Madsen interview 17:00 - Jul 15 with 7587 viewsAndybrat

Refreshingly honest and not scripted, love the story about the Superstore. I know we go on about the money they earn and all that but he knew he was letting us and himself down. The value of confidence is priceless, hope he delivers. I remember my Watford mate saying he was the best passer on the pitch at their place. Good luck Nico!

Echo all that you’ve said Andy. Not sure I’ve ever seen an interview with a footballer like it before. Painfully honest and a window into the life of a professional sportsman when things aren’t going well, made worse by being new to a club in a new country.
I’ll admit I’ve never given up on Madsen despite the slating he’s taken on here for most of last season. He’s definitely got what it takes in terms of ability but he’s clearly a confidence player and someone troubled by self doubt.
I hope his injury doesn’t mean he’ll get overlooked early in the season due to a lack of minutes in ore season. If he gets going early and plays well I’m hoping we’ll see a very different Madsen to lots of last season. I’ll be willing him on.

ps. He seems like a lovely fella too.

He found it tough, just like many players did during the season, he is not a player that runs & runs, dashes here & there, he is a technical player and he is good. It took him time to get adjusted to Championship, English style football but he has enough technically to succeed & I think he could.....good luck to him, he comes across as a good man.

Seems a decent man, he may lack the orotundity of , say Christian Nourry but I wish him well.

Real honesty about his struggles with confidence.
I'm surprised in a way the club would run an interview like that - it's not your normal 'all's good here - looking forward to the next game' stuff clubs post.
But, I think it's a good thing - we all struggle at times and good on him and the club for putting it out there.
Saw him in some of those last games and he's got talent and vision. Really hope it works out this year.

Definitely a good technical player, but needs those runners around him. Fingers crossed for this season.

Poll: How is Nourry cooking so far ? 🤣

I want to like Madsen, as a player and, if not, as a man, but sweet Christ, does he need an injection of oomph! But then, when I look at somewhat comparable cultured/crafty players who've either not made it here or just done OK/blown a bit hot and cold, etc. etc. in the past, i.e. not setting the bar that high (Fillery, Osborne, Buzsaky, King, Brock, Langley - choose your own), I'm struggling to think of m/any I can remember I'd put below Madsen at this level for both creativity and industry. It's criminal to be a supposedly ballplaying midfielder and yet have so little influence (and balls) anywhere on the field. You can tell a lot from people's voices as to where their passion resides, or if they have it, and for me, listening to his interview, though I guess there's a bit of decent honesty in it, there's also a major cojones deficiency in the guy's acoustics. Even Andersen did better than him last season.

If he somehow steps up under Stephane and I have to mange mes mots, pour me a kir aperitif in wintry November and I'll gladly tuck in to my divisive lexis. But, to quote Roy Keane, your eyes don't lie to you. For me, it ain't happening.

Poll: What's your prediction for this season?

The thread is about the quality and honesty of the interview and the insights it provides. Not another chance to take a pop at the lad. Give it a rest.

Bah, we had that story about Francis in our end of season review and cut it for fear of embarrassing him. Another scoop lost

Lets use a foreign language and personal insults in a drawn out monologue. Then use words like 'divisive' which means to cause argument. The use of Lexis is just pure hubris. Cut it short next time and just put 'look at me moaning again'.

Well that puts to bed any doubts about whether or not he's a confidence player.

I suppose they all are to some extent but he was brutally and refreshingly honest about how it affected him last season.

He comes across as a quiet, very likeable fella I think. Really hope it works out this season, but part of that is going to rest on using him the right way - he's not going to be a box to box ball winner in this league. Ever.

How can you give up on a character like that? We know he has it in him and it sounds like everybody at the club desperately wants him to succeed. Great interview.

I genuinely would love every player that came to our club to be a huge success.

Whilst it was an interesting interview it does make you question if the club employs sports psychologists and how much time madsen has spent with them.

I'm still struggling to understand what is best position is. He's a six foot four giant who is actually a complete pussycat. That's really not a good combination for the championship!!

I live in hope but my expectations are incredibly low for him this season. He feels like one of the players who nourry has to make look like a success, Celar being the other.

Madsen played well when he first joined us and then when he got played those last 6 games of last season he was excellent. I really hope he can start this season as he finished that last one. If he does he'll create a lot of chances for us and get a few himself. Yes, Good luck Nico!

I am here for the Madsen redemption arc!

He struggled but I am not sure Marti fancied him or helped him along that much either.I think it was Boro at home where he was drifting out on the wing and just looked lost when maybe he needed some better coaching through.

Please.

He can't tackle, is hesitant when even attempting to do anything remotely close to tackling, cannot run, hid on occasions and somehow it was the MC's fault! He's a big money signing and was nowhere near good enough. Last few games of the season don't count for me as some form of redemption, as there was nothing riding on any of those games.

When the pressure was really on and we desperately needed results, it was the likes of Morgan and Kolli who stepped up and contributed significantly more to our cause than misfit Madsen.

I would much rather we moved him on and signed someone like John Swift on a free transfer instead, who has signed today for Pompey. Excellent capture by them in my view.

The problem you have with him and Dembele really is that they are hopeless without the ball, lovely on it and they do create chances, for Madsen if he has runners around him like at Sunderland he can be really effective but you need really good players behind him.

There were signs towards the end of the season that he could turn things around but we are going to have to build the team around him to get the best out of him

He can do it all but ... that only works in the Champ if you run run run.

He can tackle but only whens he's close enough to the play (which he often isn't as he does not keep running to keep up with it), he can do a defence splitting pass from the middle (which he infrequently does as he's often not in the right place at the right time as he did not run back or run forward enough so, he's oeftn 2 yards away from where he needs to be).

Played into feet he rarely gives the ball away and also shields it from the oppo who seem unable to tackle him easily, but that's not often as of course he's not in the correct position quick enough because he did not run run run.

A major flaw also is that he does not use his height which is criminal, we could really use another Dunnesk for corners as its too obvious to launch it Dunnaway all the time.

Hes in trouble this season, Poku could push Demeble into the middle behind Frey, which meanshes on the subs bench again. Not to mention Dale and Morgan can also play there.

zzzzzzzzzz

Refreshingly honest and brave interview

Appreciate the guys honesty and hope he can contribute in ways this season that he unfortunately could not deliver this season just gone.

He does have some nice touches and good vision also, and clearly is a player that would respond with an arm around the shoulder as opposed to a dressing down..

Perhaps Marti wasn't the man manager he needed and maybe Stephan will be more proactive.

You can see his qualities at times and he did improve and contribute more as the season went on.

Think he will be boosted by having his mate Jimmy as captain and I am hopeful without being expectant.

But yes decent interview and hope he does well this season ahead.
