent but has been known to be targeted as a full back and if the setup is wrong would be an issue, relatively happy with Key in place but he should be looking to get the ball to Ronald first time and then with Key's pace can outstrip any player trying to chase back to cover leaving gaps and two on one instances to be exploited.

Key has been a totally different player under Sheehan, not as much playing in midfield and doing his job properly as a full back.

Phil's site reporting Boro are interested in Key and we value him at £ 5 million thoughts?

I'd be very tempted at that price.

Showed much promise in his first season but was pretty awful for most of last season although did improve towards the end.

Last year of his contract, it seems a bit high in my opinion. I would trust our recruitment team to get better with £5M. Connor Roberts on loan?

People go on about McBurnie but I’d honestly much rather Connor Roberts back. Would give us serious options in our style of play and his all energy style would suit Sheehan . With the remainder buy another LB and possibly a back up RB and we’d look strong

Innit.

The way we played under Williams wasn't designed to make any fullbacks or wingers look good. He was certainly more comfortable under Sheehan.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

If it's true we have had an enquiry and put a £5M price tag on Key, how much would you take for him. I would be very surprised if anyone matched our price, clubs don't. Around £4M i would accept especially with only one year left on his contract, although we have an option for another 12 months.

£4m would be a good price IMO.

Nah, key has alot of potential, if he stops his usual gaff now and again I think we can make some decent money for him.

I want to keep our best players to encourage other good players to want to stay here, know players may want to move on, but need it to be at the right time and price for us.

Key has proven a weak link in many games
A quality defender he is not
He could be deployed better in Midfield
4m would see us make good profit
We can do much better than him

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

All boils down to whether he's going to sign an extension or not. If he's not interested/or a deal can't be struck then 4m+ can't be turned down surely?

I agree. Sheehan, Montague, and new owners are trying to build a playoff-contending squad, which includes a fast-paced RB, alongside an even faster-paced right-winger in Ronald, & who also doesn't require a budget-bustng salary. Right now, Key fits that description to a T, & has worked with Ronald for 2 seasons now. I'm expecting better partnering from them this coming season. £4M would be a lateral-move at best, imo.

I suspect he changed his name to namaso because its his mother's maiden name.

Been looking at his stats and over the last 4 years at porto he hasn't ripped trees up but he definitely has pedigree as he has played alot of games for the english youth grades and changed allegiance to Cameroon, which he has played for the full international team.

Are Cameroon going to the World Cup, if so there would be an appearance payment due. Possibly both sides are factoring that into the fee.

We’d also have to consider whether we’d lose him for a month in the busiest part of the season for the AFCON

The Key Ronald partnership on the right should be ripping teams in the Championship apart, if Ronald has space it is imperative that Key gets the ball to him as quick as possible and support him, if teams are doubling up on Ronald then that means Key will have more space to explore and with good movement by Ronald the wing can be opened up to Key who is the faster of the two to overlap to good effect, if teams have to adjust to counter the attack on the right then there should be room on the left, the way Tymon has been getting forward and getting excellent cross in has caused problems BUT if the midfield doesn't function properly making themselves available to support the wide players, to track back to cover the wide forward runs while also able snuff out any fast breaks through the middle of the park, Franco and O'Brien had the withal to do it.
Hopefully the new players and the likes of Cotterill and Congreve can step up and impose themselves on that midfield.

I suspect after watching the last few months of last season the plan is to get the ball upfield asap so it is imperative that players make themselves available more often.
If we do carry on with the end of last seasons form I suspect that the wingers will get the ball quicker, more often so the other players will have to work harder to support them.

The problem will be that we dont have allen and especially o'brien so someone will have to step up, watching the game on Saturday it looked like franco was the man who wanted the ball alot, im hoping hes the man that will drive us on, melker and eom are 2 others who will also need to be the men to want the ball in the space between the oppositions midfield and defence.

Yes you need that skill on the ball and midfielders with good movement between the lines but while we press forward there has to be the discipline from players to know when to push forward and when to defend, the inability of the likes of Martin and Williams to acknowledge that opposition teams will be obliged to attack and push forward no matter how much control of a game you think you have by having possession in your own third, you need midfielders and a team as a whole able to repel the opposition's pressure while having controlled outlets to punish teams as they press forward. Balance in the midfield to be able to attack and defend.

One point about the thread that interests me is the reference to Ronald's pace, which a good full back could bring into play. I don't know if it is just me, but limited pace is one of the things about Ronald that has disappointed me. Most full backs seem to be able to catch up with him even when he has a yard or two on them.

He was poor in williams' reign but changed significantly after sheehan took over, just look at o'briens goal at home v Plymouth.

He does have an abundance of pace but not a great deal of nous, a winger with pace wants the ball early as richard has mentioned, it gives them the chance to have a go at the full back, no half decent championship full back will want ronald running at them, ons on one with no support.

Watch him this season, we will see him cause havoc.

Ronald doesn't have a great standing start pace but he has a bit of bulk that he can use to better effect once he has gained a head of steam, the only trouble is once the ball is moving at pace better ball control is needed. One plus points for Ronald he knows when to get in at the back post,he does pull his shots at times maybe the pressure to score has affected the front lines confidence. Under Sheehan was the fact he was the main aerial out ball from the goalie and was also willing to take players on if he had the ball early he could stand the defenders up and with Key's supporting pace could easily release Key down the wing, slow ball from Key means he is also starting from a inert position at times, the pair of them together should be turning defenders and getting in behind them but if the possession football in our third of the pitch continues then opposition's defenders get back into sometimes unassailable positions.
