Getting in very early on this one. I only started one match thread last season and we won 4-0 so here’s hoping my luck continues especially as it’s such a huge fixture. Not just because it’s the first game of the season or because it’s the first game for JS, not just because the pressure is on us to beat a team, at home, that many have tipped to be relegated but because this team needs to win for its fragile confidence. To get its supporters to forget about gardening leave and divided opinions. My anxiety levels are way higher than normal for this game and with the injuries we’ve accumulated so early in the season I don’t think they’re going to drop, especially if Dunne and Cook are unavailable.
You wait for months for the season to start and this is what you get; a knot in the pit of your stomach.
I’m going for a rollercoaster 3-2 win. Chair with the first.

As feared when they sacked Cifuentes, you need some pragmatism at this level and we gifted a goal and almost a couple more trying to play out every time from the back. Can’t afford another 3 month period while JS accepts you need to mix it up in this slopfest of a league.

That was a real mixed bag. Some very good individual performances (Morgan, Mbengue, Dembele, Poku, Chair) and, at times, some good team play. Too many passes going astray in the attacking third and against a better team that would have been a loss. |  |

Disappointing result given how well we played first half but their striker had one chance and put it away.
Everybody went into their shells in the second half, that goal really took the wind out of our sails, ending in a very Jekyll and Hyde performance. Out of those in the second half though I enjoyed Burrell rampaging about. Championship defenders won't be able to rest for a minute while he's about. How good he is in front of goal remains to be seen but I loved his aggression and pressing |  |

I thought it was a promising first half. We looked keen to press up and look forward.
But … amazing how our heads go down when we get a goal against us. Second half was poor and didn’t look like we would score.
Some promising cameos from players. Poku looked very good; Dembele worked hard and deserved to see the ball go in; Chair much better than last season.
I thought Mbengue looked strong and could pass a ball well.
A few youngsters didn’t do themselves any harm, Esquerdinha, Kolli and Adamson.
Shame about the result. Game just got worse as the minutes passed by. Ref didn’t help, some of his decisions were terrible.

The ref bought all their game mana&gement, but let's be honest...we were poor in that second half(didn't see the first half) If North End had a bit more belief...they would have won it. If Cifuentes agreed to the signing of Celar and Madsen...then I'm glad we sacked him. Not saying it's going to be any better under the he latest Messiah though. New season same failings. The injury list is already unacceptable. And before the usual big mouths tell me to go and support Chelski, it is only one game...and things will hopefully get better. Monsieur Jules will have learned a lot from that. Standard mid-lower Championship fare, not a huge amount of quality on show from either team. I thought Morgan did well as a stand-in right-back, Esquerdinha lots of energy and confidence going forward but got caught out a few times by Small first half. Mbengue all-action, Morrison solid. Madsen did ok first half, faded badly in the second. Chair was superb, my MoM, always tried to make things tick and got back to help out the midfield/defence when needed. Field, prefer him in a more defensive role, he got into a few good attacking situations then had a nose bleed. Dembélé excellent and Poku not far behind before a worrying looking injury. Celar anonymous again. Burrell may not be fit enough to start against Watford but it won't be long, I thought he did really well.
