Thought it deserved its own thread.

Rohl to leave today. Transfer embargo. Players not been paid and exodus. Council refuse to issue safety certificate for the north stand so no fans allowed this season. Chansiri refusing to sell for less than £100m.

Another victory for football administration

At least thats one relegation position sorted. Just need to beat 2 others now.

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

Shocking state of affairs. No doubt we'll still gift their youth team 6 points this season.

Feel really sorry for their fans - supposed to be looking forward to a new season but this will basically mean guaranteed relegation before they've even begun.

On the plus side it'll boost our chances of staying up.

I've no associations with Wednesday - either good or bad - but what is happening there is shocking. The basis of a really decent side with a great manager - all being thrown under the bus by an absolute clown of an owner...
This should not be allowed to happen in this day and age.

Morecambe about to cease to exist as well.

There really needs to be some sort of Operator of Last Resort system where the sport has a pot of money in reserve and is able to take the keys off wnkrs like this and run it as an administrator while facilitating a sale.

Can i add here that while our owner has come under criticism he has always stood by the club, has injected a lot of personal money and by all accounts is a decent man. So whilst not a football man he should get some acknowledgement for keeping us going after the Fernandes debacle .

I said this on the Gab Sutton podcast. He said he was surprised I rated our owner so highly. I said it’s all relative.

This might just be the tip of the iceberg, not quite sure what can be done, but some footballing authority somewhere will be looking at this and thinking oh dear, If only I knew what to do.

I'd rather we stayed up with points gained not at the expense of some football club going bust.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Imagine how mental the clubs would be run if they knew there was a safety net waiting.
We all know the government will step in once the quango running Thames Water decide they've had enough of pumping excrement into our river and putting up our water rates

I seem to remember that when we appealed our FFP fine, it was rejected because the ruling was that the EFL could make whatever conditions of membership it wanted, whether those rules would be deemed fair or reasonable in the commercial world.

In which case, couldn't the EFL couldn't simply make it a condition of membership that any debts incurred by a member club were simply converted to equity on an annual basis?.

It's about time we issue custodial sentances.

Solidarity to Sheff W and Morecombe fans.

Thames Water is anything but a quango. It's a private company.

I've always had a soft spot for the Owls, started in the early 70's when I spotted their support on the move, impressed by the decent numbers they brought to dodgy away games. I wish 'em well.

Unfortunately FFP rules don't allow for such an approach. They are designed to protect the status quo and not allow anyone outside the chosen few to buy their way to the top table.

This seems like a reasonably balanced explanation of how they've ended up in such a mess.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6465422/2025/07/02/sheffield-wednesday-dejphon-

"Chansiri does not operate a board of directors and is the only shareholder in the club he has owned for over a decade. According to documents filed at the UK’s Companies House, no other figure has held a position of authority at Wednesday since Katrien Meire stepped down as chief executive in February 2019 after a brief spell in the post. Chansiri has effectively sailed this ship alone."

That doesn't seem prudent to me, or something that should be allowed when running a football club.

The respective sports only stepped in to buy Montreal Expos, Chivas and Arizona Coyotes because they had the credible option of folding or relocating, which they did in all three cases. If the FA were to say "we will keep Morecambe alive and playing in Morecambe come hell or high water" and you're a prospective owner who wants a club for a fiver but would eventually have been flushed out by the threat of the club ceasing to exist, you no longer have to worry about that. You can watch the FA get more and more desperate for a sale until they're paying you to take it off them debt-free.

I have two good friends who are lifelong Wednesday supporters and I have been to matches at Hillsborough. They are deeply worried and for good reason.
But, despite the financial chaos, loss of the manager and important players and the painful uncertainty, some people are keeping that club going. They have been playing pre-season friendlies, for example. That dedication suggests a glimmer of hope - that there may be some sort of future when the current owner's mess has been cleaned up.
We should all wish them well.

Not only had Rohl departed - they had a £5m release clause and have ended up paying him to leave. That's even worse than how we/Nourry/Beans handled the Martí situation.

I've got a Wednesday mate who sent me a photo of their squad and coaches from the last day of the season with red crosses through everyone that's since left - there's barely anyone without a red cross over their face. Chansiri is driving the club into oblivion and won't get anything back for them, so is ultimately slashing his own nose off by trying to hold out for £100m. I mean what does a prospective buyer even get for that? No players, a transfer ban and they don't even own their own ground ffs

Shit but local

Agree that a safety net would be the worst thing that could happen. Imagine the spending sprees with no repercussions!

The best thing is to not allow owners like this to get their hands on clubs in the first place - prevention is better than cure.
Minimum rules should be that debt can't be lumped onto a club, club can't be used as collateral, legal obligation to keep it running, etc.

RIP Bury, Macclesfield, Darlington etc etc. disgraceful.

Poll: How is Nourry cooking so far ? 🤣

Is that really true? That’s crazy. Would no club have paid say £1m for Rohl? I’m amazed at that. Or did Wednesday keep sticking to the 5m.

The ground is owned by a company controlled by his wife so they've done very well in stripping that particular asset.
