In the light of the glorious Jimmy Dunne news and his supposedly poor taste in the coffee stakes, I thought I'd start a thread for us coffee vvankers. I buy all my coffee in bean form at The Algerian Coffee Stores on Old Compton St. The place oozes history and taste and has IMO the best coffee in the UK. particularly fond of the Organic Bolivian - high roast, strong as an ox. Two double shots in the morning - beans to cup. Difficult to beat.

Check out the book by James Hoffmann - The World Atlas of Coffee. It's a big book that you can keep on your coffee table and dip in and out of. It's a fascinating read and takes you through the history, the different types of beans, the conditions to grow and cultivate coffee etc...
Well worth 20 quid. His YouTube channel is good too!
Edit: it's on a special offer on Amazon at the moment for £17!

What if you don't have a coffee table? Will a tea tray do?

I've not tried the Algerian mob, will give them a go. Normally order though Monmouth, they're are a roastery that's very similar to what we were used to in Melbs. Being able look at and pick our beans by variety and colour (roast) used to be a big deal, standards a much lower now after a few years in London :) 1kg gets us through about 4 weeks of a few days at home plus weekends.

I was a member of the original Tassimo R&D team and had to learn all sorts of things about what goes into a cup of good coffee, I spent over 3 months with high speed speed cameras and endoscopes determining what makes a good créma, learning about roasting, moisture content and particle size distribution and all sorts of other skills to do with how to make a nice cup of Joe. I had a Tassimo at home but about 6 years ago I treated myself to a Breville bean to cup machine and the trade up in taste and flavour was noticeable. I had to return the machine twice as the pump seemed to be underpowered and would fail to pressurise the brew. I returned it for the 3rd time last week and upgraded to a Siemens fully automated coffee drinks machine. The improvement in quality was instantly obvious and the versatility just made the extra money justifiable. I use either Lavazzo D'Or or Red beans as they cope well with the range of drinks from Corsa to Grand XL.

I live in Italy the home of espresso, capuccino, moka, espressino, ice coffee, .... you name it. There are more coffee bars than people here but everyone has still got a nespresso machine at home, me too but I don't drink it (my family do). For me it tastes sickly. I drink a spoonful of the lidl equivalent of gold blend (fairtrade I'm sure) with boiling water in an espresso cup, sometimes with a drop of milk. What does that make me? .... Jimmy Dunne (I'm happy to have the same poor taste). https://www.lidl.com/
I love these sort of posts - I wouldn't have believed Nespresso's are so popular.
I bought a Bialetti Moka machine last year in Palermo and assumed I'd tapped the bubbling core of Italian culture.
Great country anyway, well played.

Very much a newbie into the coffee w@anker game as of the last few months, got given an Aeropress to play aorund with which has been a nice intro into it. Started buying ground coffee from a local roastery and then a grinder which has been a difference maker. Its ike a different drink to the instant stuff.
My filter coffee machine has just given up the ghost so this thread is timely. You've just inspired me to order an aeropress 👍

I'm a coffee *anker through and through, bean to cup, over the years tried it all settled on this. Expensive but well worth it especially if it means not paying £4 from a coffee shop.

Am happy to admit that I drink instant at home. If that makes me a pleb, then so be it.
My first thoughts on seeing this thread were one, it was definitely needed after Jimmy’s mention and two, this is all a bit Fulham.

If you just want something from the supermarket I highly recommend Lavazza Rossa.

Surprised to see a shout out for NZ’s finest Allpress - where did you find them? Have set standard for coffee vvankers in NZ and even picked them out in Melbourne laneways amongst all the other offerings so clearly ingrained. Allpress now pivoting into Olive Oil and set up in beautiful location on Waiheke Island - not sure if that’s made it to UK yet?

I'm very tempted to cut and paste your post to the 'Not a lot of people know this' thread.

Love my AeroPress. Simple to use, just put the off-the-boil water in quarter way up, stir, and top up after 20 seconds or so. Flip and press. Lovely cup. Use it every day at work. At home it’s the Bialetti every morning. Favourite is Grumpy Mule Colombian from Safeway (and I guess other stores). Love coffee fresh from the bean, but use pre-ground and always keep it in the freezer to keep the flavour fresh. Trick taught me in America.

Algerian coffee stores is a fantastic place for coffee beans. You can also buy a take away coffee at a fantastically reasonable price. Then off to De Hems. Yes Aeropress is a great Lo fi way of making coffee at home. As is the V60 dripper

10 am. Instant coffee from the flask in my shitty little van.
Can't beat it!
1.30am in The National, eight pints in and some gorgeous bird from Kensal Rise with a big future in front of her calling you a see you next Thursday and chucking her Bacardi and coke at you, then grabbing you by the peanuts and sticking her larynx upon yours may beat that.
Ah , memories.

Coffee is king. Whenever I have a cup of tea, I have an idea how I would like it to taste but it always lets me down.
You need to use loose leaf tea, the difference between that and the tea you get from bags is like night and day.
I read somewhere it's because that loose leaf tea uses the best stuff from the leaves of tea plants whilst tea bags often contain lower-quality tea 'dust' or fannings.

3rd wave coffee culture in London has been massively influenced by Antipodeans. One of the first and most famous 3rd coffee shops in London (Flat White, in Soho) was opened by two Kiwi’s.
I didn’t know Allpress is a NZ brand, but I’m not surprised. I’ve known about them for a long time, but only recently tried their coffee. One of my local cafe’s uses their beans and I had an amazing long blacks.
I’m a certified coffee vvanker.
