Getting in very early on this one. I only started one match thread last season and we won 4-0 so here’s hoping my luck continues especially as it’s such a huge fixture. Not just because it’s the first game of the season or because it’s the first game for JS, not just because the pressure is on us to beat a team, at home, that many have tipped to be relegated but because this team needs to win for its fragile confidence. To get its supporters to forget about gardening leave and divided opinions. My anxiety levels are way higher than normal for this game and with the injuries we’ve accumulated so early in the season I don’t think they’re going to drop, especially if Dunne and Cook are unavailable.

You wait for months for the season to start and this is what you get; a knot in the pit of your stomach.

I’m going for a rollercoaster 3-2 win. Chair with the first.

C’mon you soooopahhooooopsah.

That goal was all to do with Dembele dancing through their penalty area causing panic. Watching his energy and willingness to get forward at every chance, I am going to stick my neck out and say that if we started with Burrell, we would be 3-4 up at half time. Celar doesn't fit into the team and it shows.

Burrell was a positive yesterday. He puts himself about. You don't have to be a particularly good player to do that, just make the effort and get stuck in a bit. I think that's where some of the frustration lies with Celar. You don't need to be any good to give defenders a hard time.

Not going to add much that hasn't already been said.
We were v good 1st half. Pinged it around sharply. Their goal really took the wind out of our sails, both in timing and the way it was conceded.

Lots of 6/10 performances. Morgan made a good fist of the RB role. CBs looked solid. Lack of any real threat in 2nd half. Subs made us disjointed, but Burrell looks a threat. Whether chaos county can be translated into goals is the question.

Felt a bit like a defeat immediately after the game but I think that’s because we were pretty decent in the first half and that Preston were about as bad as it gets really.
You could definitely see what the pattern of play is under Julien Stefan in that first period and the slight differences between now and Marti’s interpretation .
However, how that will work against a team with a press is anybody’s guess.
Don’t often disagree with Hunter but I thought Esquirdinha was lively, confident and fearless .
The last thing he looked to me was out of his depth .
Lots to learn of course but personally thought he showed much more than Larkeche has.
Morisson and Mbengue were impressive . Mbengue is clearly a lunatic .
Chair was best player on the pitch for an hour but faded dramatically , as did almost everybody which suggest we are on that ‘Ben Williams nonsense’ of being under cooked to start the season.
We just about survived it 2 years ago , whether we do this time or not only time will tell .

I understand the mix of emotions on here .
There were certainly positives from yesterday . Another main one being that players who hadn’t featured much or especially not in the positions they were asked to play , adapted and come in with little fuss.
We have added some pace and that’s long long overdue.
However, physicality is still a huge problem . Players down with cramp, looking exhausted after an hour , injuries occurring in the last 20 mins (Morgan was also nursing an injury ).
I know we are in for Saito but we need big horrible bastards to add this lot, not another 5 foot 6 winger or we’ll be bullied out of matches . With Poku injured it seems the Saito thing looks more likely .
Reading the posts on here about Celar , though has made me re think how I look at games and if I watch certain things more than others . Being an ex defender I probably do .
But I thought Celar did ok in the first half. Movement looked sharp to me and nice few play offs and link ups .
But is that enough ?
No. Probably not .
Same old criticism of him from me. We don’t create much , but there were 2 or 3 great balls across the 6 yard box yesterday that a Striker like an Austin would have just tapped in.
But Celar is never on the move and never anticipates or takes that gamble and that is never going to be coached now and that it a huge worry , because if he isn’t a ‘fox in the box’ then what exactly are you . I so want him to succeed but maybe that clouds my judgement of the things he does well . I don’t know anymore. Madsen maybe the same but it’s finding the correct role for Nico with the right people around him. There is a player in Madsen and I think Stephan sees that .

Ultimately if we keep dropping like flies like we are doing , we can all be as optimistic as we like . The squad won’t be strong enough to cope.

Excellent post, Mart. Plenty I agree with, and plenty to think about.

I don't think we will ever worry about Madsen getting cramp or a muscle injury through overworking his body. As said, there's a footballer in there somewhere, but his movement has no urgency and I find myself being over critical, if I just watch him for periods of the game. Just seems to coast through games, we are badly missing a rat.

Yeah, don't hate Celar like some people (particularly at the match ) but that sprint Burrell did straight after coming on was a real eye opener and contrasted with what we've seen from Celar from day one. He just seems ill suited to what we need.

If you’re going to play one up front then they have to be mobile. He isn’t.

As far as season openers go I thought we did okay.

First half was really good, looked very comfortable. Second half was a disappointment but the players were gutted after conceding their equaliser. Mentality still needs work.

Nobody had a bad game - which is good given Morgan was out of position, Walsh is inexperienced, and the Brazilian lad surprisingly started.

Centre backs both looked solid, Field had an off day but we know he’s key, all the wingers and Chair worked hard and had good moments.

Disappointed with the result as on balance we were the better team, but Preston don’t draw 20+ games a season because they’re a poor team - they know how to take advantage of the dark arts and we don’t

Holloway’s motto. McCreary was the ultimate nonstop harasser.

Strong and stable my arse.

Lots of good things. Think Dembele is going to be huge this season. He’s so strong despite his size. Expecting lots of goals and assists.

Morgan also looks like he could kick on. Big ticks for Mbengue and Poku too alongside Morrison.

But anyone that thinks Celar is anything but a wholesale dud needs their eyes examined. Yes he went through the motions of laying the ball off (in simple situs not under pressure) but his off the ball movement at the same level as Conor Washington. He simply will not anticipate and attack a ball into the box. He’s static and weak. He’s mentally weak.

He must be moved on. Take the hit, accept a loss, put it behind us.

I'm wondering whether Nourry played the major role in the signings of Madsen and Celar for lots of ££££ so, because of that, the manager/coach is under quite some pressure to play them both in the vein hope they come good and Nourry saves face. Just a thought. I can't see any other legitimate reason based on last season and yestersay (unless they get bombed out if we ever have a full squad available).

Other than that, onwards and upwards, starting at Plymouth on Tue.

Exactly.

Or it could be that Burrell hasn't had a pre-season and has to be brought in slowly, Kolli is just coming back after injury, Frey is injured, Varane is unavailable and Morgan was playing RB. Of course it could be down to saving face for the man in the spinny chair strokng his white cat. I just don't know really....

Can I just caveat one thing I said in a previous post ?

Been busy all day and posted really without reading anything else on here and without checking my original post .
But I said something along the lines of not seeing things about Celar’s game how perhaps I should . It read back like I was saying that I see things different to other fans . That was completely not what I meant . I was saying that I perhaps see things that he does well more , because I want him to succeed , rather than see the whole picture . Basically self criticising rather commenting on anybody else but it didn’t read well so apologies .
